Makes no sense to re-sign Gibbs to a longer contract at this point.

Let's all be honest for a moment, he is very talented, but do we want to retain him because he is a bigger body, leader etc, or because he helps us to win some games short-term?

I don't want to lose any senior, talented, leaders of our club, but nor do I want to retain all of them, thinking we already have the nucleus of a premiership side. There would be no doubt, that he would still be considering a trade home, despite the comments from the club suggesting otherwise.

The benefit medium/long term of trading him, outweighs the short term benefits of keeping him
Long term i would rather retain Gibbs than Murph, but that may not be feasible.

Our back-line sure is getting a lot of air-play this week.
The names Docherty, Jones, Marchbank, Simpson, Plowman and Weitering are getting a good work out.

Given we still have Macreadie & Byrne in the sheds, along with ASilvagni injured and Williamson and Sheehan building, I see little reason to be chasing Lever, May or even Rance. We just wouldn't do it.

I would chase May and play him as a forward

Woah. Where did Rance come from? Surely be a dumb move.

One thing I would say about Gibbs, I am extremely impressed with his attitude and professionalism given what took place during last year's off season. His performances this year show real class and character. If he does request a trade, I hope he handles it with the same class.
I wouldn't be surprised if a possible trade of Gibbs isn't even brought up until an actual trade goes down this year (if he decides to go). I think all parties would want to keep things as low-key as possible. Carlton tells the media Gibbs is staying, Crows tell the media they aren't interested, Gibbs stays quiet and then the trade is made public when a deal is struck.

I must say though that I will be happy to keep Gibbs, quality players who are good finishers when the game is on the line are very difficult to find, I love watching Gibbs play. I'm with pafloyul in that I only want Kelly if Gibbs goes because otherwise our draft position will be obliterated for two years straight (unless someone can tell me another way - but I just can't see it, his cost will be huge). Hopper is a no-brainer, really hope we can get him.

I understand and respect your preferences, I just hope he doesn't say I will see out this contract if you don't want to trade me and we end up getting less for him, plus we are another 2 years behind from putting games into another kid.

Sure we will both see what happens at the end of the year :thumbsu:

This I 100% agree with you, that would be worst case for us. That's why I want us to extend his deal. For me it's extend or trade.

Not the point, he's not a KPF (which we arguably need) and he's only one player. I say we go after him only if Gibbs goes, unless this year's first rounder and steak knifes gets it done. Hopper will be a bit easier. The idea of getting Kelly makes us bring out the same logic we used when we traded in Judd, if we get him in, we don't need to address other issues.

The idea of getting in Kelly is because he is a great player, that's it. Are you seriously of the opinion of not picking up someone because they are too good?

The Chris Judd deal is irrelevant, the whole club has changed since then. Is SOS goes for it then I'm happy with that.

I agree with you on your worry about a key forward but am optimistic with McKay and think Charlie will be more of a fwd than anything else.

We might be able to keep Gibbs, keep one of our 2017/18 first rounders and get Kelly. It all depends on what the Hawthorn favour may be.

Remember MS3 said SOS could get Kelly without giving up two first rounders

Here's some food for thought.

Gibbs was signed to a 5-year deal somewhere in the vicinity of $550K per annum. The club front-loaded the deal so he was paid way more in the first two years, for argument sake, let's say it was $850K in those two years, this means that he would be getting $350K for the final three years (speculating on the actual numbers but they are irrelevant right now).

If Adelaide had of been able to secure him last year (spitballing ..............3-year deal on $700K per annum) then he would of had a huge payrise due to the Blues doing him (and them) a favour with the front-loading.

Seems a little unfair on Carlton that they have coughed up the bulk of their 5-year deal only to see him leave when the annual figure drops.

So, should there be some sort of compensation back to Carlton (or any club for that matter) who finds themselves in that position ??
Not compensation but surely a commercial term of negotiation

I think Graham will stay on another 1 year contract.
I think Thomas and Jones will also get another year (start of the year it was Thomas, Jones and a Jaksch as the first 3, Gorringe, Graham, Buckley, Boekhorst ...)
Palmer has another year, Kerridge too.

Going ...
White and Armfield (both retired), Gorringe, Buckley, Jaksch, Boekhorst (I think he played ok against Suns, couple of mistakes, but let's see how he goes, should get another 2-3 games) So 6
Rookies ... JGM, Gallucci, Korcheck

Rowe to rookie list as KPD cover (let's not forget that ASOS and Jones are getting games due to injuries / to help the kids)

And we may lose Gibbs and Casboult too ...

I think we need to move on from Graham.
We are not dependent on Graham for anything, we now have more depth and there's another SOS spectacular just around the corner.

Sadly...........this is correct.

Not happy to have to say it because I've backed Nick from day one, but there seems to be next to no lift from where he is.

Favour from Hawthorn? They aren't in a position to give anyone a favour. Great era from them and you would take the premierships any day, but they are in for a world of pain. This favour stuff just sounds like BS to me, we got Macreadie, Polson and Williamson out of that deal (maybe replace one of the latter 2 with Kerr, I'm not sure). We wanted picks in a deep draft.

So we have 4 rising star noms this season. Charlie is likely to get one sooner or later.

The record is 8. Held by GWS in 2012. This can show you that it usually takes 3-4 years for the kids to develop.

Our older brigade consists of 3 number 1 draft picks and a number 2 draft pick.

If he have the 5 nominations, surely that has to be close to 2nd most ever from one team in a season.

Should give us great confidence that we will be dominant again quite soon...

Just on a side note which will interest our draft experts and traders:

After speaking to a few people about potential draftees this year, it was expressed to me that there are only 30-35 players which have been classified as AFL grade prospects, the lowest by some way in 10 years...

Brett Anderson has gone with this in the media, with his own list only having 29 on it!

We've heard it all before but next year is extremely deep with plenty of bottom ages already at AFL draft level...
