Where is this young talent?
We are deluded when it comes to our list.
Clurey has what it makes for a long AFL career.
Ah Che, Hoon and Amon could make it.
The rest have shown very little or are too early in their careers to tell either way.

Players are said to be in their prime between 26-29. At a guess at least 2/3rds of our top 30 players on our list haven't reached that age yet.

Would be interested in seeing if Kenny would back himself to get the best out of Bennell given his time on the Gold Coast.

Yes he has well documented problems but with our strong Indigenous programs and culture, Harley could really flourish in our environment. We are absolutely craving speed and if Hinkley reckons he can work with Harley, he's worth pursuing

If we could get Bennell it would be absolutely amazing. Really the guy got punished for something he did years ago. I doubt GC would let him go.

If We can get Mayes on the cheap, say a second rounder, then get him. The kid can play and our current hff depth is questionable. Moves well, is a reliable kick, can take a grab, and is a local lad...why wouldn't we have a crack at luring him over?

Can we stop with the young list talk. Our list is Middle of the road age wise now.

True. Haven't done the stats but I think with a few changes* our list will rate fairly 'young' again after the D&T period. Whatever 'young' means, the shape and 'direction' of the list means more than an average. Clubs use 1-2 rookie spots on "break-glass-in-case-of-emergency" types so I'd compare the ages of clubs' "first 25" or so, ie include a few usually called on depth players or a few kids on the cusp of breaking into the 22 to get an idea of where we really are with this age thing. Crap, raw, maturing, peak or past it's peak are a few arbitrary categories I just made up. We're no Essendon or North, past any peak and in panic-ed and delusional top-up mode respectively, we're no Melbourne or Carlton whew but we're no Bullies or even St Kilda ATM either

My guess is our F22-F25 age is middle of the road relative to this year's ladder position, and most of our changes will be at the middle or top end of the age bracket (ages 25 and over during next season) so we're heading the right way. With a couple of exceptions our 25-29 year old senior players have underperformed or been missing/hampered by injury. That hasn't given the likes of Amon, Ah Chee, Clurey, Harvey, the Hoon safety to learn and shine like in the Hawthorn system or in Geelong of old. There is upside in our senior players and kids, some middle-agers may have hit a ceiling - thinking Mitchell, Moore, Krak and Jonas (contracted) and Young and O'Shea a bit younger but haven't progressed but overall it's not like we've missed the 'window' in terms of age profile. Big calls on Schulz** and Redden this year but barring two stunning trading coups (unlikely but for a younger KPF and/or younger or similar age ruck if they were to happen) I think both must get 1 more year each - not 2. And this won't be popular but IMO our offer to Krak should be: stay on the rookie list, fix the bloody fitness, we upgrade you before/during the season.

So hopefully next year we're heading well up the bloody ladder while not getting significantly 'older'. Whatever 'older' means

Did we really sign Broady and Lobbe till the end of 2019? How did they get signed for so long? I don't care about the perception of Kochie being soft but our football department is soft. Why did Tom Logan get another year? Why did Paul Stewart get two years? How are Broady and Lobbe on contract till 2019? They are fringe players in poor form playing soft football. Part of the problem is the role they are playing but...2019. wtf?? I'd be happy for them both to be dropped this week and we have guaranteed them another four years.

Sydney need picks for the bidding system. They also need cheap defenders, as they can only trade for under average salaried players and all their defenders are old. I'd be targeting Hewett and Bird big time. Hewett more so because he is much younger. I'd be looking to trade O'Shea to Sydney. He fits their needs more than ours.

Haven't looked closely but Sam never had big numbers before the draft but what when he gets the ball he makes the right decisions.

I reckon Lycett is regretting signing that contract at West Coast.

He'd be loving the contract as that is job security. A contract doesn't mean he can't be traded. We need another ruckman desperately - Lobbe is currently being gifted AFL games despite being unworthy. Not sure we have any cap space to lure anyone though - partly because Lobbe would be getting paid far more than he is worth.

Watching Lycett in the WAFL this year, it is very difficult to differentiate where the injury ends and the bad form starts.

He's moving about as nimbly as a road train but the Eagles are happy to keep playing him so it can't be that bad. Not sure what to make of it, but it would be one hell of a risk to throw up the equivalent to a late first rounder that West Coast would want in return. Whilst he's shown some promise, he's never emphatically looked like a leading ruckman. Sitting behind the marvels that were/are Cox and Naitanui doesn't exactly force you to break out and take the bull by the horns, but I suspect there's something missing with him.

Deep breath people.

Lobbe has struggled this year, no doubt, but he carried the ruck last year and was in impressive form. Yes he lacks around the ground work but I would back him to continue to develop and return to good form. He is also adapting to life with Ryder.

Broadbent is also still very young and will be hitting his peak over be next 2-3 years. He had a good season last year and earned he contract. His weaknesses have been shown up this year but he will continue to improve. He may never be an AA HBF but he will be reliable.

Stewart is reliable depth, although I agree two years was odd. Logan is there purely to help the youngsters in the Magpies develop, which is an important role, look at how GCS have struggled to develop juniors in the NEAFL without the support of senior players.

surely theres some real talent not getting a game at gws and gold coast that we can look at getting. thats what we should be targetting. gws in particular absolutely destroy the other afl reserves teams in the neafl.

what about the hoff, i hate to say it but im just suggesting it, he is a freak talent really but can we trust him to slot the big goal late in a big game to hit the lead or seal the game, hasnt been his strongest point over the years. can we be ruthless and get some real young talent out of gws or another similar club by moving the hoff on. i dont want it, i hate suggesting it but its an option.

We got soft with our list planning, put too much of an emphasise of keeping there players together and happy. We are absolutely stacked down back both Oshea and clurey are similar types and could have got something for them hopefully there value goes up but not sure. Also did we get a bit arrogant in our drafting the last few seasons drafting purely for needs rather than the best player available. We thought our list was set with only a few glaring holes now I am not so sure, did we overrate our lis. But football changes in a week and it will only take a week or two before everything all sun, shine and rainbows

I've come to a conclusion that we can't win a Premiership with our current playing list. I strongly believe that we have to make some really tough calls at seasons end if we are to go forward as a club, otherwise I fear we will become another Richmond and stagnate around the middle of the table for years to come.

We have recruited poorly for many years, and are now paying a heavy price for selecting players who are either poorly skilled, undersized, or lack a killer edge.

IMO we only have a handful of players who I view as untouchable in terms of potential trade bait, they are:

Wingard, Wines, Gray, Polec, Boak, Homsch, Ryder & Clurey.

Players who need to be delisted:

Cornes (retired), Butcher, S Gray, Logan, P. Stew, Russell, Mitchell.

Players on the fringe, potential rookies:

O'Shea, Moore, Monfries, Young

What are people's take on Schulz? At the start of the year I thought he was a Coleman chance and would be round about AA. With Ryder in I expected Schulz to be even better.

His effort has improved in the last few weeks but he looks slow and ineffective at times. The fact his goal kicking has been off radar is concerning but you would think that will come back with confidence.

Is this just a blip for Schulz or a sign that he is on the way out? Is he the forward who will help win us a flag? Does he have 2-3 years left in him as the media suggests he is asking for? Can he play the way he plays as a KPF with Ryder and Westhoff in the side?

*He remains our best KPF and I am a huge fan - really value his loyalty and service to the club.

I reckon his form is a reflection of how the whole team has been going this season including the poor delivery inside 50.
