no offence but F the players. They have plenty of time to recover.

i have a gap in my sporting Diary between Jan and March and i refuse to make that any longer.

Full scale match sim today, 37 degrees. Mid February.

It’s ludicrous.

Everything needs to go back a month.
Play in Perth at the end of March and you still may be copping that. Sydney, Brisbane and GC could be even worse than that with the heat and humidity

Gee, change it all to accommodate the Vic clubs, eh?

Not hard to deal in facts as I did in the OP

Here's the BOM monthly median temperatures by capital cities for the 1991-2020 dataset.

EVERY city is hotter in Feb and Mar than it is in October and November.

The difference is actually largest in Perth.

Nobody has any business playing football in Feb, and March should be purely for necessary practice matches. The calendar is broken.

What's the issue here?

If players were dropping like flies from heat stroke then yeah, I'd agree.

Don't recall that happening though.

Melbourne and Adelaide have proper winters.

Camel's armpit all year round everywhere else.

I don't disagree with you, I forgot what the original thread was about. The last weekend of March/1st weekend of April is a much better time to start the season and push the season into October.

Will never happen given the links that betting agencies have with both the AFL and horse racing

Will say that it was dumb of clubs all week to put these match sim on during the day

This thread is a great way to get heat off the fact that Essendon hasn’t won a final in over 7000 days…

Top elite players should be able to play in any conditions, whether it’s humidity, heat, cold, rain, snow. I mean if your bitching about one type weather extreme, then I say, let’s not have any games in July, as it’s too bloody cold to go out, and might cause unwanted shrinkage.

This is the most absurd thing I have read, and that’s saying something…

Gee, change it all to accommodate the Vic clubs, eh?

I think the point is that they have changed it, in a very stupid way.

Season used to start at the beginning of April. In a very short space of time they have changed it to be a full month earlier. Preseason games used to be night matches, too.

It isn't just about the heat. It impacts on preseason training which is limited by Christmas/new year break. It thus also impacts on the start of the season, the rate and type of injuries, and benefits older teams (who rely less on building a fitness base and learning positioning). Note that the off-season stuff (trade week, draft, etc) has stayed the same, not pushed forward.

Has any other professional sport in the world just gone 'well, we are going to add three weeks to the start of the year, so you just get less preparation and practice time'? I would be surprised. The NFL, for example, has always started it's season on the first weekend on September. When it recently added a 17th match it kept the start date and pushed the rest back. They have a very rigid preseason schedule (from the last week of July) that was followed as well.

I daresay it's due to the players now getting more time off.

Then there's the fact we now have an extra round and they seem unwilling to push the GF back to October, due to traditions.

I think it is more the latter and it is stupid.

The main October issues are spring racing (Melbourne only, and hardly competitive with footy at this point) and domestic cricket (which is ripe for a schedule change of its own given it now has a massive big bash hiatus anyway).

Would make much more sense imo to push the GF back 2-3 weeks and get rid of opening round.

It’s far too early and a reflection of an obnoxious governing body obsessed with making money and trying to squash other sports. The Sheffield shield final ( a far higher standard of competition, relevant to AFL) will be relegated to a suburban ground to accommodate the AFL playing in March. Disgrace imo.

March is when the season should start, only that it should be 2 weeks later. Pre finals bye, gather round and opening round are all sneaky ways the AFL has extended the season, as theyre so hellbent on crushing every other sport and being in the news 24/7 all year around. We should be starting on March 20th at the very earliest, or the 27th. Any earlier than that is fk'n stupid and makes no sense

It's always been hot in Australia in February, but I also don't remember so many day games in the pre-season.

The AFL has kicked away a great institution in playing scratch matches in country areas, so you'd think they'd be using these city venues at night. no idea why they insist on playing all these pre-season games at like 11am.

Bringing Eesendon's recent finals record into a thread about the heat is the most absurd thing I have read.
