I don't think they are anywhere near winning a flag. They have really good players but don't think they have a really good team.

Same was, would've been, said about Richmond before the weekend. Things change quickly.

They (ie the Giants), more than most, have the talent and the tools to give it a shake.

Works pretty well for Sydney.......

They are not reliant on top ups at all...the only significant moves they made were Tippett & Buddy 4 years ago.

Their success is built on culture and developing players...they had heaps of players who were once rookies in their team on the weekend.
And they are still helped by getting Mills and Heeney ;)

St Kilda would have to extremely excited about pick 3 to effectively sacrifice pick 8 to move up from pick 7 to 3. Just absolutely no chance, a ridiculous fantasy imo.

I understand where you are coming from with regards to the points system, but in my opinion the clubs do use it as a rough guide. We traded pick 20 & 21 for pick 10 in the 2015 draft, in my mind that trade looked quite equal (though it ended up being seriously good for us with Curnow being available). the points system showed that the trade was in fact in favour of the dogs and we upgraded our future 4th round pick to a third round pick accordingly.

No doubt it will change every year depending on what's available but those suggesting it can be used as a rough guide are not too far off the mark.

Saints have plenty of MIDS.

Reiwoldt retired.

McCartin has not developed- diabetes and concussion issues.

Were keen on Dusty - didn't get him.

Were keen on Kelly - won't get him.

Why wouldn't they crawl over hot coals to get the best forward/mid in the draft?

Lions and GC focussing on country boys- so Raynor slides to pick 3?

Maybe they would give up 7 & 8 for pick 3.

The only predictable fact of the draft?

Unpredicted trades will happen.

GWS's problem is their coach - not their players.

edit: and I think they will smash WC

Maybe right, but I think people don't recognise that for all the talent they have there are still glaring deficiencies.

Big key backs, quick selfless small forwards and not a single player capable of playing a shutdown role in the midfield.

If I was Leon Cameron I'd trade one of Lobbe/Cameron/Patton and take those very good picks and try to fill some deficiencies in the list

GWS have not really had to shutdown anyone to play their best...I think the only challenge they have is to understand and adjust to the fact that in finals every side lifts intensity significantly as far as contested football goes- they need lift their intensity as a team and stop relying on individual class acts - the talent is there all over the park...agree their midfield hasnt defended very well or won the contested ball as easy as they are used to - they can do it if they want it bad enough

people pretty quick to seemingly forget the injury list GWS dealt with all year. They've really had no continuity all year

anyway - J Brown believes Kelly will re-sign with the Giants for 2 years (On the Couch)

Brown said Kelly was going to Carlton ("lock it in Gerard") on the couch a couple months back...... hard to take seriously.

It's a mindset though, I'm sure they all think they are an awesome midfield unit but they are all ball hunters 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

They brought in DeBoer onto their list, not to be a goalkicker but to have a more defensive mindset...problem is up forward they're all ball hunters 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

DeBoer is slow though

They don't pay anywhere near enough attention to the defensive side of the game.

Hypothetical, but An Ed Curnow type in that midfield would be enormous. Defensive is first mindset then work hard to get ball

Coniglio is an excellent shut down player- who can also find the ball himself.

Who knows what to believe anymore...

But him saying that is in line with what most others are saying including barrass...HOWEVER the fact he has put off the contract till the end of the year and i think there's a good chance GWS and Kelly's manager have simply told other clubs and media personalities that to lower the distraction.

MS3 just earlier said Kelly is still undecided.
