Does that allow for doping that occurred prior to the new code coming in to effect? I didn't think so. If it does though, hell yes, please go after them.
There were provisions for sanctions against support staff back then which is how they got Dank.

I meant an actual two year ban that includes two seasons of missed games. I was expecting no backdating in other words
It's fairly common for CAS to backdate their bans to the date of the original decision. They did the same thing when Contador was found guilty of using Clenbuterol. His ban was backdated and he lost all race results (including 1x TDF and 1x Giro) achieved during that period. In the end he was only off the road for about 6 months.

I truly wonder if ASADA watched today's AFL press conference, where Gil and a cardboard cut-out of Mike Fitzpatrick sat in front of a sponsorless background and claimed the players had been hard done by, and thought: "they've learned nothing. it's still about saving face. we will have to belt them again"

The Players Have No Responsibility, The Emperor Has No Clothes.

The ASADA Press conference started towards the end of the AFL one, and McDevitt was pretty impressive with his smackdowns during that. Roo was quite impressed by him too.

As I said before, no they can't. Team sanctions are at the complete discretion of the AFL. AFL have already told us they won't be taking any further action.

Which is crazy. Their systematic doping of almost their entire list of player gets less of a penalty than our "breach" of the salary cap.

Madness!

when it comes down to it, I just don't see how the players can claim to be innocent rubes hoodwinked by sharper people in authority

if they thought everything was ok:
1. why lie to ASADA testers?
2. why hide it from your doctors
3. why lie about whether Dank attended games?

I don't see how these facts can be squared with innocent, good faith

Not really less. Just different. $2million fine, relegation from finals which was a pretty massive thing, loss of picks (3).

There's also a couple of shows b4 AFL 360 .....a show on the Essendon Saga starting at 6.10pm AET

Thanks I'm recording it. It's the best and only decent footy show that covers the material well.

This in a nutshell. It pisses me off that the AFL/AFLPA (particularly) and Essendon are painting the players as victims.

Considering the media's reaction I feel like I'm the only one that was absolutely convinced the players would be found guilty and receive a ban.

They're going on about how 'shocking' it is, despite all the evidence suggesting they had taken banned substances!

I honestly thought they got off lightly by not receiving a full two-year ban

Football 'journalists' depend on the AFL for their livelihood. No surprise they are toeing the company line.

Caro is pretty much the only one with the standing and integrity to go against the grain

I'd argue that similar levels of punishment for a crime many levels above ours is pretty pathetic though. The fine is just money, and they limped into the finals in 8th place, doubt they'd have given it a shake - though I do acknowledge its a harsh penalty.

the other thing is that the players have to pick up 75% of the CAS costs. how does that get split between rich players like Jobe & Ryder versus delisted, lower down the pipe guys? surely its not fair to split evenly?

From the Age blog - quotes from Ben McDevitt's Press Conference:

Six players reported being told they were being injected with thymosin beta-4, two said they had seen vials in a fridge.

AFL Tribunal accepted Stephen Dank made plans to use thymosin beta-4, and that players had consented, and injections made, but not satisfied injections were thymosin beta-4.

**** me drunk. so the players admitted to have taking it, and the AFL tribunal was not comfortably satisfied that they had??????

jesus alive

Vader bought it up that the Club should suffer too. Why is it just the players banned, The EFC needs to close doors for 12 months IMO.

Essendon will pay it. They are terrified of lawsuits against them by players. That's why players will still get paid for the year as well. Can't have them out of pocket to claim damages and loss of earnings.

So I thought I would put on 5AA to see what was being said. Unfortunately I heard the voice of Graham Cornes. *turns off connection asap*
Good god, I listened to half of that but had to turn it off for fear I'd smash my radio with a hammer. Graham is both blind and delusional on this issue.

I presume those that left Essendon can comfortably sue the Club for loss of wages.

It would be around $1m for Ryder and Montfries. Then there is the potential civil lawsuit for reputation being forever tarnished.

Because they have, as far as the afl is concerned, been punished. This was the whole reason why the AFL wanted the interim report from ASADA. This way they say to ASADA they've already punished Essendon, so no need for additional team penalties. I agree with you, they should now be penalised for doping (given that the first punishment was for poor governance).

Total agree

The players are asked to

1. Take injections
2. Away from the club at a private clinic
3. Without the club Doctor being present or signing off the program
4. Signing consent and confidentiality forms

Surely the players would have had some level of concern that this just doesn't feel right
