As a player who would want to put their six figure salaries in jeopardy by coming out and saying "Our coach is hopeless, we need new leadership", no player is going to put their future in jeopardy by telling the truth.

If you was earning $500k Chris Mayne salary, you wouldn't want to speak out. You just rock up, do the bare minimum and collect your cheque.

Unless you are a player coming out of contract!

That further enforces my point that they're doing everything they can to support him! There was Hendy in there mentoring him before this unnamed person too! At what point do we say enough of the hand holding? He's had 6 ******* years to work on his people skills. Name another role where someone would be given that long to fix such a crucial area? I mean nurturing and developing people is the most important trait a coach needs and Buckley still needs work on it... I just don't get it.

Also you admit his gameday coaching is rubbish yet here we are discussing his future?

In regards to the bolded to repeat I'm strongly anti Pert. The only high ranking football employee that I would deem safe currently is Walsh.

Largely though the discussion has done little to convince me that he's lacked any type of support he needed to succeed. If anything it's re-affirmed my POV given you provided further evidence of the support he's received!

I have a bigger concern that the super egos in the club will undermine anything at the moment (and would have for the last few years). It is pretty easy to isolate Bucks as he is the personification of our on field success or failure (mostly failure). The team is greater than this. There is, and has been for a while, something stinky in the team. Maybe that rests solely with the cockroach but i am not convinced that is the case. Hindsight with its 20/20 will be horrendous is he goes elsewhere and succeeds whilst we wallow in the current morass.

Perhaps that he isn't exactly drawing from a massive sample size? It was a meaningless statement because of course Buckley is better than anyone else because he's his first in an elite environment. It holds as much weight as Leon Davis coming out tomorrow and saying MM was the best coach he ever played for!

Whereas Watson saying the same for Worsfold holds weight because he's played under some damn good coaches.

Yes, IMO. They provided him an undeserved contract last year, brought in his best mate as a coach, Brough Balmey to protect him as a Buckley man, McGuire tried to water down Buckley's "finals or bust" comments and they've defended him at every turn in regards to re-shaping the list. What else could they have done in that respect? What resources do you think he's been denied that other clubs have access to?

Eade left by his own volition, ditto Walsh and Gubby would still be there if not for the suspension. At every step they've had opportunities to fix the areas I've highlighted yet they remain problem areas! Why didn't Balme step in to fix things during his 18 months at the club?

Let's get real in terms of public comments from the CEO. Prime Minister aside Buckley's role is the most pressurised in Australia so he cops it regardless of Pert gobbing off. If he's not capable of handling that pressure anyway he isn't the man I want in charge of the club because the greats deal with it and get the job done.

That's not to defend Pert either because he needs to go, but the board have done everything in their power to provide Buckley the tools to succeed. At some point he needs to take on ownership of our continued failings and that time has come now that we can't make the finals, IMO.

I understand that list decisions tend to come about through consensus but have the power brokers ever stopped him and others, pointed at their watches and said "mate, the clock is ticking. You need a key position back and forward. Your time is finite."
I am in now way absolving him of his responsibilities but it seems as though giving someone what they want doesn't necessarily address their needs.

As an outsider looking in i feel its a culture problem,One week we play well and look like a really good team,and the next week we look like a very average team,Again i have no reason what the cause is,Reminds me of work as in some people turn up ready to go and other weeks people just turn up happy to get their pay cheque at the end of the week.

Didn't say you did compare Thomas and Treloar, only used Treloar as a example because he is on Thomas type money, I assume you saying I put words in your mouth is about bleating for Thomas, if wrong I'm sorry but really not sure why you would even bother to put Thomas up as some sort of example, has very average player at the moment and a long way from where he was. Sorry, can't agree with this one. If it hadn't been for one particular teacher (miles ahead of anyone before or after), not sure my interest in the English language and other areas of learning would have been so keen.
I really like your analysis on the game but sometimes I think that anything to do with Buckley you get a little subjective.

Never has been as good as he was at Collingwood and never said he was but he's in carltons best 22 and earning his spot - that is hardly cooked

That's probably stretching a little far, Hazard a guess; it looks externally that bucks has the group by and large behind him. If they weren't they probably wouldn't comment publicly at all or if door stopped they'd say something like "that decision lies with the board at seasons end and I'm behind him" IMV a comment like that is a fair way off what JDG and Pendles said

This is a very good post.

Stepping away from bucks as I don't know the circumstances, but as a general principle I don't think having the coach make list decisions is the best way to go about it, and I certainly don't agree with decisions by committee. Coaches are under pressure to deliver results often immediately, whilst the list needs to balance the short, medium and long term needs. Sometimes those interests can diverge.

I think he brought up his age as a reference to the fact that de Goeys experience in the system is limited to a couple of years and to one club, so his judgement about who his best ever coach is might not carry much weight. But I don't know exactly what he meant, ask him

In this instance I don't actually care if you agree because you're the one with the issue. It also had nothing to do with Buckley and everything to do with the immaturity of JDG's comments. You missed that. Move on!

Im not so sure about it. He should have been sacked 2 or 3 years ago and was given extensions for no reason other than being Nathan Buckley. The right call was to delay the succession plan to begin with and that was stuffed up as well courtesy of some bs contract and the name Nathan Buckley.
