They would if he starts playing games. However if they don't, then they cannot justify that demand. Some on the GWS board still think they can get a first round pick for him.

As a matter of interest. When do GWS lose the COLA? Or will the AFL allow them to keep it just because they can?Scary thing is even if we do it for a second round pick (I expect CFC would pay a lot more) GWS can replace them immediately with:
1. Todd Marshall (use live Collingwood first round pick) - local and a big upgrade on Stewart
2. Harrison Macreadie (Possible Pick 5 use Geelong first round pick) - local upgrade on Marchbank/send homesick player home
3. Will Setterfield (Possible Top 15 use GWS first round pick) - local upgrade on WHE/not injured
4. Kobe Mutch (Possible Top 20 use Adelaide 2nd round pick) possible upgrade on injured Ahern/not injured
5. Harry Perryman (Possible Top 20 use GWS second round pick) upgrade on Barrett
6. Zach Sproule (Top 25 use CFC second round pick we trade) replace Tomlinson and is a forward
7. Connor Byrne (Top 30 use GWS third round pick) replace Pickett
This would help GWS reduce salary cap payments the required $600K to allow them to keep all their core players.
Plus it gives the new players time to develop while the current team are going so well (and GWS core are so young) and removes all the frustration around the dead wood not getting opportunities in a way that doesn't upset the playing group.
Do not think it will all happen as Patful may retire and McCarthy is also likely gone to Freo for another 2017 first round pick.
Amazingly GWS have the same amount of talent available to them again next year.

True but the player also has to agree to go to the club.If there's enough interest, they very well could.
If Richmond have any sense, they'd identify him as a high priority to play on a wing so Riewoldt can stay forward and kick goals.
Dogs have a strong running game and would be in the mix, you'd think.
Hawthorn would probably part with a late first rounder for a player like Tomlinson.
North will be wanting to keep their window open, so a ready-made player may be more attractive than a late first round draftee.
Comes down to what clubs are willing to offer.

Tomlinson chose us last year so hopefully nothing has changed this year.
Problem is Gordo, when he gets a run in the seniors, it's in a position he's not best in/used to - so naturally struggles. If they let him go crazy in the seniors, he would no doubt be pulling in 20+ disposal games regularly. But that won't happen - so we may get our wish.Tomlinson is bashing at the door to be selected for GWS, but they just cannot justify dropping any of their players for him. I kinda hope that they do not cop any injuries and they keep doing well, as Tomlinson price will surely go down if he can't play too many senior games.
I fear that when he finally gets a game, he will be very hard to drop and hence either he stays at GWS or his price will go through the roof.

He has to want to go there though.. i have a feeling Tommo will come out and say, Carlton please. As he is still contracted he cant be made to go anywhere else, so GWS HAVE to trade him to us, or keep him on their books with a salary they cant really afford. If there's enough interest, they very well could.

clearly collingwood and Eddie did the same thing with Mick... I'm waiting for the book. "How we destroyed Carlton"Clearly we sent him there as a sleeper agent to bring them down from the inside.
Lol bullshit. As if GWS has fans. Some on the GWS board still think they can get a first round pick for him.
Don't GWS need to slash 600,000 off their list to avoid salary cap issues?
They maybhave to offload someone for cheap to balance the books. May help when it comes to deals.
If Hawthorn offer pick 16 and we offer pick 23, and Tomlinson isn't fussed which club he goes to...I'm tipping GWS will take pick 16.
Us getting a bargain for him hinges on him wanting to come to Carlton at the exclusion of all other suitors. Depends whether the Bolton & Co. carrot is more appealing than the 2017 finals carrot that a few other clubs could dangle.
We have the extra carrot - come to us as a mature recruit and as long as you have the right attitude you will be given a chance to prove your worth - see the GWS and Adelaide boys as proof.
No guarantees of that if you go to the Hawks or any other team in finals contention

Would make sense..........Apparently Richmond had tabled a MASSIVE offerSupposedly Prestia has agreed to come to us but now he's asking for more money than we are willing to give.
99% he will be in Melb next year.....Prestia may be using CFC to get GCFC to pay more. Been injured, not back to his best yet, GCFC has a bigger salary cap than CFC, etc.
Sounds risky - prefer we not trade and go to the draft.
SOS has shown he does not pay high to trade in players, and wants high draft picks, so will be interesting to see what happens here.
I keep reading about Tomlinson racking up some huge stats which automatically make him seem like a wasted talent in the GWS seconds. It also makes me wonder what the standard is like in the NEAFL.
Last night on NITV, they showed the NEAFL match between NT Thunder & Canberra, the NT side won by 98 points. However, what was quite ironic is that Liam Patrick was one of the better players in the match kicking four goals. This is the same Liam Patrick who was on the Suns list and hardly fired a shot. There was also a left-footed slug called Ewing playing FF for NT who kicked a six yet you wouldn't consider him as a potential AFL player either.
The point is, maybe we need to see Tomlinson play against some serious opposition to get a "real" read on his overall ability.
That's an after-thought once you consider the academy kids they want to bring in and the extra 2 they'll probably want to chop off the list.Don't GWS need to slash 600,000 off their list to avoid salary cap issues?

All it shows is that anything vaguely resembling a professional work rate gets rewarded in the NEAFL because the standard is low. Here a point for reflection. Jed lambs best game last year in the NEAFL as a small forward was 24 touches, 8 goals and 10 marks v Sydney's reserves. He also kicked 43 goals in 17 games.
Another point to compare is Tom Mitchell whose were apparently chasing too prior to 2015 had amazing statistics, similar number to what Tomlinson is getting off a wing/forward at the moment although he was playing In the middle. Look what he is doing now.

What's that? 8 players? That would free up $1.2 million at the minimum you'd think.
Replacing them with 6 draftees...........and they replace them with players that don't require being paid?
For every player that goes out........one has to come in........and they all get paid.
