I've just gone Gold on my second AFL Membership this year. Took me 10 years to get there, first one only took me 8, so I won't be relaxing those anytime soon because of the Priority 1 option on Grand Final tix


I've also got 2 GA H&A Geelong Memberships. I'm thinking of upgrading......any recommendations?

Don't really like going to KP but the social club seems appealing

Bartel was talking about McCarthy today and recommended him for the GC assistant to develop youth. Talked about how easy he explains things, emphasises the basics really well and being clean by hand and foot. We should get him back.

The current SC has some limitations- have to get there when gates open to nab a seat under shelter if it's wet, and it's a mad rush, then some time to kill til the game starts. LOTI is handy. Toilets and meals up there in the SC are not great yet. We are like you, Melbourne based, in fact 25 km east, so it's a big commitment getting to a Fri pm game on time.

I am really interested in your anecdotal comparison of how the GFC/Monetary Policy is like the Geelong Football Clubs recruiting strategy...

Could you please elaborate on this? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I note that the GFC was not really about printing extra banknotes, but rather about subprime lending comprising of compiled mortgages that were rated as AAA, but were really far riskier. I would like to see how this matches the GFC recruiting plan to remain competitive.

After a little bit of thought - I'm going to help you with this one...

If you said that Adelaide's GF performance (or substitute Geelong's final's performances)was actually akin to the Global Financial Crisis, then I'd say you've got a point.

The similarity is about confidence.

Both situations are the lending and borrowing market (substitute fans) having confidence in something that when you really analyse it, turns out that it isn't all that good. And when people start questioning it, it actually falls apart. For the GFC it was loans on houses that were empty and likely to create borrowers defaulting. For the football clubs it was about not having real heart to go and grab a victory and play to your absolute potential.

The same home ground we won every single final at in 2007, 2009, and 2011. Including three wins over Collingwood who play their home games there. Must have missed all the complaints about it at the time.

Even more embarrassing than the team's efforts against Richmond and Adelaide has been the pissing and moaning by supporters about things that had no bearing on the result. Just shows an unwillingness to face reality. Pathetic.

Both are bad, I still find the team's efforts way more pathetic though.

And the team's efforts on the field are also the only one of these two factors that affects our finishing position at the end of each season. There is no ladder for 'most reasonable supporter base in the AFL'.

And, even if there was, we wouldn't be that close to the bottom. Particularly if you take the long view and correct for the sense of entitlement that has infected a part of our supporter base since the glory days of '07-'11.

Apart from that, Cats supporters have generally been a pretty sober-minded bunch in my view.

I guess that's what 44 years of never ascending the mountain will do for you.

A great atmosphere, but I could see very little being built so low to the ground in the standing area.

And i have to say it was scary - how tightly the spectators were packed in - and i can understand how that Soccer tradgedy occurred - Hillsborough or whatever it was - involving Liverpool ithink

If at Geelong that day - there was wire barracades at the fence( so people couldnt get on the ground ) like at the English soccer -then not many more spectators had to be let in at Geel that day for the same thing to occur - because you literally could not move

I recall the weekend when Collingwood and Hawthorn played in front of just under 93,000. There were reports of men urinating in the empty beer cans because the crowd was too big and getting to the toilets was too difficult.
They set a limit on the crowd at Waverley after that event.

I was at the 1980 grand final and there was 113,461 there. When I went to take a slash the toilets were so crowded that blokes just turned on the taps in hand basins and relieved themselves there. That was back in the days when you could take in as much grog as you liked. I stood on my esky to see.
You can see why hand basins are so high now at Kardinia park, the G and Jihad.
Anyway, what does this have to do with Chris Scott's coaching?

It is going to be interesting. If I was Dean Cox, I would really think about joining the Sydney Swans coaching staff to develop my coaching career.

I really want Dean Cox at Geelong. But, if you really look at it, is Chris Scott a good coach when 80% of his playing list do not want to play for him?

The second question is any prospective recruit who wants to switch clubs and any aspiring assistant coach would do his research into Geelong. They would realise that since 2012 Geelong under Chris Scott have miserably failed in training up the Geelong players' skill level to withstand the September and big game heat and when you recruit for the now, any head coach or football department would make sure that all bases are covered in terms of player development and training up the players' skill levels. This means improving any weaknesses in Dangerfield's game or Selwood's game by an extra 5 to 10 per cent.

The third question is whether the club's hierachy is making excuses for finishing in the top 2 and failing to make the Grand Final? There are no excuses in elite sport. I had a laugh and I was about to throw up when I head Colin Carter's speech at the Best and Fairest. He reminds me of the late Ron Hovey.

There are no points for 2nd to 18th place!!

If there is this fractured relationship between Scott and some of the players - why then did Geel have such a fantastic big finals win against the Swans ?

As for Dean Cox - i read during the week that Coxy wants to be a Senior Coach one day - thats why he is leaving the Eagles - wants outside experience etc

Thus given that - i think he should choose Geel ( Longmire - got another 4 years to go - and he is rock solid at Moore Park) . Where as C Scott ( and i think he deserved his extension ) is contacted for just another 2 years - that would be 9 years in total - no flag in next 2 years - Cats might look elsewhere - if Coxy has impressed in those 2 years - he would be in the box seat for the Geel job

Cox sounds like he is pretty street smart - when Vardy and Petrie in combo basically nullified Ryder in that epic final - Vardy on the radio said the instructions he got from Cox - was to make it as messy as possible - i thought that was very smart coaching - he knew they were both miles short of Ryder in class and talent - and they basically just did as Cox said - and frustrated Ryder right out of the game .
