Was involved at Claremont. Not sure exactly when he was there, but they won the WAFL flag in 2011-12 and were minor premiers by 4 games in 2013 before crashing out of the finals in straight sets.

They missed the finals last year when Pyke was at WCE and are struggling again this year.
According to Wikipedia, coached in 1999 & 2000. They finished 5th & 3rd.

Im calling it!!!
Mick Malthouse for 2 years with an understudy, would be a good bet

This business of a senior coach with a junior assistant who is seconded to take over after a defined period is fraught with danger.

Have we learned nothing from the Collingwood example?

Yep that was when he was senior coach, but between being an assistant with us in the mid-00s and with WCE now, he was an assistant at Claremont as well. But I can't find any specific dates on when he was there that time.

Pyke had a very commanding presence ....IIRC he was 2 i/c and in charge of the midfield

Players loved him ....and club was sad to see him go (for personal reasons)

Think it was always thought he could take the next step
Thanks WW. He sounds the best of the ??? next coaches on here. But I fell for Neeld based on info reported on BF :oops:o_O

How do we all feel about Mick throwing his hat in the ring?

About as excited as most people would feel about me throwing my hat in the ring to be a half forward flank. I'm available, but it ain't gonna happen.

Hard to think the Adelaide hierarchy would view Mick fondly after he tried to inflict collateral damage with his allegations over Betts signing as a free agent.

So he took the Carlton job to stick it up Eddie and
pies and now wants the crows job to stick it up Carlton and trigg ...... When the motives are negative the results soon become negative too

No thanks , but lets chat to him and get him on the selection panel

I think he was as assistant for 2 years and assume that it was in 2012-13.

That looks right, although not sure how involved he was, found this "Pyke is considered a highly intelligent football assessment specialist and has retained a connection with the game as a mentor and strategist at strong WAFL club Claremont for the past two seasons."

When Mick threw his hat in the ring I had the same first thought as most of the rest of the forum. Laughter, followed by an immediate shutting down of the idea.
HOWEVER. There are pros (and also the obvious cons).

Pros:
- He's an experienced coach, 3 time premiership coach
- Carlton list as we all know is awful and their improvement since Mick left isn't that marked to show me that the problem was 100% him
- Our list on the other hand is full of potential, we can go places with our current list. A heck of a lot more potential stars than list cloggers
- Unfortunately the reality is whoever coaches will be compared to Walshy, how will an inexperienced coach handle this in the Adelaide fishbowl? Mick is a known quantity at least.
- I'd love him to put Rucci in his place :)

Cons:
- Is he past it? Lots of indicators show that he is.
- How involved was he with bringing in the players he recruited to Carlton? Boekhorst with their first pick, Daisy, Liam Jones. Will he bring in guys like that to us if he was to coach us? It's a concern.
- the perception of being a divisive influence, losing players. Sando clearly lost the players, Craigy lost the players toward the end. We don't need or want that again.
- Age while not of massive relevance is a factor. Is he a career coach? I would say not, more a short term solution, whereas our goals are very much medium to long term.

While I'm not advocating the idea of bringing in Mick, I'm probably 65/35 in the favour of *not* signing him as our coach. But I don't reckon it's as black and white (see what I did there) as I first thought. He's certainly not the worst possible option we could go with.

Worsfold #1 choice for mine. Albeit unlikely.

Mick Malthouse's game plan over the years has been completely opposite to what we have been trying to achieve this season.

Hiring MM, will be taking a huge backwards step. New game plan, new favorite players. Not the direction we should be going in.

100% agree. His whole personality is the opposite of what we want too. We don't want a peanut that can't handle the media. Mick really went downhill and it wasn't just Carltons performances.
