Pick 5 + Dempsey for Bennell and our third wouldn't be too bad. I rate Dempsey and we wouldn't use our third rounder anyway. Definitely not that bad an offer given the circumstances.

Only issue would be Dempsey's remaining 3 week ban which rolls over into 2016.

Watched footy classified for the first time in years tonight - is this the worst footy show on TV? Hutchy and Caro have great faces for radio.

I'm torn - if we are getting trade r***d as suggested above I would like to think that the relationship between Harley and us is not absolutely irreparable (he loves us, we can't afford to lose him for absolutely nothing). I know we need to make a stand for the culture of the club but cutting off our nose to spite our face is pretty drastic. He's no Ben Cousins or Lawrence Angwin, he's just a immature pest.

Any chance we string him out during the trade season and then go to him on the last day and come up with with terms to take him back (e.g. Stevie J treatment - train away from the group during pre-season, suspend him for 12 games, assign him a minder, move him in with Tommy Lynch - basically manage his life for him until he is ready to do it himself).

A very romantic notion I know but one a strong club like Geelong (see Stevie J, Gary Ablett Snr) would consider before doing this.

I've honestly always felt the same way about Gaz here. I love the bloke but I can't help but wonder what goes through his mind sometimes.

Hes coming to West Coast .I work with his brother. And its known 2months ago gold coast wanted to trade him..And he has nominated to rove to Nic Nat. We have 2 first rounders, one of them being a scott selwood compo. We are getting Jetta for Mitch Brown. and Redden for player and 2nd round.

Um West coast don't have the best history with that type of player though, do they? That's a worry in my opinion. Might be best at Freo if he goes West or leave the game altogether for a couple of years. He obviously can't cope with the responsibility of being an AFL player just yet no matter how talented.

Weve actually got a strong indigenous culture at West Coast...And guys like his cousin Bennell, Newman, Wellingham, incoming Jetta and the Flying Fijian will all get round him and help him..Newman has turned the corner. Also not to mention former indigenous players for the club.

That's because clubs don't normally make a tough stance with their quality. I remember Swan guilty of assault, Marley Williams guilty of assault and not being moved on. We'll get market value.

I wasn't trolling at all dude so didn't have to bite like that. Swan cleaned his shit up and won a brownlow and Marley should be close to AA this year. But point taken.

Probably because he and his family are so heavily linked with the Cats and the city of Geelong. You can probably thank the Broadbeach Cats for convincing the Abletts that the Gold Coast was an ideal location to live. That fateful day in late 2008 when Broady signed a 23 year old Nathan Ablett:

Just 12 months later you have Nathan signing for the GC17 VFL team and Gaz Jr flying up to meet Travis Auld in his Broadbeach apartment. A year after that Gaz signed a 5-year contract with the Suns and Nathan was officially drafted to the club. Despite the fact that the team was woeful for most of 2011, I'm sure Gary really enjoyed playing and training with his brother again. Even though Nathan was delisted after their first season, I know he has remained on the GC and I think he may even live with Gaz these days. They've made plenty of connections through the church scene on the Gold Coast and on the whole I think they are happy with their lifestyle.

The Abletts are quiet personalities by nature and the Gold Coast offered something most footy cities in Australia can't - anonymity. When Nathan was assessing which QAFL club he would play for back in 2009 he actually said he toured the facilities at the Southport Sharks and thought it was too good! He wanted to keep it low key and went with the considerably worse facilities offered at Broadbeach. Neither Ablett enjoyed being under the microscope and Geelong is possibly worse than Melbourne because it really is so small and you can't do anything without word getting around. The city lives and breathes one team.

The Gold Coast is so different and I think that's appealing to their personalities. Does he feel like he belongs here? Probably not. Deep down he'll always be a Geelong person but for the time being it's convenient to live and play on the Gold Coast with his brother. When Gary retires I fully expect both of them to move back to Victoria.
