McKenna is our most important signing...and that is not meant to be an insult to Zaharakis.

McKenna is absolutely crucial to what we do, how we play, and our future. Even if his asking price is more than we expected/hoped for, I'll be disappointed if we either don't have the money, or don't fork out the money to keep him. He is not a guy you let walk.

Have spent some time off BigFooty and had time to think that perhaps our inside midfield stocks are not as poor as required. What we do lack is that run from defence (no, am not advocating a Jake Lever deal). If the reports that Connor McKenna wants to depart, we are very shallow in this area. The end goal is to have Andy McGrath move up the ground, Gleeson is only ok by foot and that is about all in the senior side at the moment (bar the man in question - Connor McKenna).

Not suggesting we move heaven and earth to get in another half back flanker with elite speed/skills but it is certainly an area of concern for me. With so much thinking time, the man to go after should be D_P_S's man, Hunter Clark (Dandenong Stingrays). If he could come on sooner rather than later and be an AFL player by year 1 - 2, it would allow us more time to draft/develop guys to replace he when he should eventually move further up the ground.

Obviously we have other pressing needs but the more you look at the evidence, the more it makes sense for us to take Hunter Clark.

Me and mike have been saying it for months, welcome back well done on catching up - time well spent.

We should package up the FA compo pick we get for Zaharakis and the likely second rounder for McKenna and trade in an established KPF (casboult or Patton??) so we can put Hooker back in defence where he belongs and so Joe can play more time in the ruck (more running goals from the arc). Thoughts??? Get it done dodo

So essentially - Zaharakis and McKenna for Casboult?

Don't mind it.

A good mid (Zaharakis) and a gun half back (McKenna) for a 27 year old mediocre at best key forward like Casboult who has only ever kicked more than 30 goals in a season once (this year)? Yeah no thanks.

As for Patton he re-signed with GWS back in February and isn't out of contract again until 2020. No chance of securing him unfortunately. As Teflon said, better to wait for Lynch next year and make a big play for him.

JJ just signed for 550k~

McKenna would be in the 250k ballpark and our original offer would be closer to 150k - it'll get done.

I would have been thinking Brisbanes offer would be in the 350+ range. I expect him to be one of the premier half backs within a few years, so I'd be more than happy to pay it.

For run off half back we could look at Ed Richards later in the draft. Clark will be like Heppell he won't last long at half back. He may even start his career forward and take Laverdes spot to allow him to go into the middle.

Probably, the Irish lads aren't complete campaigners come contract time - they are generally very loyal to the club that picked them up, don't understand the talk that they aren't. More likely it's loyalty to their teammates who welcome them to a foreign country, but he will take unders to stay - would just want something a little closer to that mark.

I'm not convinced he will take under.

You have to remember the majority of his time with us so far has been as a rookie on low wages. He would know how important he is to the side and the offers from other sides would be quite healthy I believe.

He has tajen a massive step up this year in output and I think he will go up another level next year. He deserves to be paid and I think they will have to stump up the market value.

If the offer is anywhere near 350k he will stay for less. Would be surprised if he didn't and we hadn't stressed his importance and what it would mean to be an Irish premiership player for Essendon.

Brisbane are a young side so they could afford to pay more than 350k. The average salary is 370k and he's shown more than enough to take a chance on.

The interesting part about these negotiations for me is have they got somebody lined up already and can't afford to pay McKenna and Zaka to much or have we got no money at all.

I was told that we didn't have enough for a Martin but we may have enough for a Lever. I wouldn't want to lose McKenna though just to get Lever.

I think it's more likely that we want a big name or 2 plus the McGrath camp is holding out so we hadn't given Conor's contract much thought till recently.
I'm pretty sure that they have considered Conor. They don't just plan on the fly.

Doubt we can afford two stars. I would be happy if we got just one target.

It will be more than that.

You were the one that brought it up from memory, but the media profile players get from our club compared to Norf and Brisbane is worth more than the extra 50-100k on its own, and then you throw in strong bonds, moving interstate or to a bottom 2 club from an already promising situation. Unlikely to demand that money, 250-300k for mine.

He's going back to Ireland so his media profile here probably doesn't mean as much.

Media profile is for guys that live here not guys that are on record for saying they want to go home and play gaelic football at some stage.

If Brisbane are truly after him then they could easily offer him 500k. A 21 y.o. guy with his athletic abilities and kicking skills don't grow on trees.

So was Tadhg Kennelly....

I see Kennelly as an argument for my point.. he played out his professional career through to retirement and went back to play Gaelic with his mates after a long career at one club and a premiership.

If that's what McKenna meant, I'm more than happy for him to go back eventually and have absolutely no doubt he will.
