Apparently Hardwick has the VFL/AFL record for most games coached without a finals win.

Coming up with some oddball stuff in my search for the answer.
Malthouse has the record for most games at one club without a flag (260 with Collingwood, but he did coach 3 GFs in that time - including the draw), but that wasn't his first flag, as he already had 2 with WC.

OK, I've gone back to the 1990 premiership and this is what I've come up with:
Malthouse - coached 211 games before finally winning his first flag with WC in 1992
Mark Thompson (who I would've guessed) - 184 games prior to 2007 GF win
Mark Williams - 143 games and won in 2004
John Worsfold - 120 games and a flag in 2006
Leigh Matthews - 113 games before his first flag with Collingwood
Denis Pagan - 94 games and a flag in 1996 *shudders*
Clarkson - 92 games before getting lucky with Hawks in 2008
Blight - 86 games before a flag in 1997
Roos - 83 games before flag in 2005
Beveridge - 48 games before last year's flag
Longmire - 48 games before 2012
And...
Chris Scott - walked into a flag contender and delivered after just 24 games
Bolton - TBA

If we turn out for our first pre-season game in 2018 and serve up a performance like we did last Saturday, the drums will softly start beating.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's only pre season and blah, blah, blah, but we were an absolute shambles on the weekend. We looked, easily, like the least organised team in the competition; when responding please notice I'm making a distinction between structure and skill.

Yes the players will have been rusty, that I can completely understand, but structurally, my lord... Again we played with a forward line set-up (note: structure) that would have a local footy coach in the cross hairs.

If after another 12 months we look no better, Bolts will be under the pump.

Totally disagree. One practice match and people are making strange assessments. We are rebuilding and have a while to go. We still haven't turned over our list completely yet. Practice matches mean bugger all.

This time next year we will have another 6-10 new kids. Murphy & Simmo will be older, Gibbs may be gone. Our draftees will still be very young and very inexperienced. Our only genuine established A grader will be Cripps. Lots have potential but won't be there yet.

IMO this and next year will see some average performances as kids get experience. It's the only way and what makes it harder is we could have 20-25 kids to try and develop. I am sure the club understands this and realise that both Bolton & SOS need time and it's certainly more than 2-3 years.

We were very bad last weekend, regardless of it being a practice match or not. No excuses there - the players should have played the team defence far better.

BUT, there's no point in becoming too critical or concerned. We saw last year how a season can ebb and flow, and clearly the club has bought into Bolton's plan and will see it through. Results and performances can't be ignored but they also deserve context.

I think your view is both balanced and accurate ShanDog. Im in the "Its only pre season" camp but the performance was noticably poor. Defensive pressure and structure was almost non existent, and these kind of performances for a club trying to sell hope are far from ideal.

I expect to loose to Stk on Sat but im hoping for a much better showing. The footy played in Round 1 will be unrecognizable to the footy played in the JLT which is why you cant read too much into it.

I agree with your principle but completely disagree with your time-frame.

He has had to radically turnover a woefully depleted list whilst injecting a new spirit & culture across the whole club at the same time. It is a massive workload that simply takes time to get right.

We are only halfway through the rebuild so I think you should give him till the end of the 2018 season before you start to intensely scrutinise his any of his work. Anything less than that is just unfair and short-sighted.

By that time SOS & Bolton should have completely revamped the list and some of the younger players should be starting to really blossom after being in the AFL system for three years. If they aren't showing improvement, you may have reason to criticise then.

Until I see good reason to be concerned, then I'm strapped in for the full ride and know it is going to be an exciting one.
