Oh wait, we already have an underground rail tunnel and yet we're building ANOTHER one? When we still don't have reliable transit to outer suburbs like Brisbane does...

I don't think it's an actual suburb. Patterson Station is pretty new if you compare it to all the others. There was already a Bentleigh Station so they had to name this one something else. So Patterson station gets it's name from the road it's located on, Patterson Road, Bentleigh

The Catholic girls school is Bentleigh too.

I'm all for more outer suburb transport, particularly a Rowville and Doncaster rail link and extending existing lines to newer suburbs. But the 2 aren't mutually exclusive and we are at the stage where there needs to be another way for trains to get in to and across the CBD particularly for those on the Cranbourne/Pakenham/Frankston lines that make up a huge part of Melbourne. If the trains on those lines and the city loop are completely overwhelmed it's going to cause transport hold ups across the city. If they can do a major project right for once and get this sorted it will make life better for a lot of people in the South East, North West and West and the rail network can expand. Plus it should take pressure of the South East freeway, Peninsula freeway/Nepean Rd, Tulla and Princes fwy.

They've started off badly by not linking this new line through South Yarra and North Melbourne station, which would make it easier for people to change lines to either go via the loop or new tunnel or head back out via a different line. And I don't really see the need for Arden Station. As far as I know that area is well serviced by trams and buses and the extra station just seems to be thrown in between the Parkville station and connecting to whatever rail line further up.

The whole idea of the new line is to allow for more reliable and frequent travel from outer suburbs to the city. If we had Brisbane's population we wouldn't need it. The reason we can't currently put more trains on is that the network is at capacity once the trains reach the edge of the CBD, hence the need for another line through it, complete with new stations.
