Garry Ablett Sr is close to the best player in history, you think his son would have lasted to the 3rd round? Laughable.Yeah you obviously don't know anything about football then, but quality response mate. Glad we had this chat.
having priority access to kids that require a father that played at least 100 games for the club is a bit different to confirmed year on year cola/academies dont you think?Nah BS.

So yeah I see that you know nothing about football OR you only started following post 2007. GAJ didn't show a heap in the Falcons and his first 4 or so years at Geelong were pretty average. When he was drafted he had big wraps because of his name, but was a 3rd or 4th round talent.Garry Ablett Sr is close to the best player in history, you think his son would have lasted to the 3rd round? Yes I'm aware of that and maybe if his name was Garry Smith and nobody knew who his dad was it might have mattered. There is no way that a player with a bloodline like that would get passed over until that late. I guarantee that if Ablett Jr has a son that is a mediocre underage performer there is no way in hell that he would be left in the draft until the 40s. Some club would take a punt far, far higher simply based on his family. So yeah I see that you know nothing about football OR you only started following post 2007. Little idea as usual.Nah BS.
Yep. He was rated around there in pre-draft speculation.Garry Ablett Sr is close to the best player in history, you think his son would have lasted to the 3rd round? Laughable.
There are plenty of examples of sons of great players not even making the cut or going in the rookie draft for example. No AFL team would ever pick a player based on name alone. This is a professional league, not some backyard kick-around.Yes I'm aware of that and maybe if his name was Garry Smith and nobody knew who his dad was it might have mattered. How can they be a "superpower" when they aren't even the best side in the comp?
No he wasn't.
Ablett Junior was highly rated and was never going to go in the 3rd or 4th rounds of the draft

Yes, thanks for posting a thread full of conjecture and hindsight on what may have happened to GAJ if he was drafted by today's rules. You're still completely wrong. Ask anyone who actually supported Geelong at the time and GAJ was not highly rated and as I said, 3rd or 4th round talent. Same as Scarlett. If you actually read past the OP (which is factually incorrect mind you) you'd find quite a number of posters stating he would have gone around pick 30-40 anyway. No he wasn't.

Let's leave it that wayIt's crazy how we get so much heat in the media from the likes of Eddie. Sydney and Hawthorn have also copped their fair share of heat as well. Yet nothing is ever said about Geelong.
Geelong have one of the greatest disadvantages in world sport in only having a third of their games not in their opposition's home city. 7 home vs 15 away. Aren't going to find much greater disadvantages out there.Don't straw-man my argument, I haven't been saying that Geelong have been lucky with their playing list since 1983.
Geelong has a lot of things going for them that I think their supporters take for granted, stuff other clubs struggle with. Geelong have the benefit of being a 1 town, 1 team in a footballing state - so memberships, sponsors and game attendance will never be a problem, hence why they're a well run club.
Geelong would still be a well run club today even if you didn't pick up Dangerfield in 2015. Would you be performing as well on field? Probably not.
I'll take it back even further, Geelong would probably still be a well run club had you decided to sack Bomber Thompson at the end of 2006. Would you have won those flags without him though? Probably not.
Just because that Geelong are well run club does not make them immune to eventual poor on field performance. Even if the club doesn't finish bottom 4 eventually, it will still have to go through a quasi-rebuild phase, it happens with literally every AFL team.
So where do you think Nathan ablett would be picked? Do you get how genetics work?Garry Ablett Sr is close to the best player in history, you think his son would have lasted to the 3rd round? Laughable.

Yep it played a role. But less of a role then the fact we hadn't had a top 5 draft pick since 1995. Whilst saints, pies, hawks, dogs were not only getting top five picks but priority picks in the top five as well geelong had not one single one.Very happy to finally see a grounded response from a cats supporter.
Of course the old F/S rule played a significant role in Geelongs triple flags era.
Denying it is akin to a North fan dismissing the 10 year rule, or the Longmire/Carey/Sydney trades as a major factor of our flags, or Hawks fans denying tanking had some input for their recent flags.

A thread from 2013 is somehow proof of how recruiters saw 18 year old players 13 years prior?
Ok....
I was a team-mate of GAJ for a time, an opponent at others, he wasn't rated higher than a mid to late second rounder.
Geelong also have a fortress of a home ground which other clubs envy playing at, similar to Carlton back in the day when Princes Park was the number 3 ground.Lots of talk about AFL equalisation methods finally working this year with lots of teams so close on the ladder, and no dominant teams or basketcase teams in the league.
I don't think there's any basketcase teams this year and Brisbane would beat any wooden spooner from recent years gone by. However one club stands out for me as being a tier above the rest and that's Geelong.
Carlton were a superpower back in the 70s and 80s and the modern day Geelong remind me of them in many ways. Bankrolled by heaps of billionaires. Arrogance from top to bottom with famous quotes like "we never rebuild" from club heirarchy.
Carlton were known for bringing in high profile recruits back in their day by opening up the chequebook. Geelong are much the same today with chequebook recruiting of their own.
Ironic how the wheel turns over time. Geelong were once known as a harmless vanilla club who were a second team for many people. This is exactly what Carlton are in today's game.
Meanwhile Carlton were once the most hated and envied club in the game. Today the most hated and envied club would be Geelong.
Do you agree that Geelong are the modern day AFL superpower?
I Can only assume you're an elias and don't actually barrack for Geelong, because if you did you would know, when drafted, Gaz was the equivalent of a 3rd/4th rounder and their was serious questions if he had the right work rate to make it.you were a teammate of GAJ, lol, Crikey some of you fools are beyond fixable
And yes, Ablett would have gone in the 2nd round, certainly not the 3rd or 4th rounds like idiots on here are suggesting
