Try to predict Freos left-field drafting:

Brayshaw/Raynor/LDU - pick 2
Allen/Higgins/Brander - pick 5

Can hear the melts about Allen already. He’s not 195cm, but he’s 193cm with really long arms - so that’ll do for me! He’s the best forward in the draft. Take him and know he’s as good as any young forward going around that we’ll have access to. Use 2018 first on best available mid, because they’ll be better than any mid at pick 5 this year.

We won't take Allen at 5 (as much as I like him). It is really hard to know who we will draft since Freo treat this info like the Nuclear Codes.

If we don't take Rayner at 2 (if available) then I will go into nuclear meltdown. This kid is too ****ing good.

Seen highlight videos of a few players, but Rayner is the clear standout. Looks like an absolute beast. Want. Badly.

Missed a fair few targets by foot in that package. Maybe I am just being greedy but I expect a fair bit from a pick 2.
The kid hunts the ball and has a big rig. A lot to work with. Typical big bodied inside mid that RTB loves. Freo' is the club where this type of player can really shine.

I have no doubt they are all better than I am giving them credit for but I am having trouble getting excited by the pure mid guys. Hence my penchant for the 3 mid/forwards.

Same. They just seem so average to me. Maybe I am just blinded by shiny things, but watching footage of LDU/Dow/Cerra versus Rayner/Stephenson/Fogarty, and the latter trio look so much superior to my eyes.

I will concede that a no-nonsense mid is maybe a good idea for our list. I just find it hard to pass on a potential Martin or Bont for a potential Sheed.

Would love a mid that can replace Mundys role and do what Weller was being moulded to do, allowing him to move forward and extend his career post this next one.

Who fits that bill?

You can't act defeatist and assume that Metro boys will go home. That is loser talk.

4 of the last 8 Vic Metro kids we have drafted have gone home, counting Balic and Crozier this year. Call it 3/8 because Crozier stayed 6 years.

That's still a really poor strike rate.

Sure if the Vic Metro kid is a class above the next guy in line then you have to roll the dice. But if it's 6 of one half a dozen of the other, then history suggests that taking the other guy seems like the smart play.

If the 'go home' factor is something we can't rule out entirely, I'd rather we go bigger bodied players than bean stalks. At least with Rayner, LDU and Fogarty they look big enough to contribute from round 1. We might as well get 3 years of solid contribution before they fly back home. Plus the more impact they have quickly the better our chances of climbing the ladder and contending again (which might give the added incentive for them to stay put!). Dow and Stephenson look like they need a few more years development in the gym...

Rayner looks like the balanced inside outside player that kicks goals that would perfectly complement the rest of the midfield. LDU seems to have fantastic vision but may struggle to get in the team with Fyfe and Neale in. The videos of Stephenson I watched his disposal by hand and foot was terrible, but maybe they were bad games.

Don't mind the idea of Fogarty either, seems like he could be a really tough strong half forward early on.

If we take the ruckman Hayes I will be pretty disappointed because we already have a young gun in that position.

I would like a focus to be on scoreboard potential. We do have midfielders who roll back quite well, but it is in attack that we struggle. How would the top 7 rate in that regard???

Stephenson
Fogarty
Raynor
Cerra
UDL

Actually they are all ok.

I agree, take players who can play straight away.

Pick 2 should be Rayner or LDU.

Pick 5 is more interesting selection in terms of who to pick.

I'd rather the better footballer for a 12 year career than emphasise plug and play ready next year. They aren't mutually exclusive concepts, will be interesting to see who we get.
This.

I know it is nice to have new shiny toys but I promise you when the whips are cracking in finals a couple of years from now none of you will care how many games they played in 2018 if they aren't good enough when it matters.

We obviously have to do and redo our diligence on their characters but the whole point of top 5 picks is getting elite talent. If you pass on that just to hopefully (remember none of the predicted top 5 are from WA and all call somewhere else home) get someone who is more likely to stay then asking for pick 2 was a waste.

As much as anything the club can't be seen to be scared off by metro kids because the players will sense it. Club needs to be strong and back itself...also lock them away on new deals early if possible. Sign Ryan up too while you are at it.

You never know allen might make it to 40 for us. Brennan cox was in the all australian U18s and made it to our pick in the 40s.

Stephenson is the one that floats my boat but if Rayner is there at 2 you have to take him on best talent available and keep your fingers crossed Jaidyn in there at 5. IMO Rayner & Stephenson is more complementary than a Rayner and Fogarty, however, I wouldn’t be upset with either.

Rayner and Stephenson also seem to be quality characters going by their interviews and they genuinely look as though they just love playing footy wherever that may be. They don’t seem like entitled little brats that care more about their Instagram than their footy.

Bang on. Like the West Australian lambasting us after round 2 because Powell-Pepper played rly rly well against us which meant we made a mistake not drafting him at pick 7...
No idea at all.

Interesting to note from the 2016 draft that Cox was considered the best contested mark in the draft, and still fell to 40... mainly because he was listed as a defender.

I agree with this, that is why I think we should go for one of each.

Pick 2 for Rayner or Stephenson and pick 5 for who is left of Dow or brayshaw. Don't really get the cerra hype but he would be the other option.

Well whatever happens we are potentially going to end up with an absolute jet with pick #2 which has us all worked up. LDU or Rayner in Purple at a new Stadium is rather exciting - whatever your thoughts each player looks like a genuine contender that can make it. Pick 5 is more of a mystery really.

IF we were to go for a smokey pick like freo sometimes does. I would not be against going for Coffield at 5 at all, he has the best highlights package of anyone. Looks absolute class 190cm can play anywhere on the ground and is a real leader.

Highly, highly doubtful Allen drops that low. Sydney have shown interest at 14 and then Brisbane and Richmond in the late teens are also very interested. If he somehow gets past them I reckon WC take him at 21.
