Geelong - are they the AFL superpower and how can they be stopped?

Premierships during the National Era

West Coast = 3, Geelong = 3, Sydney = 3

Hawthorn = 5 :)

Why do you say our luck will run out? What luck? How is being a well ran club lucky?
Strange post.

Being lucky with a playing list and being a well run club are not correlated. You can be a well run club that performs poorly on the field (a la Richmond). Eventually there will come a time when all the pieces on the field won't connect and Geelong will find themselves in the bottom 4, be it due to form, ageing list or whatever. It might not necessitate an entire club rebuild but certainly a playing list rebuild. It's just the natural evolution of the AFL.

Geelong haven't finished in the bottom four since 1983. That's pretty long lasting luck.

True. And there are some clubs whose administrations often find themselves bottom 4, so well run clubs are unlikely to find themselves there (tanking aside, which I still suspect my club of doing in 2005)

Don't straw-man my argument, I haven't been saying that Geelong have been lucky with their playing list since 1983.

Geelong has a lot of things going for them that I think their supporters take for granted, stuff other clubs struggle with. Geelong have the benefit of being a 1 town, 1 team in a footballing state - so memberships, sponsors and game attendance will never be a problem, hence why they're a well run club.

Geelong would still be a well run club today even if you didn't pick up Dangerfield in 2015. Would you be performing as well on field? Probably not.

I'll take it back even further, Geelong would probably still be a well run club had you decided to sack Bomber Thompson at the end of 2006. Would you have won those flags without him though? Probably not.

Just because that Geelong are well run club does not make them immune to eventual poor on field performance. Even if the club doesn't finish bottom 4 eventually, it will still have to go through a quasi-rebuild phase, it happens with literally every AFL team.

Will be top of the ladder next week. Only going to get significantly stronger from here. Superpower confirmed.

Did I say I was using it against you? Effectively you got salary cap relief and can pick him up for cheap as a 34 yr old whose output will still give more bang for your buck relative to (what I am guessing) would be average player wage.

Oh and you got much better pick compensation compared to when we lost our generational player too, if you really want to go down that road.
I don't understand how they'll fit Gary in next year? Will he play across half forward?

That was 2015 where they missed finals. Then got danger and some handy role players as well.

Home & away superpower for sure.
Come September time and it's a whole nother story without Scarlett, Ottens, Ling, Chapman, Corey, Mooney orchestrating things.

I'd say they'd have to do a lot wrong not to win the flag. Adelaide looked good last night but Melbourne are campaigners. I am pretty convinced on them or Sydney for the cup.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't make the GF to be honest. Obviously depends on how other teams are going + injuries + where teams finish on the ladder.

My main worry is Sydney, they are our bogey team. Last year we kept on losing against teams outside the top 8, and we kept on winning against teams in the top 8, the only team we didn't beat in the top 8 was Sydney, they were way too good for us at Geelong during Home & Away, then in the Prelim absolutely dominated us, so I'm very intrigued to see how we play against them towards the end of this season at Geelong if anything has improved for us vs them. Also Giants are still a worry for mine depending on their injuries and if guys like Deledio & Coniglio can return.

Both Adelaide & Port Adelaide are a chance as well if either of them finish Top 2, have both the QF & Prelim at Adelaide Oval, then play a Non-VIC team in the Grand Final (to get rid of the MCG advantage of VIC teams) I could definitely see them winning it.

I love this season!

How the **** do we get mentioned in a thread about superpower clubs. We're in our 6th year and removing the training wheels.

Going from last to first in the space of 68 matches, and staying there, has really only been done once before - a hundred years ago.

The AFL has created a monster.

They haven't won anything yet, and are in a small form slump obviously injuries are A big part of it but if your mob can get up on the weekend GWS might even drop out of the 4.

It's evident that they're missing some key players. The Richmond game is massive this weekend. You'd really think they should be winning that, but form isn't great and Richmond won't be a pushover. Far from.

You might not run into them, and even still you might roll them. Cats looking better than last year I think. Tuohy is a great pick up and Taylor just has to stay in defence. Forward line is pretty sound, I reckon you've filled some holes that showed you up in the prelim. You definitely need you 2nd tier midfielders to stand up against the Swans mids though. They have the best middle in the competition.

lol what about Geelong being gifted all those VFL father sons.
Other than Hawkins, all of the F/S's Geelong picked would have been picked around the same point in the draft anyway. Hawkins was a top 5 talent in his draft so we got a big win there.
