I disagree, Taranto has proven beyond a shadow of doubt he is an A+Grade midfielder and that will be his prime position, Will Setterfield is a gun inside midfielder and has rarely played elsewhere.......and both are only ordinary pace wise. As "defensive" forwards Cameron has them easily covered. They would have been pissed when the GCS swooped on Ben Ainsworth so early or he would have been a Sun. In all likelihood they'll lose a couple of mids again this trade period too.
Perhaps. But if there's no spot for them in midfield, and there may not be as they develop, they'd likely play up forward where Taranto is playing now and Setterfield has done albeit a different forward role to what you'd expect of Cameron.

The key to building and good trading is to get these established players without giving away valuable assets. I.e. Hawthorn giving away draft picks for Burgoyne/lake/gibson/gunston. Bad trading is giving away a valuable assets for a top player i.e. Carltons trade with west coast. As good as Judd was Kennedy as well as pick 2 was in hindsight a bad trade.
Kelly is uncontracted if he wants to leave he can and GWS will trade for picks that they can use on their academy products. If we start trading players like smith, lynch, Cameron as well as draft picks I don't believe we will gain a better position.
Also smith is being extremely underrated here. His speed and kicking is a weapon, he has a great spoil and is very dependable, not to mention I don't think Rory laird would be able to play the way he does if smith was not in the team (there is potential for a Mackie enright type partnership developing)

If these changes are implemented the AFL will be changed forever, can't see how the AFL will ever hope to "equalise" the clubs once adopted.

Free agents for life: AFL to relax player movement rules

One of the most contentious issues in the modern game - free agency - is about to be relaxed in the new collective bargaining agreement with the players.
Under a raft of proposed changes, the AFL Players Association has demanded three significant reforms in a bid to allow footballers greater freedom of movement. Fairfax Media understands that the AFL has agreed to introduce at least one of the following free agency platforms as early as next season and definitely by 2019: Free agency for life - any player remains a free agent after eight years of service in the game regardless of how many years he has played at his current club;
  • Portable free agency - any player can move to the club of his choice after eight years' service whether or not those years have all been at the one club;
  • Four-year free agency - any player earning on or under the median AFL wage would be free to choose a new club after four years of service.
Players potentially falling into that four-year category at the end of 2017 include Zak Jones (Sydney), Blake Acres (St Kilda), Jarman Impey (Port Adelaide), Daniel McStay (Brisbane) and Tom Barrass (West Coast).

But the question is, if we couldnt negotiate a deal for Kelly that involved only picks, but a deal (possibly with a third club) could be agreed which involved losing Smith, Lynch or Cameron, would you do it. Would that be a good trading strategy for us?

Those changes will benefit Victorian clubs significantly and ream everyone else.

The only way those changes should pass is if player trading without consent is introduced, as well as longer contracts for draftees

We've finished higher than 6th only once in ten years. Let's not get too high on our own supply

So have they.

Not saying our side is the be all of great players but people thinking it is Betts and Sloane only that would be best 22 in that side are nuts

You do realise champion team / team of champions thing isn't a thing though?

Last seasons Grand Finalists would beg to differ I reckon.

I dont remember the Dogs list having any more praise heaped upon it than ours prior to last season. Now all of a sudden everyone suggests that they have an awesome list.
Why? They won the flag I guess.

What a little bitch.
Holding shit clubs to ranson.
McCarthy should have banned for 2 years.
If you don't follow the rules you get two years off.
I agree with Fagan top 10 picks should be 3 years. Or Mutul trade

If this load of absolute bollocks comes to fruition, it'll be time to start drafting SA or NT lads as a priority.

Honestly the VFL can go **** themselves
It's the players pushing for this, not the AFL.

Drafting SA lads exclusively also won't stop us from losing players to massive offers either.

"The player movement group which includes Geelong's Stephen Wells" ..... of course it would [emoji849]

Why not? Real Madrid a few years ago comes to mind. US basketball dreamteam at the Olympics in Greece. Many others are there.

Prob agree with that but how much of an upgrade is he?

Luke Brown, CC & 1st + 2nd?
In value terms that's prob right but we would need some late picks from them to balance it out numbers wise ie late 3rd/ 4th or so rounder they won't use anyway

As I stated in a previous post the other night 1st Round - 4 years, Round 2 - 3 years, Round 3 - 2 years, Round 4 and onwards - 1 year with the right to re-contract to a mutually agreed term. Do away with the Rookie Draft altogether.

Once the Collective Bargaining Agreement and salary cap is signed off and is 10% to 20% (1 to 2 million) extra.

We offer Rockliff 800k 4 year deal. Brisbane take compo pick 2.
We trade Jenkins to Brisbane for pick 19.
Pick 19 to Carlton for Gibbs.
Hopefully sign both Lever 500k and McGovern 400k.
Mackay should have been payed out fully or near fully after missing Gibbs last year.

Assuming the salary cap rise will include a payrise to the minimum waged players which wouldn't be a great chunk. If cap goes up 20% thats 2 million extra. Jenkins and Mackays wage pays for Rockliff with 150k change. Gibbs was front ended by Carlton so he won't be 700k a year more like 500k. Lever and McGovern assuming Lever is paid 250k and McGovern maybe 150k-200k now giving 500k-600k payrise between them. Bottom wage increase rise I'll leave 300k out for that which could be high. Leaves 800k spare.

I don't think we will land a Kelly Dusty or Fyfe one of these 3 should be plan A definitely.

Now I might be ambitious here but Hawks need picks. If we offered Rioli 700k 3 year deal and gave Hawks our 2017 1st and 2018 3rd.

In. Rockliff, Gibbs, Rioli
Out. Jenkins, 2017 1st, 2018 3rd
Crazy or not?
