Richard Champion was desperate to play for us, but we had a limited number of spots for players drafted to other clubs. When Darren Jarman reneged on the deal, it was already too late for Champion as he had agreed to go to Brisbane. He was next on our list, and we would have had him but there were no more spots.

Jarman backed out and a spot opened up; only after we had said no champion and he signed up elsewhere

Macintosh was too slow.

Kernaghan was like pavlich always threatening to come home...

Mid 1991 I remember hearing about a possibility Craig Bradley wanted to come home but that never eventuated.

Kernahan we wanted but was never going to happen. That is where the "play the crows to increase your current contract card" started.
And ever since carlton got caught paying them under the table, carlton has been shit and should be relegated.

Some of the Crows selections were very questionable. Trevor Clisby, Alan Bartlett , Bruce Lindsay (the bloke looked like he was 50)
I was only a young kid back in 91 (8 years old) so its tough to remember what other decent sanfl players were left in the sanfl comp.
Most of the champion SA players at the time were pushing 30 so their best years were behind them.
It was a real shame that McIntosh didn't sign with us.

One of the stories was that Bradley was a little offended that the Crows always saw Sticks as the #1 target and got all the attention, despite never really wanting to come home, when it was Bradley who was the one who could have been convinced if not made to feel like the 2nd banana.

It certainly was the tone, there was this romantic notion that Sticks was going to come home and play a SoO blinder every game and win the Crows a flag.

Certain people and the media would talk it up as a possibility but old Harry called BS on it every time. He was never leaving Carlton.

We had a real crack at Doug Hawkins in 92 from memory. And were close.

Doug Hawkins wanted to join us but Neil kerley wasn't so keen.. he flew over at the end of 1990 to meet with us. Kerley and cornsey told the story on 5AA one evening.

Does anyone know the story about Bone being given the Crows credit card on a trip to Melbourne to try and entice sticks over.

I'm sure I've heard Cornesy tell it and the idea was Bone and another (McGuiness?) were to pay for drinks all night and get a deal over the line.

The night apparently ended with the Crows boys passed out and Sticks continuing to get blind all on the Crows tab.
Sticks was close at the end of 1990. watching open mike sticks had said he had a very average 1990 season and the team had a bad year. "I was close but it probably was never going to happen"

Geez if we had signed Sticks and Platten and Jarman that year we would have been contenders in our first year.
but looking at those 3 i don't think we could have afforded those 3 at one time.

Bruce Lindsay was a great player but I agree that they rewarded some of the older players for loyalty when they should have been getting a lot more youngsgers. SOme of the youngsters we did get were some of our best ever players, Rehn, Smart, Hart and Ricciutio etc.

Yeah Bruce Lindsay was a great player and from memory captained the State side in 1990 ??
Bartlett I think was a Cornes favourite
Clisby was probably past it by the time the crows came around but did play a few premierships at CHB for the roosters.

Wanganeen I'm led to believe was considering a move back and we were doing all we could knowing it would be almost impossible to deal with Essendon and in particular Sheedy who had a lot of input back in those days. Wanganeen then went and won the Brownlow and AFC totally backed off knowing that it would never have the trade currency to get him across.

Mark Naley I think was also thought about but was considered to old and injury prone and was starting a building business, plus we had McGuiness, McDermott and plenty of other smalls. Naley then goes and wins the Magarey in a canter in 91 and play SoO being the only player not with an AFL club.

The off season he joined the swans he was widely expected to join us.
there you go. I don't remember that at all

would have been 1994 off season?

Andrew Johns from Sturt declined to join. Crows really wanted him.
Regularly racked up 30-40 touches a week and was a goal kicker.

And he has been dirty on the club ever since.

Can anyone remember his articles in the paper?

Try 1995 when he went to Fitzroy and we then polity said no thanks.

Neil Kerley only spent 1 year with the crows as football manager and that was 1991.
