Understood, but I'm interested in his value at the trade table. Knowing what we know (about our list, the draft, available players etc.) what is the single pick in the 2018 draft would you be happy to accept as a straight swap for Brandon Ellis?

Cheers.

Dave P.
I definitely don't want to trade him for a prospective pick as I think our window is now with our elite talent other than dusty (Jack, Rance, Cotch) all being late 20s. We should be attempting to strike now and losing senior players would hurt that. However, if we were able to get a top-5 pick for him in an apparently very strong draft (which is way overs - his value is around 15-20) then we could flip that pick for a stronger player who could aid in our premiership tilt

A players value is governed by a few things other than their ability.
If they want to leave
If the club wants them to leave or needs them to leave (making cap space)
Importance to the club recruiting them and if there are multiple clubs after them.
Depth of the draft you are trading in (whats available for the pick you get or points value for FS)
Probably a few other factors you could go into.

On your question, what is Brandon worth?
Not inside the top 10 but not outside the top 20. He really hasn't lost any value from when he was drafted at 15, so I think this would still be around the mark.

I can't see a reason to let him go just for a pick though, he is the sort of player you would only give up to get in a required player in return (ie kpf)

Dumb question. If you were the list manager, what would you accept as a trade for Brandon Ellis? No player exchange, just draft pick(s).

I'll start - I would take pick #3 or higher. To me, he's *that* valuable at this stage in the development of our team. If we traded him for a pick in the middle of the first round (say #9), I'd be angry with the club. Am I crazy?

Cheers.

He is worth more to us than anyone else. I agree unless we get a top 5 pick it is not worth it for us the way he is playing but no team is going to offer that.

Somewhere between 10-20. He isn't an A grader by any stretch but he is a very good B grader who looks to have got back to his hard running best this year. A side that is on the cusp of finals or looking to take that next step would look at him as a handy inclusion. That being said, Ellis is more value to us than a draft pick in that range. A player drafted in that range averages between 68-105 games per player over 33 drafts. So with no guarantee of getting a successful replacement we're better off keeping him given he is a lock in the 22 at present.

At this stage of our list development we should be looking at keeping the core group together and trading fringe players looking for more opportunity. In saying that you don't trade for the sake of trading still need to get the best possible value in return. At the same time I wouldn't be trading out any picks early in the draft unless we're getting a proven talent back in return. Otherwise you take your picks to the draft and keep bringing in young talent to keep the list turning over and setting up the long term success for the club.

Around pick 15ish... don't think he's worth any lower

ricky nixon must be back on the drugs asked him if we are chasing anyone he replies a new sponsor to help pay dustys cash quite funny but still a bored campaigner

Elaborate

We paid Dusty what we could while keeping future recruitment in mind. Plus, the delistings, the Deledio money, Yarran money.
No doubt it's tight, but I think we have taken into account everything to ensure that if we are in a position to land a big name, we can.

No doubt we've made decisions so as to not compromise our lists future. However, with Grimes*, Houli* and Grigg* becoming FA's at the end of 2018 (As well as Griffo and Conca if they stick around...) coupled with the fact Tom Lynch will very likely command 1.5m+ x a lot of years, I just can't see us being a realistic chance. To be honest, I can't even see us throwing our hat in the ring once his market value becomes apparent.

Schache seems the most obvious suitor long term if he does indeed still want to go, with maybe a Tippett stop-gap type for 1 or 2 yrs.

*Grimes will likely see a slight pay increase, however I can't see Houli or Grigga receiving more. I imagine they'd be happy being on the same coin under the new salary cap, as opposed to taking less to stick around under the old cap.

Houli turns 30 next year. I think we've all seen over the years that he uses his pace and hard running as his weapons. He looks half a step slower to me this year. He's not tall. I think the end will come very quickly for Bachar :(

Grigg is in the same age bracket as Houli, but he plays a lot taller and a bit more inside. He could play up forward in the last few years of his career and snag 40 goals a season. I think he'll happily roll on with 1 year contracts and reach 200 games for Richmond. This is all on the assumption that he doesn't get killed as our second ruck!

Cheers.

If the opportunity arose what would people think of trading with one of Dogs Dees Eagles or Essendon to trade their first 2 picks for our first 2 picks.

That would mean swapping say 15 & 16 for either:

9 & 26
10 & 27
11 & 28
12 & 29

I know some will say it's unfair downgrading their first pick for a lower but on the flip side they upgrade their second. In a shallow draft the ability to get 2 earlier picks back to back might mean getting access to 2 players they really like instead of the one.

For us it might mean getting access to Hayes but it would mean paying a bigger price for Naish as a bid before the second round pick would force us to use that and drop back in the draft.

Saw that, had a little chuckle.....

Grigg and Houli likely less coin , when both >30y , demand for their services not high , cotch, and Jack too will be on lesser contracts next time around . Rance may well command a hefty one again . Our tpp will remain a balanced one

Love to get him. Stack the list with quality. We must be able to get him at the right price.
