A lack of cartilage can mean pain while running as the cartilage prevents bone on bone rubbing in the joint or he could just break down early in his career and this is why I'm thinking clubs will be every hesitant to use a top 20 pick on him, plus he didn't really play at all this year I'd be holding off picking Burton ahead of others but it's only my opinion

A high percentage of afl/soccer players have repaired or removed cartilage. Quite common to have a clean out just as precautionary or prevention for future knee issues. I had some removed in my left knee at 15 never had an issue since and played within 4 weeks Then repaired on my right knee. This took 2-3 months to heal. Still gets sore if a bend down for a long time. I also snapped my ankle playing my sport. This was all by the age of 19.
Was playing at the highest level in my sport.
I still blame nite clubs and women more than my injuries as my reasons for not making it.

Burton is star worthy pick 11 or 19 depending on Oliver/Francis.

Be more worried about crows feasting again in due course than anything else.

Does anybody think SOS might regret trading pick 20+21 for pick 11?

My opinion is he did this thinking surely GWS would accept 11 for Tomlinson, as we all know they didn't. But afterwards looking at it, I don't see the level of talent between 11-21 being to different unless he has someone in mind or a potential slider.

Names who could be available at 20+21;
Dunkley, Cunningham, hibberd, Clarke, B. McKay, Collins, Tucker, Rioli

Getting 2 of these players instead of 1 (Burton, Matheison, Gresham, Balic, Bonner) would add further talent to our list. And are these players much better than the ones who would be available at 20+21?

Ooh could you imagine.

1. Weitering (Car)
2. Schache (Bris)
3. Weideman (Mel)
4. Burton (Ess)
5. Parish (Ess)
6. Milera (GC)
7. Francis/Curnow/H.Mckay (Mel)
8. Francis/Curnow (Car)
9. ??? (Ade)
10. Oliver (Car)

Ooooh that would be nice.
I would have kittens with laser beam sunglasses if that happened.

That will now depend on what we take at #8.

I felt it was a bit of a risk at the time but let's judge it on its merits after draft night...............actually...........well after draft night.

Perfect for a rebuilding team then. Huge upside and continuing growth for both. H at 8/11, B at 19.

Who were the last really good brothers to play together? Jimmy and Phil? We could make huge news.

That would be meniscus, which as you say is quite common. Damage to the articulate cartilage of the tibia is different and is not reversible, though stem cell treatment is supposedly improving.

I would have thought SOS would have discussed the deal with GWS before getting 11, so I don't buy the reports we had a last minute go at Tomlinson. SOS and Gumby have a good relationship so surely Sos would have told him in advance he was tryin to get 11.

Don't believe all you read.

This weeks requests

1. Weitering hope to see him in the forward line in a couple of games next season

8. Francis hope to see him in the backline next season

11. Oliver something tells me he won't slide that far tho #wisfulthinking

19. Gresham if available if not Collins or B Mckay

Can't the draft hurry up and start already

I think the club had a very definite view of when the top-end talent in the draft dries up, SoS was talking about getting picks in the "top 13" which is a rather specific number.

I'd say the move was the club was having $5 each way - we either lure Tomlinson, or we get another player in what we considered the top bracket. I don't mind it at all, especially given our history with later picks.

Both Milera and Burton are Top 10 talents.

Perhaps taking them together means they'll be less likely to leave?

Put simply, the earlier the pick the greater the access and choice you have to top end talent.

There's going to be at least a couple of gun players slip through which SOS will be hoping to capitalise on.

My opinion is he did this thinking surely GWS would accept 11 for Tomlinson, as we all know they didn't.

It was reported that Carlton had brought in some big guns to set up for a big announcement on the last day of trading. Pick 11 was integral but evidently it fell through.

If we go with a high risk pick like Burton at pick 11, who struggles to have an impact in his first 2 seasons because of the leg injury and then asks to be traded home uncontracted in 2 years time then one would question the wisdom. (There was a 'superstar' named Rory Hilton once.)

WB will be very happy with the additional pick, since they now have 3 picks inside the top 30, when previously they had 2 inside the top 50.

I thought that the 1 higher pick fitted into our list management strategy better than 2 later ones. Could have we picked 6 kids in the ND without delisting another player (keep in mind our plans for the PSD/DFA would not have been finalized at the time of the trade .....)

GWS were set to trade us Tomlinson for Pick #11 which was why the CFC media were on deck and ready.

... That is until Colin Young (Cam McCarthy's manager) kicked up a stink and accused GWS of playing favourites with SOS by questioning them as to how they were willing to let one contracted forward walk, while another with the exact same years remaining under contract was being forced to stay.

GWS agreed that it looked bad and set terrible precedent going forward, so they too forced Tomlinson to remain.

Good post. Essentially Armfield + higher rated pick 11 VS. picks 20 and 21.

I feel SOS could sell the pick 11 better than the two second round picks.
