our midfield has struggled the last couple of years primarily through aging and injuryof our top four inner mids of our top 8 overall mids. That is why this draft is important for us in terms of getting at least two inside mids ala Dow, Rayner, Constable first pick, and later picks maybe get one of Ainsworth, Starcevich, Patmore, Shipley. Imop we only have Neil and Fyfe with Mundy not really able to go 4 quarters in that role anymore. Our four outsides are from B Hill, Weller, S Hill , Bennell and Walters and our four insiders at the moment are Neil, Fyfe and Blakely. Losing Balic means we need a replacement and we need another given Fyfe is more ruck roving around the ground (Deluca is a back up only). If we could get two top inside mids Freo will cut loose as it frees up Fyfe and Mundy and feed out to them and the outside mids. Ball delivery into the forward line much quicker and precise than what it has been. In my humble opinion;)
Blakely will be a wonderful clearance player by next year in my view. But, I agree another gun inside mid would be very handy. Timothy Kelly could be a great addition. Doesn't fumble, terrific kick and the best stoppage player outside of the AFL system. The problem is that it seems there are plenty of other teams who have noticed how good he has become with reports both West Coast and Carlton are keen to recruit him with picks before our second pick in the draft which is currently 40 or 41. Perhaps we need to trade to get a pick before West Coast's second. Maybe Crozier and Pick 41 for Melbourne's Pick 29. I genuinely think Kelly will be an instant gun player at AFL level. If we don't recruit a player Id love for Darcy Tucker to spend time playing an inside mid role. Kid is already a unit and looks physically ready to play as a clearance player in my view.

Right, so Melbourne are going to trade Hogan and Watts. Doesn't sound like good list management to me.

As for Wilson, our 2018 2nd will be about right. I imagine that's where Carter will likely receive a bid (in the 20's).

in terms of the 2018 draft if our trading this year is somewhat dependent on planning for next years,
I'm not thinking much further than the three you've mentioned and the fact that 2018 has some high end talls and so I don't want us to be going into next year having traded away any picks.
Best inside mid with 5 then horsetrading and nailing later picks in this draft.
Obviously it's all conditional on what you get in return for your future picks, so as I said it's all pretty rhetorical.
Uncontracted fringe players are all on the block.

Wilson for a 2018 second rounder has zero chance of happening in the real world.

Wilson for a 2018 second rounder has zero chance of happening in the real world.

Only way that happens is dependent on how confident they are on Buntine / A.Kennedy and after assessing Wilson's finals series. Which was okay - otherwise zero chance.

I dont know why a 2018 second doesnt get the job done and it really isnt zero chance. It seems about the mark for a good half back flanker. Before this year he was still in and out of the team. Yes he's good, but he isnt the best in the league and I'd argue not even the best at GWS. Yes, he is contracted but I think the salary issues offset this a bit and wouldnt be surprised if they budgeted for him leaving a while ago when they signed Hopper, Whitfield and Kelly. Time will tell I suppose

If you don't know why a second rounder doesn't get it done you haven't seen him play. Ridiculously underrated on here.

I wouldn't have thought a second rounder for Brad Hill would've got it done last season either, but it did. As i've said previously, similar (same) circumstances; 24 year old contracted WA boy wants to return home for family reasons and is in the best 22 of a top four club.

Not to mention Brad Hill is a far better player than Wilson and wasn't replaceable at the time - like Wilson can be at GWS. No Hartung isn't.

Gold Coast currently have 4 picks in the second round this year. I think we might do pick 40 and our 2018 second rounder for a 2017 second round pick and Matera. Then trade that second round pick for Wilson.
Gee pick 40.... have they ever had to count that high?

If they are into Crozier and Taberner as I expect then our ideal from them might be:

Pick #5, Taberner & Crozier for Pick #9 and pick #11 (Stringer trade to Essendon)

Although it looks good I still hold out hope for Taberner and Crozier too. Big moves do need to be made!

What do we think back 6 would look like (ex Johnson)

Hughes Hamling pearce
Weller Ryan wilson

Our run and distribution looks electric!!!
Hughes Hamling Nyhuis
Ryan A Pearce Wilson

Getting midfield time into Blakely and Weller is a good investment, and is where they belong. Plus Nyhuis is ready, or at least ready enough.
