Many counties across the world operate successfully with minority collation Governments, where you often get the best from all parties. I don't fear having 2 parties running the SA Government & believe it will be a good thing.

Because he is active politician, which is what he is paid for... unlike half the politicians in this country which do little for their entitlements.

I saw that up close and personal here. They'll resurrect past stalwarts who are miles out of touch that were the architects of their years in the wilderness in the first place. I'm not saying SA wouldn't be best served by a Liberal government, but it will be about the talent in the room, not past experience that has nothing to do with them.

I’m not saying it hasn’t, what I’m saying he’s lauded but that’s easy to do when you don’t actually have to manage anything except your self interests.

If he gets to become Premier let’s see how he goes when he has to make tough decisions that aren’t popular or will he ignore that and just make the popular ones?

1. People can hate Labour / Liberal / Greens all they want, but they have established infrastructure and you basically know what they stand for. Liberal = business, Labour = people, Greens = trees. Mr X's total inability to elucidate what is known in other places as "policy" is scary. Anyone can claim they'll keep the bastards honest - hell, it was the Democrats screed for years - but what does that entail exactly? Less waste? Every party wants that. What does he actually plan to do?

2. Mr X has no party infrastructure. Where's his mechanism for vetting candidates and such? I think he will fall foul of the same thing Pauline Hanson has in QLD - attracting nutjobs who the major parties wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.

We'll elect him and one other person to the MLC or something, and it will Jay W-like spin, but for Mr X.

You said Nick had done more than the State Libs. The State Libs had the vision for the city which is currently gaining some life.

Libs weren’t against AO. It was just political point scoring since the Labor party ran with the AO option as a point of difference because they wanted to build The Marj. Libs policy was to support AO if a that was more feasible. They wanted a city stadium, preferably a new one, but didn’t not want AO redeveloped.

They just thought it couldn’t be done to get the AFL/SANFL/SACA together. Credit to Foley for that.

I agree with you in that I think Xenophon is in it for Xenophon, but the options here aren't a) Xenophon runs the state and he wrecks the joint or b) either Jay or Marshall gets in and they don't wreck the joint.

I also think the current governmental system, backed up by a bloated and ineffective public service is broken beyond repair. So I can see why people thinking an alternative that wasn't involved in that whole mess would be a positive.

While I see this as potentially our Trump moment, you can genuinely understand why people would see Xenophon that way when they are so disillusioned with the other options.

The positive with Mr X is that he isn't beholden to anyone. He can govern purely based upon his own version of pragmatism. I know that moving away from the 2 party system that has delivered such wonderful results to the people of SA these last few years scares many, but in reality, the reason that X seems to be garnering so much support is because neither of the 2 'major' parties deserve to govern in their own right. The reality is that Labour's infrastructure has largely failed to deliver good and accountable govt to SA. Libs may have infrastructure, but they have zero experience governing, they will pay millions of consulting dollars to dinosaurs that haven't been relevant for years. In terms of vetting candidates, it's not that hard and I doubt that he'll end up with the Hanson/Clive nutjobs who turn on him the minute they're elected. And if they do, then whatever majority he was to hold would be whittled away.

In my view, the best outcome for SA is a minority government. Labour have been incompetent, secretive and arrogant and the Libs aren't even a decent opposition. Having said that, I doubt that X is more likely to fail than either of the other 2 if he ends up with a majority. If either party had a record of management to stand on, then he wouldn't win enough seats anyway. But they don't.

Bill Shorten is a faction man par excellence. Few politicians have more shrewdly navigated, divided and corralled the various sub-factions of the Labor Party and the trade union movement to their advantage. But the Labor leader’s decision to sit down with sub-faction bosses, the disgruntled and the ambitious, and consider torpedoing the so-called “stability pact” that has kept the peace inside Victorian Labor is bewildering. Shorten, despite being Labor leader for four years, has not given up the factional game playing or eschewed the powerbroker ethos that he used to rise to national prominence, become a minister, play kingmaker and then seize the leadership. I can’t think of another Labor leader who has got involved in the weeds of factional deal-making at a state level like this before. Is there nobody Shorten can trust to do this dirty work? He should be at arms-length. But Shorten has a blind spot when it comes to the militant Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union. This rogue union is a serial law-breaker. Dozens of its officials have been charged and it has paid out millions in fines. It has been admonished by judges in courtrooms all over Australia. The CFMEU should be avoided like the plague. Bob Hawke and Kevin Rudd urged Shorten to cut ties with the CFMEU but these calls fell on deaf ears. That the CFMEU is still affiliated to Labor, with a direct say in policy and personnel, is a disgracehorten is close to the CFMEU leadership. Their votes were critical in the debate over refugee policy at Labor’s national conference in July 2015. And Shorten would not have been leader without the votes of breakaway left faction MPs in the caucus ballot for leader in October 2013.
