MVP Tommy Boyd - The Grand Final Enigma

Scrag with some quality click bait there.
Yep

However, one point I agree on is his 2nd half in the prelim and GF should be his base.

He is a Forward/Ruck not just a forward though so should be judged in that context

I think people saying that the grand final should be his base are under selling how good that performance was under the highest of pressure. He ended up with 8 marks 6 contested 14 disposals and 3 goals 2. He does that every week he's close to the best tall player in the competition at 21.

IF you watched him at Eastern before he was drafted, you would think the GF was baseline. He dominated at u18 level and junior club level. I expect more from him because he has that potential.
People love Bont but big Tom can challenge that level. IMO no one else in the AFL has that potential.

It's kind of tough when nobody else in the league has that as their baseline though. That's a fair bit to ask.

Nick Riewoldt has 3 goals from 3 grand finals and never got close to 6 contested marks.
We're setting the bar extremely high for Tom considering talls take longer - Rory Lobb at the same age had yet to debut for example.

He Was playing against kids though. Now he's a kid against men. As a tall that's harder than when you're a mid.

I loved it when David Schwarz exclaimed on SEN mid season that big tall forwards like Patton and Boyd were becoming irrelevant and useless because of the reduced mobility.

It was literally a week before Patton went on an absolute tear and then Tom played a pivotal role in winning a premiership for us.

Should have won the shittest media call of the year award. I wish that award existed.

Some fierce competition for that one.

Schwarz is another egg eight years past his use-by date.

Shudder to think how much money the football media pours into occupying bored retirees.

So he plays one okay game and he's now immune from criticism? Please.

Let's be honest for a minute: his Grand Final wasn't that great. He kicked three goals. 2 were sitters that came from the brilliance of Bont. The third came from a lucky bounce. Apart from that what did he do? Took 4 marks around the ground?

Too many Tom Boyd apologists around here in my opinion. He gets praised like a hero just for doing the basics. His grand final day performance should be the base line for the acceptable level for him.
Can you just STFU? I can't read your shitty posts anymore.

I used to ignore ScragCity because when I first read his stuff here I thought he was an alt account for a bloke from.a different club.

Ignore his trolls and the rest he posts is pretty decent... just don't bite the trolls posts!

Sort of like sifting for a fleck of gold in a pile of bullshit.

Mate genuine question - can you see Boyds marking on the lead improving I really don't recall him grabbing many even chesties?

I don't think he's really ever been an on the lead mark style player. I didn't watch a lot of him as a junior, but blokes that size typically monster opponents or just jump over them in packs. So it might be something that develops with his tank. When he's fitter and more seasoned he won't be as fatigued at the end of leads, especially if he's spent time in the ruck.

I don't think he'll ever be a super strong lead up forward but I still think he'll be a good marking forward.

And he's becoming a very useful ruckman with very little experience in that position.

Despite the ****ups he had a decent line tonight for playing a lot of ruck.

Watching him play and listening to his SEN interview this week, I get the feeling he prefers the ruck and marking when the ball is going the other way. Had a couple of Scott Wynd moments tonight.

If he can improve his fwd marking and tap work (which has already improved) he could be devastating as he is a beautiful long kick and is a good follower IMO.

Had A few good taps tonight and one shocker in the last. Personally I think he's developing nicely.

Thought Tom was alright as the main ruck tonight, 27 hitouts and 15 disposals. Just didn't take advantage of a couple opportunities forward.

New PB for hitouts, previous best 21 in the prelim

He's starting to win with strength

I mean sure. But we're not paying him to be Tom Hickey.

I need some clunks & goals!
I want that too...but with Roughead and Campbell both randomly getting injured at once without even 1 game between them and our other ruck option being a 19 year old beanpole, Boydy sort of has to be our Tom Hickey for now.
