Richard "controversially picked before buddy Franklin" Tambling ahead of
Nick "controversially picked before Justin Westhoff" Gill then
Lucas "controversially picked at all" Herbert.

Herbert carved out a great niche for himself in the "amateur" leagues, getting buckets of money from various clubs, as did Matthew Golding, mostly for Noarlunga. Both earning significantly more money than they would have in the SANFL.

I'm interested to know who has worn the #1 (and other numbers), but not played a game. Did we give it to someone, but they weren't good enough? That sort of thing.

Tambling was garbage overall. Had some good games, but his worst was truly terrible. It also says a lot that the first of those good games came ~2.75 seasons into a 3 season stint.

That said, I feel sorry for him that he was the first victim of the now proud Crows coaching tradition of keeping a bad player in the side long after they've hit rock bottom and then dropping them after a (relatively) good match to make the coach look like they are making the tough calls.
Actually Richard was the opposite. Started his career here like a house on fire, got suspended and Craigy pretty well banished him for being 'unsociable'. Won a BnF at the Double Blues but never really got much of a look in under Sando, or if he did he was much like Lyons and was either sub or got subbed.

Think we could have used him better and could've had a future. Ah well nevermind, he finished his AFL career with a lovely goal on the run.

As for the best #1, Pods for mine...... but it's not a great group.

Sums it up really if Pods was the best #1 we've had at the club considering he only played like 20 games for the club. Doesn't say much else about the other blokes who have donned the number
You missed Anderson ;)

Agree with those suggesting Anderson was the best, with JPod a long way behind him (but an equally large distance ahead of the other contenders).
Vader - do I create a new thread for each number (over the course of a few months) or have one thread. Don't want to unnecesarily clog up the forum.

He was good for a year and a half. Cooked by the end. Awesome state of origin player while he was at Essendon.

New thread. C'mon let's get started on #2. Evan Hewitt can't wait!

My suggestion would be to stick with just the one thread. But I'm not a moderator around here any more, so don't feel bound by my suggestions.

Crowell was seriously fast, and a real tryer. Favourite for me.

There was a story that Crowell once lined up on Stephen Milne, who said "who the f... are you?"
Crowell said "You'll find out" but I don't think Milne ever did.

It is the....meh part of the footy calendar. So a bit of fun. The following are Crows players who have donned the #1 playing for the Crows.

Romano Negri, Greg Anderson, Lucas Herbert, Andrew Crowell, Nick Gill, Richard Tambling, James Podsiadly

Who was your fave #1 and why? For me it was Greg Anderson. He was playing around the time I seriously got into the Crows.....and was a Port Magpie

Liked his style and represents the early 90's with that long hair.
Im so glad you weren't like most Port Magpie fans who barracked for the Crows before 97. Im glad you stuck by the crows and didn't jump ship to follow the new franchise Port Power.

I was massive fan in 93 of Greg Anderson, I was a 10 year old back then and was glad he had left the bombers to come play for the crows. Used to love seeing him on the wing and with his booming kick hit Modra on the chest. My old man nick named Anderson "the draught horse" in his later years as he became very slow.
What does my head in is that when the Slowdown happens Greg Anderson plays for the power legends.. makes no sense at all.

New thread surely. If they're all in here it'll be a dog's breakfast once we're a few numbers in and people still want to talk about earlier numbers.

From time spent in our gurnsey, Anderson with Jpod a far distant second.

Tambling could have been great if he was managed better.

I will give it a few days in between regardless. Keep the forum cleanish....

Greg Anderson without a legitimate challenge from anyone..

though, I remember when we signed him I thought it was the signal for the avalanche of players to return to Adelaide - Thought Kernahan, Bradley, Jarman, Francis etc would all quickly switch to the Crows too...

Obviously Jarman did 3 years later... but still.. the rest never happened :(

"house on fire" is stretching it. I remember thinking he was an OK recruit to begin with.

My memory of Tambling's Adelaide career is as follows:
1) He starts off respectably.
~1.5) Somewhere in this stint he takes a mark, which is acknowledged by the umpire, and plays on. Said umpire changes his mind calling it a free kick against Adelaide and 50m against Tambling for kicking the ball away. A goal is conceded as a result
2) He has a terrible game against Carlton.
3) He returns to reasonable form, but is made a scapegoat after Collingwood kick 10 goals in the last 15 minutes of a game.
4) Disappears into the wilderness for 2 years
5) Plays a crucial role in a come from behind win against Geelong.
6) Kicks a goal
7) The end

You're right, the Geelong game was more like 2.65 seasons in.

Your opinion but I disagree. If we are going by Wright, VB or DMac standards he was royally screwed.
