Please. before anyone else suggests that Boekhorst could be traded for Balic or any other player, consider the following. Blaine thinks he is being tagged by his own shadow, can not get a game in a side that has injuries and sits 2nd last in the competition. He is a WAFL/VFL player at best, always was, always will be

As for Balic, he is not worth a pick inside a 4th rounder

There's been a few people who have been saying this for a while and they've been howled down.

SOS really is very pretty niaive when it comes to trading.

GWS were in a tight spot and needed list spots for Deledio etc and again we did them favours by taking Palmer.

We didn't need to lose Tuohy to engineer the Marchbank trade - and we certainly could have used Tuohy last night.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Tuohy was surplus to our needs and still had currency while being 27yo with 4 years of serviceable footy left.

Marchbank will be key part of our back 6 for the next 10-12 years.

Yeah, we could have used Tuohy last night but what difference would it have made?

In 4 years time when Tuohy has retired and Marchbank is a 24 year old All Australian defender in a successful Carlton side, no-one will give a stuff that Tuohy might have made us slightly more competitive a few years earlier.

Certainly won't get anything for Boek. A 4th for Balic seems fair. We might even get him for nothing basically since he's having 'issues' and not playing.

This has become an issue in recent years. We cannot seem to finish off a season on a strong note and carry momentum into the next year.
It affects memberships as well.
I am glad we signed up most of our young players a couple of months ago when we were going a lot better.
It really is deflating for us supporters too.
It's what happens when you have a bunch of kids limited depth and injuries. To be expected really.

You've missed the point.

SOS could have (and should have) done the Marchbank deal without having to ditch Tuohy.

GWS needed list spots, we could have played hardball and not taken Palmer.

Negotiations aren't simple, they're complex - it isn't about playing hardball, it's about what cards you want to get, what cards you hold and when you play them.

Trade was done in the last 30 mins of trade week, the door was nearly closed. And GWS wanted Marchbank or our pick 5. We got Marchbank and kept 5.
Yes, GWS were shortening their lists, but there was no pressure on GWS with Marchbank. List shortening continued after trade week.
Tuohy also wanted to go, had a better deal with the Cats.

SOS ain't a push over. Look at Gibbs and Adelaide.

It certainly was an odd trade in isolation. I'm assuming GWS demanded a first round pick or no deal.

What I find interesting with Marchbank is he plays in what I think is Weitering's best position.

I think you are missing the point. We didn't need Tuohy. SOS low balled him so he would take the Cats offer. We've got countless others that can play half back.

Palmer being on the list is not taking the place of a future Chris Judd, its more likely preventing DVR or Tutt from an extra year.

GWS needed a first Rd pick to accommodate Richmond in the Deledio trade and salary cap room to fit him in, and we provided both by giving them Geelong's 2018 first and taking Palmers salary off their books.

You claimed SOS is naive in trading.

He is in no way naive, and is perhaps the most cunning negotiator of all the list managers. He has realised that picks and players aren't the only currency available in trading. List spots and salary cap room are the 2 commodities that we currently have in abundance and he is using them to our advantage to secure high end young talent.

You need to look at the big picture.

With the number of players we could delist, I'd be very open to trading pick 1 or 2 to the saints for 8 & 9 or whatever it ends up. If the recruiters think we can get two really good players that suit our needs in the top ten, then why wouldn't we? It's no secret we need more quality youth. Use the opportunities that present themselves to do that.

Naive indeed.

The guy turned Tom Bell and a 2nd round pick into Charlie Curnow.

Read that again.

He knows how to trade and manage lists.

Yarran into Cunningham
Henderson into Mckay
This years 2nd rounder into Williamson, Macreadie and Kerr
Menzel into plowman, kerridge, lamb sumner and Phillips.
Sos does alright

I actually agree with this but we can never really know because no one knows what Pickett was worth in the trade. He was a former pick 4? So maybe he actually was the reason we couldn't get a better deal on Marchbank

He is a top 6-7 player for us. We do need him and he has been a big loss. I still think we done the right thing but

I'm not saying he's not good player. He was a great servant of our club and a good bloke too. But he's not a Mid that we have a shortage of and he's not a Forward that we are struggling for (although some are developing nicely). He's a mid sized defender & we've got Doc, Plowman, Marchbank and getting games into Williamson.
He is a loss but I don't think "we need him".

How? By giving up pick 6?
This is what some people are overlooking. Effectively we traded a 27 year old HBF & a 2nd round draft pick for SPS, Marchbank & Pickett, all of them under 21 & 1st round draft picks. We wouldn't have got the deal over the line otherwise.

He once turned water into wine, pretty sure.
