Too all those who hate this game being the opener, here is an idea on how to get in changed in the future......are you sitting down because this might shock you..........................................DON'T TURN ON THE TELEVISION, you neutral supporters are the reason why it keeps getting played as the opener because you keep watching it, you only have yourselves to blame.

Newsflash AFL, Ben Cousins hasn't played for a fair few years now a Richmond v Carlton match will not bring the punters in. It's like mediocre vs mediocre
Always the pigeons that whinge about this game.

Not bothered at all with this as the season opener... Seems to work fine, always gets a big crowd and tv audience.... And also we all have to play at some point in round 1 so i have never understood why fans complain about who gets the first match of it!

At least this game will be Carlton's grand final next year :)
Yes pups.:D
We were lucky to escape last year,I thought we were gone until Richmond pulled their fingers out in the last, just.

It's actually quite funny, more of a running joke that these 2 teams open the season. Let it continue for the laughs

Whoever is playing will get good ratings and a big crowd so completely irrelevant argument. Should atleast be 2 top 8 teams from previous year but as the AFL has shown us on numerous occasions they don't care about fairness of the league, just money.

Richmond v Carlton on a Thursday has become a great little tradition IMO. Gets the season underway with two of the more parochial supporter bases in the league. Remember 2014? What an anti climatic Round 1 that was. 42K the top crowd and 5 crowds under 25K.

It has the benefit of always being a big gate with great energy, even if the game is s**t.

Not convinced it needs to be the season opener, but a lot of the other big energy games are either derbys, locked into fixture (Coll/Ess) or somewhat fading (Haw/Gee is still great, but not what it was)
