Agree mate. If you are a pure outside mid like Gaff is then you want to be pretty damaging. Gaff's skills are neat but nowhere near elite. He's not creative & as you mentioned he doesn't hit the scoreboard. I don't think you could find a more vanilla footballer.

Now that I've given Gaff a whack I will say that he certainly has his positives. He's a genuine run & carry player that basically plays the Nick Riewoldt role but as a small mid. He doesn't provide a marking target but he does find space. He's basically the link between half back & half forward - which Roo did for us.

I'm not a massive Gaff fan but I do see a requirement for his type. I'd give pick 8 up for him but nothing more. But can certainly see an argument against that. Include Acres? Yea same mate I'd vomit.

Remember when he first started Gaff ripped us to shreds at Etihad and Ross Lyon said he'd be the best player in the comp in a few years, then he said Dale Thomas was the best in the comp. Had some bad calls old Rossy.

But only twice a game. He's not that good, he's like an flashier Minchington who probably never transitions to the midfield due to his bulk. Mc cartin would probably cost a late first early second if a club wanted him, he would get that on potential not output. I would rather take our picks to the draft. Patricia does nothing to suggest at this point he will make it to an elite player. If you said Oliver I'd take notice, he will be a special player.

I cant take you seriously comparing him to Minch.

Geez that trade radio talk from Stringer about he "doesn't know what he did" to get kicked out of the club is massive alarm bells.

The dogs aren't doing something as drastic as kicking out their most talented youngster who is contracted without having made it very clear why.

"I don't know the exact details on why. I haven't spoken to Bevo. I've spoken to (list manager) Jason McCartney about those type of things," Stringer said."

Stringer said he saw no point in discussing his situation further with Beveridge.

"It's past that point now. It's sort of just one of those things. I've dealt with Jase (McCartney), I've been talking to Jase, so I'm pretty confident and comfortable with where things are at now," Stringer said.

The guy is 'comfortable' with being kicked out of the club he 'loves' even though he doesn't know why it's happening.

C'mon Rors , explain to everyone why Stringers head is even more eff'ed than Jaegers knees.

Ha! Indeed. He made many poor recruiting decisions as well. Schneider & Dempster early on in the piece the only decent trades in (although Gardiner had a very good 09).

Thomas was a top 20 player in the comp before he busted his foot imo and gaff would be spoken about a lot more if he played in vic

I'm absolutely not an ITK but I have heard that Balic and Carlton have had some positive discussions already. Likely not the only club though.

I also believe Stringer would be a good acquisition. This situation seems a massive wake-up call, and a fresh perspective with a fresh club could bring his best back out. Keen.

I couldn't agree more.

I can't take you seriously when you offer draft suggestions. Two top 10 picks for a B grade player that isn't even close to what we need when you have said no more B graders. Thank god they haven't made you a recruiter. We miss out on elite players so we burn our picks on someone that doesn't suit our needs but has a bit of potential.

Although seeking A grade talent in the midfield is a priority, would Devon Smith fill a void as quality talent up forward? Whilst not a priority, he would make our team better in the small forward position (Lonie, Minch, Long and Weller on recent form). Rumoured to be linked to Geelong but it's a rumour like many others.

Yeah I certainly wouldn't be upset if we got Gaff, he's good. But very meh, and don't think he would improve us much as a team if at all. Which is why I'm against trading for him due to the cost.

Sinclair's 20 disposals a game on the wing is more damaging than Gaff's 30 disposals a game on the wing. Despite having the ball 10 less times per game Sincs averages more goals/goal assists/score involvements than Gaff, and is a much better ball user, whilst being a more rounded player with regards to his inside game.

Let's keep developing #35 in that spot instead, because he's going to be an A grader and I've been saying that since 2015.

I would probably prefer an outside mid. He wouldn't really suit our needs of a mobile tall defender our outside run and pace. He's a good player though. Back Lonie or Mav to take that spot maybe Armo even if we don't get a trade for him.

Petracca is a beast and if we picked him in the draft we would raving about his potential. Looking back at that years draft if we had picks 1 and 7,8 (hypothetical) we would have tried to trade 7,8 up to 2 and picked both Mccartin and Petracca. Petracca could possibly be as good as danger and dusty. Thats how highly I rate him. 7,8could be good players in this draft where as we know Traccs is going to be a beast in our mid
At that point is rather give 7 and 8 to gold coast for 2 a second and fiorini and draft rayner. I think similar players and we don't help Melbourne by giving them two top tens for lever.

2003 we won 11 games with a 13 players under 24 such as Roo, Lenny, Dal (8 gams), Ball (16 games with groin issues) Goddard, Koschitzke, X Clarke, Milney (14 games), Goose Maguire, Blake, Heath Black, Baker, Joey (12 gms)..
We added some grunt through picking up Guerra, but had players like Dal, Lenny, Ball, Roo, etc, who were able to develop & improve putting us within a kick of the GF in 04.. Natural development is understated by many on this forum, but when you've followed the game for many years your able to be patient. And when you see that there's 15-20 players with scope for upside such as our list, there's a belief that anything is possible in a new season.

Sure, "scope for upside" I agree with. And we all have to make our own judgements on how likely it is that the guys on our list in 2018 will improve. But I'm not sure they compare. Selected highlights of our 2004 list:

277 games: Harvey (32 years old, dual Brownlow Medallist)
179 games: Jones (27 years old, got 11 Brownlow votes that year)
168 games: Gehrig (28 years old, kicked 100 goals that year)
148 games: Thompson (31 years old, very solid player)
137 games: Hudghton (27 years old, very solid player)
93 games: Hayes (24 years old, got 10 Brownlow votes that year)
65 games: Guerra (21 years old, kicked 29 goals that year)
52 games: Milne (24 years old, kicked 46 goals that year)
50 games: Riewoldt (21 years old, kicked 67 goals and got 17 Brownlow votes that year)
26 games: Dal Santo (20 years old, got 12 Brownlow votes that year)
16 games: Ball (19 years old, got 8 Brownlow votes that year)

Also playing 18+ games: Hamill, Black, Powell, Voss, Baker, Penny, Blake, X Clarke, Knobel, Goddard.

In Harvey+Hamill+Jones+Gehrig+Thompson+Hudghton+Powell there's a pretty solid experienced core, including a dual Brownlow Medallist and a Coleman Medallist. Then coming through below there are all-time greats of the club including Hayes, Milne, Riewoldt, Dal Santo, and Goddard.

Do we have that in 2018? Make your own judgement. I reckon not.

Its called risk because he has so much potential. Anyway its a bullshit conversation because Melbourne love him. And we do need his type because the game is more and more about forwards who can mark the ball and also go into the middle. You still want 3 tall forwards and 3 tall backs. That's fine If they are close to stars otherwise it went out with milk being home delivered in a horse and cart.

My mum follows Melbourne so I watch them very closely. Well I do but it doesn't matter that my mum follows them.

To me Acres is the guy on our list that is most like him, he has played as a forward mostly but with runs on the ball and gets around the ground. Most on here love Acres but he's still a potential player than a finished article now. I would rather back Blake to be a better player. He's already ahead of Petracca on most stats this year.

I refuse to look at stats when I see both play.

Could Dev Smith be a full time mid?

Baz after the punch = Stringer "being shocked" and "not knowing why he's being traded"

"What did I do?"

His prospects for reform are stuff all if he's in denial about what he's done for it to get to this point.

Fine we will just have to wait and see who ends up better in a few years. Happy to be wrong but as you said I doubt he leaves anyway.

Possibly. In the mid-stacked GWS team, we never got to see this for long periods. Certainly has the attributes to run through the middle and allow Billings to do the same.
