MVP Tommy Boyd - The Grand Final Enigma

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Our forward line has undergone some major change since last years finals. Crameri, Dickson, Redpath and Grant have been suspended, injured, dropped and traded. In their place are second and third year players. So little wonder Stringer, McLean and Boyd, who are still learning the game are struggling a bit.

Due to injuries?

You'd never hear Hawthorn trotting that line out.. FFS who knows how we'll go next year. Look at Port - flash in the pants.

We have to treat 2015 as if its our last shot at a flag.
You are right of course (no sarcasm here). Just think tomorrow will tell us a lot. Hopefully I'll be ecstatically surprised.

It is time we just faced the fact that Tom doesn't have the intensity to be a credible and successful AFL player . Similarly rated key forwards who are less experienced have moved past him and we have made a lot of excuses to try and convince ourselves the gamble to get him will work . That game against Carlton was just too deplorable to ignore. He doesn't deserve a game on merit ( don't give me potential) in front of Roughhead, Campbell , Minson , Redpath or Hamling . Change what you are doing Tom - it takes a bloke driving trucks 15 years to earn what you do in 12 months

Someone's been holding that in for a while...

Remember to take a nap after a long night on the road, Mr Mack Truck.

Look, many of us have had some doubts about Boyd becoming the player we hope he will become and there have been some frustrating moments along the journey thus far. In my house the debate continues on what his eventual value to the team will be. One thing is clear however, Tom is genuinely trying to improve and he is smart enough to understand what he needs to do to 'get there'. Progress may be only incremental at the present but if I, as a somewhat critical observer, am prepared to give him time, then we should all do the same.
As to your point about less experienced key forwards who have moved past him, can you name one?
Like your namesake Monsieur Hulot, perhaps you should take a holiday and relax a bit and not get too agitated about Monsieur Boyd. Keep in mind that we also have a great coach who has the knack of getting the very best out of his players, this one might take just a bit longer.

While the Tom Boyd contract shits me no end, i understand why the club
did it with the need for a good news story. Your post however is a tad
over the top as he is only young, but so are the posts that proclaim him
the new hope for all mankind. If he was on 350k a year over 3 years
nobody would be talking about him and he would not have to be the
great white hope of the free world.

Looking at Hogan's stats this season and watching his game closely last night, I am not sure of the received Bigfooty wisdom that he is far far ahead of Boyd.
Developing forwards will develop.

Jack Watts is taller than Hogan and may finally be coming good at the age of 26.

Assuming he's not a troll (yet to be established) M.Hulot is entitled to his opinion here. However he gives away what's really irritating him in his last sentence. Yojimbo has hit the nail on the head. It's the size of the contract.

It's understandable that it clouds thinking but most of us have (finally) moved past the size of the contract when considering whether TBoyd will be any good and how he can get there.

So will he never make it as a player, as M.Hulot is suggesting?

Try putting him on the market at $350k p.a. and see if there are any takers. I reckon you'd get about a dozen clubs jostling to get to the front of the queue.

The size of the contract is always going to be an important issue but it needs to be separated from discussion of whether Tom Boyd will be a good footballer or not.

And as for how much players get relative to your average worker, well the whole AFL player market is an obscenity in that regard. That's not Tom Boyd's fault, it's due to the popularity of the game and the fanaticism of the supporters. But that's a separate discussion...

Did Nathan Ablett have his breakout game in a GF?
I think Tom Hawkins 'brokeout' during a finals series?
I wouldn't be surprised if this is what happens to Boyd. Slowly progresses as the season unfolds then goes bang in the finals or goes bang in next year's finals.
Boyd seems pretty big and I'm really glad we have him,he has looked ok at some stages this season but looks like he has plenty of upside still to come. I thought we really missed him against Brisbane which is a terrific sign this early in his development.

Maybe you should take a holiday.

Sorry, couldn't resist :p
