Are you Bolton's mum? If people are only allow opinions about players and coaches because they "know" them, then we might as well shut BF down. Ease up mate.
No, read what i said. It's got nothing to do with them knowing him or not..

Posters saying he's going to fail because he's not a campaigner or not Alpha enough. What does that even mean? It's pure dribble.

Such a chipper little fella

Hard to see that lasting

Carlton will suck the life out of him. Expect him to look like this after a couple of years.

No it's not, check any macho dominated sport and you'll understand.

I enjoy malthouse's special comments, especially before he became coach of Carlton. He doesn't hold back and calls a spade a spade. Too much holding back in the commentary these days. If someone ducks his head or doesn't go as hard as he should, absolutely call him out on it.

I think it'd also help those people who don't watch a lot of footy- they might be viewing such acts as a normal part of play.

Talk about tall poppy syndrome. A bloke gets to fufill one of his dreams to be be an AFL coach and you all want to bag him out before he's even started. You all sound like a bunch of jealous schoolgirls, having a few giggles behind his back.

And what coaching experience is this amazing insight based on?

Not Alpha enough!! What bullshit. Does Ross come across as an Alpha male? That way of thinking is thankfully a thing of the past. Respect is earnt though actions. Not by puffing your chest and trying to scare people into listening to you.

Would any of you be "Alpha" enough to say these things to Bolton's face?

And yes "Tall" poppy, hilarious.
Alpha simply means to be the head person of a group/pack. To be a leader of people that people follow. And no I dont see it in Bolton. I know it's unfair and I'm making generalizations on small snippets of information, but that's my opinion.

That being said Carlton did try Malthouse and Melbourne tried Roos who I'd call 'alphas' ' top dawgs' in the football community; and they failed. So... I could be wrong... but I doubt it, I dont buy this 'he's a teacher so he sells the message well' bullshit.

Why don't you buy it. Simpson for the Eagles seems to be selling his message pretty well

Yeah, remember last year when he was criticised for not showing enough emotion in the coaches box? Admittedly that criticism came from complete pillocks but still.

I think Bolton will go fine, provided Carlton back him with the time and resources to turn the ship around.

I base this on two things:
  1. His experience at Hawthorn - he surely knows a lot about football and about coaching; and,
  2. The process Carlton used to appoint him - they actually pulled together a coaching panel that included non-AFL old boys and went through a thorough process - they didn't just try and find the biggest 'name' they could.
Talk about him being too meek or not alpha enough is a little bit silly imho. Coaching, like anything, takes all types.

Given their track record over recent years you have put your finger on the most crucial part of the equation for BB to make a go of it.

Expecting such an ego driven club with rival power groups vying for control/influence within the organisation to go all "peace and goodwill" overnight is hard to imagine if things don't improve quickly.

Pagan, Ratten and Malthouse have all tried and failed to turn it around in recent years, probably the toughest coaching job in the AFL given the expectations on the club from within. Good luck BB.

I did put my finger on it, hence my qualifier. You'd think they'd have learnt some lessons from the last decade or so - but you're right, they probably need some 'quick wins', in the sense of heading in the right direction. Time will tell.

I hadn't read the back page of the paper before my first post about signing him on an ongoing, rather than fixed term, contract. I'm less confident now than when I posted my first post. It could put pressure on to get results more quickly, rather BB knowing he's got three/four years to demonstrate improvement.

lol at Floggard defending 'Hodgey' on 360.
It's such a boys club, with everyone defending everyone. It takes more balls to actually critique actions on the field rather than defending them all the time. Hodge deserves no defense; he's a dick on the field and the general public knows it.

I think Malthouse was the old school Alpha coach and it worked horribly at Carlton. Rat's on the other hand was another "nice" guy and seemed to go alright.

I recon they might be ok with him, with some luck get to North / Richmond level in 3 years time.

always a concern when players and coach talk pre game about getting together on Sunday to cheer the eagles on sunday
