Jake Niall just reported some interesting stuff on 'AFL Tonight' on Foxtel.

Geelong were only prepared to offer pick 51 to Melbourne for Watts. Hence, Stephen Wells' comments that they didn't bother wasting their time moving much further with it. Said that Melbourne are looking for a pick in the 20s for Watts, whilst Port have pick 29 (might be 30 after compo pick additions) so Port are in front for Watts. Said not to rule Geelong out completely yet because their best offer will depend on what compo pick they get for Motlop. Claimed that Motlop pick will be roughly pick 34 but if the Crows offer is big enough (this was speculation) that they could get a end of 1st round comp pick which would be a pick in the late teens early 20s.

Didn't even mention Sydney as being in the race so it certainly seems like the race for Jack is down to two.

Why does Melbourne want to get rid of watts. He's under contract. When we tried with hamish we didn't just want to give him away for nothing.

You'd think the difference between the contracts offered is quite significant if Motlop and his management really want us to match it.

If I've read ZWs posts correctly over the journey our offer was made very early - well before he lit up in the finals. So it's probably quite modest.
Based on the info tonight I'm guessing we haven't needed to get in a bidding war, just sit back and wait to hear what others are offering - and how close we need to be to get it done.

I think we will get Motlop, but wont get watts. Watts really needs to commit to us before we, act on mots to prevent the cats getting the compo pick to use. He isn't doing that. Pretty clear we will give up and make sure we don't miss out on motlop. Maybe will go for obrien next with the Impey deal instead

You don't get the compo pick until FA closes so you can trade it next week but not this week.

They can't match. They need some cap space for Ablett. They have also brought in quite a few players on good coin recently. Motlop going helps them.

I'm guessing you can trade them next week when the free agency period finishes and trade week continues

Dixon, Hoff & Watts forward line with 1 of them (Not Dixon) roaming around sometimes sounds fine to me.

Sounds good because Westhoff can certainly go to a wing and it sounds like Watts also can play further up. It means flexibility in our forward half. If we cop a short defence wheel out the three talls to take advantage - if they drop an extra tall back, Westhoff swings to a wing and one of Gray/Wingard/Rockliff slides forward for a while.

I might be wrong but I think the compo they get will play a part. If the crows have offered the supposed sum they have they will get a higher compo pick, end of first round maybe. If he chooses us for a lower $$$ the compo pick might be end of second round where they will consider matching as they get less in return.

Not sure if that's right but that's the rough idea I got out of it...

You've always been able to trade compo picks. They aren't finalised until after the free agency period finishes.
