Dodoro mentioned on Bomber Radio a few weeks ago about getting mids in this years draft.
Mids and half back flankers yeah. I don't mind it provided we also get a key forward and a ruckman. If I were to pick a dream group of draftee's for this year (assuming we take say 4 picks) I'd say (and before you lot say anything I know this would never happen):
- Darcy Fogarty: Big bodied 3rd tall forward/inside mid.
- Sam Hayes: Really good ruck/fwd.
- Cameron Rayner: Explosive inside mid/medium forward.

Again I know it'd never happen but if you combine that with the rumours of Brodie Grundy, etc. we'd have one hell of a side with those guys in it in a few years, i.e.

B: Ambrose - Hurley - McKenna
HB: McGrath - Hooker - Ridley
C: Laverde - Heppell - Mutch
R: Grundy - Fogarty - Z.Merrett
HF: Laverde - Daniher - McDonald-Tipungwuti
F: Fantasia - Hayes - Francis

I/C: Rayner - Langford - Begley - Parish

We have been getting smashed in clearances all year our forward line will become even more dangerous if we have a dominant mid field.
Would I be wrong in saying that Sloane, Bont, Fyfe, Martin, Gray, Ablett, Dangerfield are the best midfielders in the game? 5 of the 6 are players who have heavy rotations forward of center.

"Pure mids" as a concept is stupid and I will call anyone who says otherwise out on it. Having the flexibility to play these guys anywhere is more important

Dodoro even addressed that when discussing what we would target. Something I'm not a fan off at TAC level is the lack of clubs trying to add flexibility to players. Oakeligh and Calder did this well this week with Podhajski who usually plays in defence was sent forward and kicked 6 goals and Wooler who was struggling on a good opponent was put into the midfield and then ended up getting of the leash and kicking 3 goals in the last quarter.

Yeah, in most of the last 10 years we've taken a ruck in one of the drafts. Just hasn't felt like it!
That'd be because the ones we've taken haven't really been up to scratch lol. If we take a ruckman in this draft it has to be either Sam Hayes or Callum Coleman-Jones (which means a first rounder). Hoping we get more than one 1st in this draft.

Using the ladder predictor I reckon we'll finish about 12th, which would net us Pick 7 in the draft, which you would think would be around the mark for Hayes.

I like your way of thinking but even then I would take best mid.

Yeah just mucking around - I'd always go best available in general in first round. Typically that is more likely to be a mid but if the cards fell the right way and there was a gun KPP or ruck the club really rated I'd back them in to go that way.

Not for mine.

Big men play a part but only minor in my books.

Runners all the way!
Hayes could be the next Gawn, id much rather have him than go for Grundy and then use the money we would have used for Grundy in getting an established young gun mid.

Do we really want to end up like Carlton in recent years and Collingwood now though? Being obsessed with mids and flankers while overlooking quality talls is what has led to their sharp declines.

I wouldn't want Grundy or Gawn though for the price that they would cost!

I think the talls we have now are good enough. The ruck is an issue but I believe with more time and a better quality midfield that will be fixed.

We have to remember that the whole center square arrangement has only played together for 8 rounds.

We continue to build our midfield and that includes getting experience into the ones we have and we are in premiership mode in two years in my opinion.

I get what you are saying but I'm of the belief that its not all about the personal its also about systems.

I like the talls we have now and most of them are young and still have improvement.

If our midfield starts clicking then we can be anything.
