I think it would be impossible not to find a link. Best chance is maybe some random 1 gamer from way back to a random 1 gamer from an expansion team that was mostly new players, could take a lot of links.

So from AFL tables I present a new challenge.

He strangely said using not well known players.
Gerard Healy is a Brownlow Medallist. Hardly fits the description of not well known. Similarly everyone has heard of Neitz and most should have heard of Yeats and Biffin too.

Faster than I thought, Looking up Turner you could get there also via:

Farmer
Brake
Ted Thomas
Bill Scanlen
Ted Whitten
Bernie Quinlin

Maybe the next step to make it hard is to find 2 players during the war years or when there were only 4 teams and ring in players.

If it wasnt for Tony McGuiness, there could have been early Adelaide teams without many links to older players.

Will just double check Sheldon was playing in same team at Carlton when Bedford was there.
Edit. Yep, Bedford indeed played with Sheldon at Carlton in 1977 season.
