Yes it's a possibility he could change his mind and yes, it's against the rules to have a binding contract already. Verbal agreements are pretty common place in the AFL I'd think. I mean, a trade needs to be done before a player can sign a new contract but that doesn't mean a contract hasn't been prepared and sitting with a players manager waiting for sign off, once the trade is done.
