Tom Browne on twitter just posted Ahern has done his ACL again. If true can see him being included in the deal to get him off GWS books. Unfortunate for the young man

Sad news for Ahern.

If true that's 2 ACLs in the last 12 months and he will no doubt miss the entire 2017 season. Would we even want him?

We already have Byrne on the out for most of next year. Recruiting someone who has just done his knee for the 2nd time? I'm sorry but that's the dumbest thing I've heard

You do realise we need to take on a few "dud deals" on from GWS in order to get the players we want.

Plowman was worth a hell of a lot more than pick 28, but we got a discount taking Sumner, Lamb and Phillips.

If taking Ahern reduces what GWS are willing to accept for Marchbank, then IMO that is a good result, plus if he comes good he is a former top 10 pick.

Odds of Marchbank for pick 23 + Ahern and Pickett for 'free' just rose! And apparently these kids have more 'potential' in their little finger than Lamb or Kedgeree.

As a club, we are not it a position to take anymore "dud deals" We already have enough players that have had serious injury during their career which could return any time now

The opposite is correct.

Say (just a hypothetical here) Pickett and Ahern are so injured they will never play again, and we are really interested in Marchbank who is worth pick 10 (just a hypothectical value).

Instead of playing funny buggers and downgrading pick 5 etc, GWS who have to downgrade their list numbers say "Look if you take these two injured blokes we will give you Marchbank for the discounted rate of pick 23".

We chuck Picket and Ahern on the list for a year and then delist.

****en ACLs ! The sooner medical science comes up with a way to stop this injury the better...
Whether it's one of our boys, an opposition player or a young bloke at local level. They work their guts out to be their best and in one horrible, ****ed up, heartbreaking second, they're not only out of footy for a year, but they endure lonely, arduous and sometimes painful months of rehab.
I absolutely HATE hearing a bloke has done an ACL. I wish the kid all the best and a speedy recovery...

Exactly!

According to Jay Clark Simmo has already triggered a one year extension back in July. It would be a bit michevous for the club to claim that as a re-signing if true.

Good point and the same goes for Rowe.

God, if GWS were giving Ahern away, we should take the risk of the list spot we'd be losing for a year.

Big yes from me but it won't work like that.

You can't take Ahern for a year then delist. Unethical.

With the amount of serious injuries Marchbank has had in his short career, we would be stupid to pay anything more than pick 23 for him alone.

Sounds a bit harsh but I get where you are coming from. We take the risk and reap the reward if they come good but lose nothing if they don't. You would have to think that a gamble on a couple of top ten picks with injury issues would have odds no worse than a speculative 3rd or 4th rounder turning into a star.

Agreed. It'd be a calculated risk which I'm not adverse to going with.

I sometimes think some people over-simplify a rebuild; i.e. get as many picks as possible and go in to the draft. However, recent SEN articles / discussions show that "good" drafting clubs have a hit / miss ratio of less than 50%, therefore, if SOS and the club hedge towards going for (relatively) more known commodities (i.e. players that have already been in the AFL system), then so be it.

I don't mind trading in guys who are coming off an injury layoff (eg. Sumner, Plowman), but trading in guys who will be in rehab for the first 12 months of their contract is outright ludicrous.

Ask for someone else (Barrett, Stewart, WHE, Buntine etc.) and look at Ahern in a year's time when his recovery can be properly assessed. He'd be just as cheap at the end of 2017.

Giants wont be giving away the kid cheap just because he has done his 2nd ACL. In fact I'd say they would be even more determined now to get him right.
