Lol this post reminds me of Kate Winslet in Extras: "You know what you have to do to get a bloody Oscar- play someone in the Holocaust- Oscars coming out their asses. That or play a mental" :D

Another one: Tom Hanks in Philadelphia.

The Falcon & the Snowman
.

Great movie that not enough Aussies have seen or heard of.

2 that come to my mind right away that copped award snubs -

Jake Gyllenhall in NIGHTCRAWLER
Freddie Highmore in BATES MOTEL ( Series )

I think the OP nailed it, F. Murray Abraham delivers one of the greatest I've ever seen. Others:

- George C. Scott in Patton
- Joaquin Phoenix and PSH in The Master
- DDL in There Will Be Blood and Gangs of New York
- Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver, The King of New York and Raging Bull
- Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Ellen Burstyn in Requiem For a Dream
- Mickey Rourke in The Wrester
- Chris Cooper in Adaptation
- Tom Cruise in Magnolia
- Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon and The Godfather I and II
- Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie, Midnight Cowboy and Kramer vs Kramer
- Paul Newman in Hud and Cool Hand Luke
- Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
- Bette Davis in All About Eve
- Roger Livesay in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
- Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James and Manchester By the Sea

Forgetting heaps here I think...

Decent list.
Glad someone mentioned Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke as that is one of the special one from before our times that crossed my mind yesterday.
Dicraprio like Winslet and De Niro is special in so many of them.
Most amazing ones to me and maybe also the most disturbing at same time are De Niro in Taxi Driver and Sheryl Lee in Fire Walk With Me. They played both roles so on the edge and just compelling the whole movie.
