Wasn't Fletch still a student at the school and 17 or 18 though?

Yes - Fletcher missed an AFL game to play for his school and was promptly sent to the VFL for 2 weeks.

Yeah. I figured Battle must have been way too old to still be at school! Apparently he isn't.

fun exercise done on AFL.com picking the state sides.
I know it will never come back but imagine getting to watch this team play

B: Heath Shaw, Robbie Tarrant, Dylan Roberton
HB: Easton Wood, Michael Hurley, Sam Docherty
C: Josh Kelly, Joel Selwood, Zach Merrett
HF: Marcus Bontempelli, Joe Daniher, Dustin Martin
F: Toby Greene, Jeremy Cameron, Eddie Betts
R: Shane Mumford, Patrick Dangerfield, Rory Sloane
INT: Ollie Wines, Gary Ablett, Andrew Gaff, Clayton Oliver
UNLUCKY: Marc Murphy, Scott Pendlebury, Tom Lynch (Gold Coast), Matthew Kreuzer, Seb Ross

Id personally have Pendles in there somehow, maybe push out Gaff or Sloane.

I think Talia would be ahead of Tarrant, they would treat it like an All-Australian side and have as much players from the top teams as possible. Would love to see it back but don't think it will ever happen again which sucks

Well that is false for 2 reason.

1) The AFL had its own reserves comp then so would not have been sent to the VFL
2) The most games Fletcher missed in sequence in 1993 was 2. Meaning he missed 1 for his school game and missed at most 1 senior game as punishment.

Which round did he knock back senior selection to play for his school?

He had an agreement with the club that he would be available to play for PEGS (The coach was Ken Fletcher). The club allowed him to play. I think it was twice that season both against IGS (including the AGSV grand final).

Yeah he was never punished. He was allowed to play.

Pendels over Ablett easy this year
I would say Gaff or Oliver. My team right now would be:

Wood - Tarrant - Talia
Shaw - Hurley - Docherty
Kelly - Selwood - Merrett
Martin - Cameron - Bontempelli
Greene - Lynch - Daniher
Mumford - Dangerfield - Sloane
Ablett - Pendlebury - Gaff - Wines

Betts being in SA.

He played vs Brisbane in 1993 so that articles research is average :p

Sadly, that info is on the official Essendon website, which makes working out what game he missed that much harder. An article in the Herald Sun claims he missed playing against the Lions for the Ivanhoe game

Would make sense. He missed Fitzroy and Hawthorn and then was back for Melbourne.

Agreed. No need for Roberton when you have Hurley and Wood.

Remember hearing about a cool stat at the start of the year. Was about the high percentage of times that the team you beta in Round 1 you will finish higher at the end of the year and at this stage all but 1 team is below the team they beat in round 1 and that's Brisbane with Gold Coast.

Richmond(5th) beat Carlton(17th)
Essendon(11th) beat Hawthorn(14th)
Port Adelaide(8th) beat Sydney(15th)
Bulldogs(4th) beat Collingwood(12th)
West Coast(6th) beat North Melbourne(13th)
Adelaide(1st) beat GWS(2nd)
Geelong(3rd) beat Fremantle(7th)
Melbourne(9th) beat St Kilda(10th)

Brisbane(18th) beat Gold Coast(16th)

So if anyone brings up "Its only Round 1" after a loss they are looking rather silly haha

You could say that GWS are an exception
I meant more in the case of the supporters of the team you beat, so Hawks supporters didn't have a leg to stand on for our win against them haha

How's that Hawthorn bandwagon going?
