The biggest problem with the Crows list management is we will always have to do more with less. This is because we are NOT the footy heartland of Victoria....it's really that simple.

In effect our salary cap will ALWAYS be tighter than the Melbourne clubs. Why? Because we will always have 8 or so other clubs trying to lure Vic talent back home....so we end up paying overs for many of our players to keep them.

Everyone is saying...."just pay Lever the 800k" .....but last year it was "just pay Jenkins the 700k" ....how much then for McGovern??? ....we pay Betts a fair chunk of coin....I'm guessing Walker does OK. Lynch is an important link up player across half forward....so I'm guessing he's had a pay rise on his last contract.

Does anyone get where I'm going with this???? ....all these "must keep" players....how many can we ACTUALLY afford ???? ...especially when "cashed up" Vic clubs come knocking on the doors of our Vic lads.

At some point it catches up with us and the price of keeping Jenkins, Sloan, B Crouch (who got a nice pay rise last year due to "sniffing" Vic clubs) Talia, Jacobs, Smith, Laird, Cameron.

The amount of talk I hear about "all the money we must have"..."war chest for a Danger replacement" etc....makes ZERO logical sense.

Our club swims against the tide to retain players and pays overs almost EVERY single time.

Unless some players REALLY want to stay....get ready to lose some...as we are running out of available cash FAST !!!!!

This my friends is what the "CAP" is designed to do....unfortunately for the interstate clubs...you get less of a window with your new stars to win a premiership before it bites.

That is the price you pay for being a non-Victorian VFL club. Simple.

"Potentially winning flags". Is that better professor?

If Bock, Davis, Tippett, Danger, Gunston had stayed. The chances of a flag would have been pretty good.

Agreed.

But Gunston won a flag.

Tippet has gotten close with Sydney a number of times.

Davis has as good a chance to win a flag this year as we are, if not better.

Geelong likely wise are neck and neck with us for a flag.

Bock is the only one you could argue had less shot at a flag with another club.

Also only one of those players plays at the MCG as a home ground.

All true, except my original comment was in reference to Collingwood and players who go to shit teams like that e.g. Treloar, Prestia etc.

I'd Trade lynch (I know he has to agree to a trade though) if it meant keeping Gov and Lever. Other players could play his role on less coin.

The SA boys (brown, laid, smith) you'd think would play for 'unders' to stay in their home state. ( by unders I means 10% or so).

Prestia?

Did you mean Adams?

Prestia?

Did you mean Adams?

Maybe he categorises Richmond as a "sh*t" team?
Yes, I mean Richmond is a perennially shit team.

I don't think he knows what he means, he keeps changing his argument.
Aaaaand that's what I get for giving you the benefit of the doubt and actually responding to you instead of ignoring you all season like I have been.

You haven't changed. Lesson learned. Back to ignoring you. Enjoy the rest of the season.

Might have more to do with paying overs on longer deals to guys who we should have let go.

Would be such a huge leap forward for the club if we could re-sign both Lever and McGovern.

The Geelong/Hawthorn dynasties were built on initial success with players then being prepared to take slightly under market rates. Allowed them to keep most of their best players AND add recruits to the mix.

We haven't had that success to tie people to the club so are left paying full price. This year though we are pushing for top two so it's as close as we've been for a while. If we have to keep paying slightly overs to retain interstaters AND slightly overs because there aren't the off-field $$$ opportunities here AND slightly overs because we're not winning heaps of finals then we're going to forever be losing key players.

Will they commit to the 'promise' of success?

I take your point but Jenkins stayed for a lot less than 700k

I suppose one hope is that we went through the same "Crows are lowballing" stuff with both Jenkins and Lynch and both those deals got done towards the end of the year.
I wonder if there is really any truth behind these low balling rumours.

None of our resignings ever seem unders.

It looks like Reid starts low and works his way up, at least on our bigger deals whereas others may find a common ground immediately and work around from there.

Hartigan, Brown, Eddie and Tex were all done with a minimal of fuss and Hartigan did have a bigger offer to go back home, so it might just be he's fairly easier to deal with on smaller deals, but tries to get the best result he can on the bigger ones (though I'd say he failed on JJ's 5 year deal there).

The JJ one is an interesting one.

If he went elsewhere on a 5 year deal I think the supporter base would have gone nuts and we'd have threads about it. Where we happy 3?

Its a better deal than Mackay for 4 years. But was is similar tp Talia?

Just on Reid - I guess stepping into the role he's hamstrung to a degree initially. He inherits a bunch of contracts that still have 1, 2, 3 years to run. Dollars tied up, players locked away. It will take a few seasons before he's able to put his stamp on the structure of our list and the payments.

A $2m cap increase, with our contracts fixed gives plenty of room to get deals done.

Just watched the 30 from 30 on Shaq and Hardaway. Shaq openly admitted it was ego that got in the way when money was flashed around. He and Penny both felt there was 3-4 titles to be had if Shaq stayed at Orlando.

Lever and McGovern are our bookends and are vital to any flag tilt/s. Lets hope ego doesnt get in the way

It's not really an increase though if everyone else gets it too
