I agree that we should end above Norf and G.C. (who will be trying to lose to win the Rankin cup) and that is probably it !!! We should fight it out with Bris for next spot......depends on injuries I guess. Pick 3 next year would be a very good get in a very good draft I imagine!!!

I think Hawks could be around the basement as well.

I have GC & Lions last. Norf, Carlton and Hawks grouped together. Not far behind Freo. The rise and falls come down to injuries to lists.

Hawks without Hodge are woeful. Can certainly see them falling badly in 2018.

As for us, losing a senior player like Gibbs will hurt the short term, and I expect us to finish in the bottom 6 again in 2018.

I see north and GC around the bottom. Then it's west coast, bris, Hawks, freo and us. The pack closely in front will consist of Saints, Collingwood and dogs. We could finish higher than all these teams and finish 9th-10th if our core youth group come on with the development they received in 2016, no injuries, a fitter side with our new conditioning coach making an early statement and consolidating our late season game plan. But most likely around the pack I've suggested. Anywhere from 12th to 16th.

Don't discount the development that occurs with another preseason intoour youth, the new fitness coach will want to bring a fierce preseason. The introduction of Cameron Bruce will be important going forward (I do recall Lewis stating this bloke as the reason he turned his career around at Hawks). Imagine what he could do with kerridge, boekhurst, Pickett, casboult, graham. Atleast one of these will show substantial improvement in 2018

Eagles are not going to be much in my eyes.
They rely a lot on Shuey, Josh Kennedy, McGovern, Yeo and Nick Nat like we been relying on Murphy, Gibbs, Cripps, Docherty, Simpson and Kruezer in recent years. Get an injury to a few and they will struggle to win many games like we have had to go through. I am also not a big believer in where Saints are going. A lot of B to B+ grade guys and I struggle to see much beyond Billings and Jack Steven that pushes into elite territory. They need McCartin to all of a sudden stop being concussed and get his career going to get anywhere but middle of ladder or lower.. As you say, the rise and falls come down to injuries as lists get more and more even across the board. Tigers had all their best players on field and protected from suspensions in later part of year. You can see what a bit of luck can do either side of middle of ladder. There are plenty of candidates for bottom 6 on ladder.

We will definitely be better than, at least:

Gold Coast
North
Fremantle

Possibly better than:

Collingwood
Hawthorn
West Coast
Dogs
Brisbane

Recon that puts us somewhere around 10-12th. 2019 is our bolter year

Not totally discounting the fact that this team could surprise in 2018 either, we are stacked with talent and should just 2 of our kids have breakout seasons like Curnow this year, that could potentially see us closer to 8th spot. Surely 1 of these players is SPS, who now gets a free hit at the pre season he didnt have last year.

Losing Gibbs could be a blessing in disguise, leaves an empty leadership void for the likes of your Dochertys & Cripps to come and grab, with their underlings to then assume their positions (ie. step up Lachie Plowman, Jacob Weitering, Tom Williamson).

Bolton will have a large say in how the squad perform next year.
I know many of the guys are young, but the will was clearly on show this year.
Trick will be to not only maintain that will, but to ramp it up, as the guys should now be that little but fitter and in some cases, quite stronger.

I feel that SPS, Fisher, CCurnow and McKay will step up.
We'd want to see more from Weitering, Pickett and Cuningham though, as for as OK a year they had, they have a lot more to offer.
Marchbank, Plowman and even SOS did as much as they could and are not the types to go backwards, except for injury.

Pretty keen on Polson also. Still think he could be the guys that surprises next year.

you may be right but hope we can get plenty of wins

getting 10 wins next season into a young group >>>>>>> high draft pick

The faster the kids can develop AFL tanks the better the effective contribution from the more experienced will be. I expect Kennedy/Cripps and Kreuzer to be able to hold their own against other inside opponents - but SPS #3/#10 ? will have top be able to play the first receiver role and be able to win their own ball when required - draw the tags away from Cripps. If Bolton and his coaching staff can fix the clearances which were woeful in second half last year - Cuningham/Pickett/Fisher/C.Curnow will be able to show whether they can develop a running kicking attacking game - if center bounces/set play clearances aren't fixed- there wont be much improvement to be seen.

Gibbs was the #1 go to guy after Murphy - and both were the best in controlling possession - with Gibbs gone Carlton loses a point of control and steadying influence - clearly - Bolton is looking to SPS to step up and become a general of the midfield and playmaker - SPS will have a lot of responsibility foisted on him and how he handles it will determine a lot - his running mates in Fisher/Cuningham/Pickett /Curnow have to learn to read each other's game.

This is why I would like to see a bloke like Raynor selected- someone who will take on the game at every opportunity - we need a younger aggressive mongrel lair running around ...

Clearances were woeful in the second half of last year, but I think the introduction of bam bam, and re-injection of Cripps and Curnow will help massively with this.

You're right in saying that we are reliant on somebody stepping up to the first receiver role. Hopefully SPS and a Cuningham in his third year can lift in this regard.

Hawks' last 6-8 weeks was pretty good and they were not reliant on Hodge at all. Hopes for their demise, as always with that CLub, are optimistic.
Agree..........and with Roughead having a year under his belt after his health issues will be more match hardened and probably have more impact. Did beat the Swans twice and most people rate them the most talented in the comp, so never write off the haws until they are dead and buried.......also Rioli will be like a new player for them in 2018.

Round 1.

Plowman Jones Simpson
Docherty Marchbank Weitering
Murphy Cripps Cunningham
SPS C.Curnow Sosos
Rayner Casboult Wright
Kreuzer E.Curnow Kennedy
Int: Bryne Thomas Pickett Fisher

Would like us to play some attacking and fast football. I think we may move up the ladder a xouple of positions but we wont go backwards.

Everyone is saying we’ll hurt short period without Gibbs
I don’t know Gibbs’s number over the last two years, so I may be wrong. But could a player with better disposal efficiency with lower disposals be better than Gibbs with higher disposals with a lesser disposal efficiency

My lasting impression of Gibbs was just get ball be under pressure, bomb ball to opposition

Maybe I’m being too harsh

7-9 wins is what I'd be hoping for.Bottom 4 Gold Coast, north, west coast,Freo. Not playing players like Thomas, kerridge, white (if still there) will mean we are doing well.Full season for Mckay/Marchbank/Cripps will make a huge difference.

yep - had a major case of whack the ball on the boot to clear the area which is a deadset high-risk, low percentage way of keeping possession

Worked ok for 2017s best player though- probably a bit to do with what's downfield. Think you were a little harsh on Bryce, he was always the wrong Waugh twin perhaps?

no doubt about it I used to take my frustrations out on him post game for what I perceived was lack of effort - I stand by that but have only respect for him and good wishes in the wash-up

I still believe, was going for immediate improvement in 2018 though

There's 14 players there and I can't for the life of me pick one that I can't see making it.
A couple will undoubtedly fall out of favour, have some 'issues', want to move clubs etc, but one has to be happy with that group.
Next trick is to nail picks #3 & #10 and luck it in with one, or all of, Polson, Kerr and Lebois.
