Army is better than anyone on the list in the role/s he plays. His only competition at the moment is Dylan Buckley.

It's all well to say "play the kids" (which is about as relevant a statement to modern football as "don't kick across goals") but they may not be ready or simply don't exist to fill that role.

The club is being very clever in it's use of new kids as they don't want to have them smashed against bigger bodies and they want to avoid 100 point smashings.

Completely agree PM.

FWIW I played a lot of competitive tennis when I was younger.

Playing against guys slightly better than me helped push me to work harder on my skills and fitness knowing if I did the result next time may be different.

I also played against some guys who had been playing on the pro circuit.

They absolutely smashed me!

All that did was rattle my confidence.

I can't really see why football would be any different.

We should only promote the young guys when they can at least be competitive and know that they are not far off the mark.

Don't destroy their confidence/mojo before their career has even started by just "playing the kids" - Melbourne is the classic example of this.

I know this Player is injury prone, but what about Nathan Vardy from Geelong 199cm giant who can kick straight.
Wont be getting much opportunity at Geelong with Hawkins, Kersten, Clark, Stanley in their rotating forward ruck forward line.
could get him cheap and at 24 still young.

Good good, id offer 1400 points for pick 12, but doing this though we go from having 5 or 6 live picks in the draft to 3, if we go down this road i don't see how we can cut 10 players from the list.

We can cut 10 players if we persuade out of contract players from other clubs not to sign up - then wangle them in as delisted free agents as we did with Gorringe and Wright.

This was SOS's method last year and it worked beautifully - don't see why he wouldn't try it again.

i am hoping that the discussion has been you need to work on one or two key things over the next month, get them right and then youll be back in. a lot of coaches work in blocks of 4 plus weeks rather than 1 or 2. my feel is that jaksch was the same. he needed to work on some key areas and they may have felt that full games at VFL level were more beneficial for his development. graham may well be better getting a full run on the ball at vfl as opposed to playing high hf in the seniors. get form, a few things right, learn and improve and then come back in. bolton being a teaching coach may well look at the longer term than just week to week. everyone is different

Yes, that was the case with Jaksch.
He was told that he needs to have a solid run of quality games before being considered.

His last two weeks were good as were some early season games although as has been the point for several years now:
It's really tough work being a forward in the NB's

Because he is being played OUT OF POSITION in the seniors. As I said to you previously.

Will be interesting to see where he plays this week.

He has been named in the back pocket.

GWS finished with Patton at Full Back last week.

I think Tomlinson may be too small for Jenkins or Walker so Patton may go back again with Hayes - and then Tomlinson plays forward.

Or Tomlinson goes to Lynch and Patfull (190cm) has to take one of the big forwards.

Either way I suspect I will find this game far more interesting than Tigers v Bombers at the MCG.

Still feel he'll be at Geelong next year.
Can't see any immediate need but if they were keen earlier before, they may still be now....like us with Jaksch and Tomlinson.
Sometimes you fall in love and just can't fall back out :)
??? Were Geelong keen on Graham? Am I reading that right?
If a better team is interested in one of our better fringe players, that says to me that we should keep him.

Starting to think the MC and Bolton have put a line through Nick Graham, if he keeps getting close to BOG every week in the VFL and not getting a call up to the seniors, that's pretty much alarm bell ringing time. Think he's contracted for another season, but it's hard to see him not being traded or delisted after then, and it's a shame because he's worked pretty hard and seems like a nice lad, but unfortunately, he isn't the line breaking, gut running midfield option that we need.

Don't necessarily agree with this DVB.

My take on the situation is thus:

Graham was tried as a half forward early in the year - it did not work.

When Cripps went out Graham came in and did quite well.

When Cripps came back in - Graham went straight back out.

I feel MC have decided he can only play as an inside mid - therefore will only get selected when their is a vacancy in that role.

I.e. He is back up inside mid.

We need more than just the one or two inside mids per game.
Pretty sure that if we had Ollie Wines, he wouldn't be kept out because Cripps is playing.

Funny thing with Graham is he goes in head first at stoppages in the VFL, yet somehow 'chooses' to stay back at AFL level. Not sure why.

Imaginitus setting in again DVB. :D

It's important to be first with the idea, regardless of reality, the fact it's been mooted a thousand times before or a total lack of any real evidence. If a poster can say just once in their BF body of work "I told ya", he/she can die happy it seems. Pretty sure........

Think he's been told to stay out of Cripps way!!!!!

Being serious now - I have wondered the same thing and have come to the conclusion he was given a high half forward role/outside role to play.

Nothing else makes any sense to me.

I might be biased against inside mid types because i was never a big fan of Brock McLean, in an ideal world we would find a Rory Sloane prototype to help Cripps in the guts, a tough accumulator of the pill who can actually be damaging from an attacking point of view.

But then again, i wish for many things i can never realistically have, and i genuinely hope Nicky G can prove me wrong, i admit i can be bit of an stubborn oaf with certain players (i tend to overlook Everitt's bad traits, for example)

Would love it if we could prise Macrae away from the Dogs when he is out of contract, in my fantasy world, he is the one young Dog gun that is attainable :)

I'll just leave this here........

Marchbank & Tomlinson to Carlton for our first-rounder is a done deal, might be a second or third rounder coming back our way as well.

The rationale behind this move is that the draft watchers don't believe the pool of players will be as deep as originally thought so anything outside of the Top 4 are going to be somewhat speculative. The Blues believe they will finish higher than that and would rather take the two readymade players instead of a young newbie.

This also means that the overall strategy in regards to the trading of certain players as well as what happens with our second & third round picks will have changed as well.

How do you feel about that deal? I'm confident in SOS and his people to make the right decisions for the club going forward. How certain are you about this deal?

I too implicitly trust the people at the club, if that is what their research & expertise has determined then I'll support that decision, they haven't done anything wrong thus far and I'm not expecting them to fall in a heap now.

I wouldn't say done as readily as you're saying done, although it is something we'd be keen on.

Works perfectly for us and I'd be thrilled should we get this one over the line......and I don't care who we may have got with that pick.

Hear that. Possibly more support in a team sport.
