After the siren: Wines leaves Port stranded on third base

IT WAS shaping as the best Christmas ever for Port Adelaide, with Travis Boak, Robbie Gray and Chad Wingard each committing to new deals with the club on the very eve of the festive season.

They swung for the fences, the Power, in terms of their contract extensions, but in the end they didn't quite get there, with Ollie Wines putting off his negotiations to next year.

So now they're stuck at third base and that feeling of dread engulfs the Power, the same as that experienced by Geelong in 2011, Hawthorn in 2013 and Adelaide last season as a big name player seems poised to walk out the door.

As print media is continuing to decline you would think from a business perspective alone that by having a balanced view on port/crows matters in the Advertiser they would benefit.

As we are the biggest club in this state it would surely be in the advertisers best interest to not publish drivel about port almost daily and provide articles that might actually engage new/old readers to buy their paper but nope.

Do any other clubs have big names coming out of contract at the end of next year? I guess after Ollie is sorted they will move on to AhChee leaving to joint his brother at GCS lol

Just when you think the SA media has hit rock bottom, you soon discover they're on a campaign to find new depths of gutter journalism.

I understand that the sanfl invented the crows, but who in graham cornes's eyes invented Port Power?

Dude's either being disingenuous (doubt it, usually a straight-shooter) or believes the fallacy. Has previously written that we "didn't want to be known as Port Adelaide" which is just horseshit.

Refer to the montage:

image.jpeg

All images from 1996-1999 before the Port Power branding was scrapped.

An awful lot of "PA/Port Adelaide" for a club that supposedly wasn't called that in those years.

The next sentence is ...
Only in the case of Wines, it doesn't appear anywhere near as obvious that he might leave.

and later ...
The other consideration for Wines is that he shapes as a future captain. The dollars on offer will be dazzling for Wines, but the smarter decision will be to stay put.

Dunno triby. I’m banking on the disingenuous part. I think he knows full well that he’s got it wrong but he’s too stubborn to admit it in spite of all the evidence that says otherwise. There are very few people left who will attempt to construct a viable argument that the PAFC pre 1997 is an unrelated entity to the PAFC post 1997, which is why they no longer bother, yet today he’s calling us Port supporters who “try to link the heritage of the Port Magpies and Port Power” as gullible. Yet in the next breath he’s criticising the Crows for ignoring “their SANFL history and the legacies of those who spawned it”. Lol…The hypocrisy is so blatant and ridiculous. I know he's pig-headed but I just don’t believe that he is that stupid.

Graham just needs to stick with what he’s good at; giving his opinion and stayed away from what he’s not good at; presenting objective facts.

Crows fans the only club where they are either the majority or close to it. Collingwood a few due to the Magpies issue. The only other club with more then a handful is Freo for some reason. There's some weird one way hate there with us entering the AFL later and a Port/dockside team as well to have more success. They got really uppity with it when their up time corresponded with our down. Now we are beating them for memberships and (IMO) closer to a flag there's a significant minority who instead of asking questions of their club and coach try to put down ours. Just bizarre.

Everyone else is largely fine with it, except Vic team fans won't hear anything about older SANFL and VFL flags bring of similar standard. In seven years in Victoria (2001-2007), I encountered almost universal respect for us as another real club unlike the others to join the AFL (crows fans there for an special dislike above others for being theatre goers with no idea, same as we feel).

Wrinkles is adamant that the "Port Power Football Club" that entered the AFL in 1997 has no connection to the PAFC which is a founding member of the AFL yet he hates "Port Power" because of the PAFC dominating the SNAFL in his time as a player and coach and for the treachery of 1990. o_O

Yeah but that's because they can't cope with the reality that we're supporting the club of our childhoods.

They abandoned theirs.

By putting us in the same boat we're all in this AFL lark together, they can also claim to be older by a whole 6 years. 9 if you're going by the ASIC documents they love to wave about.

EFA
Watch your self Augusta ;)
In the context that Pt Augusta Power is using "Port Power" he is correct because Wrinkles is still convinced that this new entity, the Port Power Football Club, appeared from nowhere in 1996.

I find it amusing that certain 90 year Crows fans claim to have supported the club all their lives :-)

was watching the replay vs West Coast in round 5 2013 (chad wingard day on fox), camera showed tyson edwards on the bench as a runner. Dwayne Russell asks "Couldn't you do anything to stop him crossing to the dark side Roo?".

Everyone knows the dark side will always triumph, because good is dumb.

What's this "Small market team" creeping into the vernacular when describing Port Adelaide these days? I've seen it twice in the last week or 2. **** off. This isn't American sport or America.
4th highest membership, ever increasing tv audience. Yep. Small market team.

It's a way for the media to artificially hold us down because they are afraid that we will cannibalise the sponsorship of other teams now that we are trending into the stratosphere with regards to membership.

It won't work, because the numbers speak for themselves.

It's the modern replacement for "Cash strapped"
