It’s all political. Want the first and lasting impression to be that the previous govts decision on location was wrong. But this will backfire.

They are such lightweights (Mcgowan and Saffioti) and their behind the scenes people like Guy Houston...
As much as I despised Barnett towards the end he wouldn't give a **** if the transport failed, ironic it's his **** off attitude that I hated. It's going to be very embarrassing and piss weak if they backflip again, especially when they should this time.

How would they choose the 40k seats to have open? Woild they decide to have whole blocks closed? Or randomly keep 15k seats empty across the whole seating plan?

I went to the Scorchers v England Lions game that was put on for the people that had worked on the stadium. There were 10 000 tickets given out, so they only opened the lower tier. I imagine they would do the same again and leave the top tier closed.

Disappointing decision to keep numbers down for the Scorchers game. If people are made aware of the issue, then they can make the decision themselves that they will still go despite the fact there would be delays.

COLIN Barnett — the man responsible for selecting Burswood as the site for Perth’s new stadium — has ridiculed plans to cap crowd numbers for its first major weeknight event as a “silly idea” that would embarrass the State.

“Big Bash (League) gets a huge following, it’s a great spectacle, and people will quite properly be angry if we’ve got 15,000 to 20,000 empty seats when they could clearly be used,” Mr Barnett said.

“(Rita Saffioti’s) job is to work out how to get people there, not to stop people going to the game.”

Mr Barnett said concerns about traffic delays could be handled by communicating with motorists, and using parking nearby, including Belmont Park Racecourse.

“If there is a little bit of congestion before the start of the game, so be it,” he said. “That is far better than having people who would want to go and see the Scorchers if they were in the finals miss out.

"How absurd would Perth look if the brand new stadium with 15,000 to 20,000 empty seats — it’s just ridiculous."

WACA chief executive Christina Matthews said if the Scorchers hosted a final, Optus Stadium gates would open at 11am for a Women’s BBL semifinal, and she encouraged people to go early, easing demand on the transport system.

Ms Matthews said Ms Saffioti’s revelation of a cap came as a surprise.

“We had been notified that there was a potential of a cap and we were going through the process last week of raising the fact we wanted to revisit that,” Ms Matthews said.

“We thought there would have been more talks around starting times, because the BBL semifinal day starts with the women’s semifinal, so the gates will be open at 11am.

“I don’t think the fact it’s an all-day event has been taken into account.”

THE WA government looks set to again bow to public pressure and reverse one of its decisions, this time over a cap on attendance at a new stadium for a Big Bash League cricket semi-final.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti announced on Monday an “interim decision” to cap the 60,000 seat-capacity Optus Stadium at 40,000 for the mid-week match due to construction delays on the Matagarup Footbridge likely to cause crippling pressure on public transport.

But after a public outcry, Ms Saffioti now says she will propose staggering arrivals to the stadium when she meets later on Wednesday with representations of the WACA, VenuesWest and Public Transport Authority.

Ridiculous from the government. I hate to agree with Colin, but he is right.

The government cannot just say there is a problem with the infrastructure so we give up and you taxpayers that have forked out for the new stadium will have to miss out.
They have to say, there is a problem with the infrastructure, so we need to work together and compromise with our expectations of wait times for transport etc.

McGowan is like a wet lettuce leaf. Some people are leaders and some are not and in my opinion he fits into the latter - doesn't seem to know how to make the right decisions.

Wembley Downs, eh? Hardly a swinging voter. Explains the stupid comment.
McGowan has had a good first year. He hasn’t fixed the Liberal’s mismanagement yet, but he’s on the way. Now there’s a political party that should never be allowed near public money: at state level failed small businessman who can’t do anything right without causing bigger problems down the road.

I’m fine if McGowan backs down if the right decision is eventually made. Two out of three of their backdowns so far have been correct, imo.
And it may be that the discussion about the stadium encourages people to get to the final early, in which case good.

Did i read correctly that the stadium doesnt have escalators, only lifts??! Disaster waiting to happen, certainly doesnt work in london

“Stadium Station doesn’t have escalators but it does have 11 lifts...so everyone should be catered for.”

It would have stairs for everyone except those who can't use them, and most peple who can't use stairs can't use escalators anyway (wheelchairs, prams, walking frames).

Problem is able bodied people who use escalators but not stairs.

At the mcg ponsford stand, you have an escalator going up, and i had no issues getting in the elevator.

At games end the escalator is shut, and everyone must use the stairs. I was queuing for the lift for 20-30 mins behind families and the like, none with prams frames or imparirments

I was waiting for a Labor supporter to respond to my post and you didn't let me down:rolleyes: Being serious for a minute though it would be better if McGowan could make the correct decision to start off with though as backing down like he does just makes him appear weak as a leader. My opinion only of course!

Sometimes the wrong decisions are made (they're probably human and they aren't the sharpest tools in the shed... just the slimiest). Regardless of political leaning it's nice when the right decision is eventually made.
Our politicians are there to represent us, not rule us so having a strong decisive 'leader' is more a dictator a good leader can also recognise when they've made a mistake and listen.
So if we, the public make it known we are unhappy with a decision that we think they ****ed up and they listen then that, in my opinion, is the system working!

Good news if the cap is lifted, disappointed I won't be in the country to go to the game.

The problem is that they've actively been preventing people from using rideshare to the venue and pushing more people onto the trains. But the trains don't have the capacity. So why the **** were they doing it, instead of promoting many different ways to get to the venue?

Short term solutions:
Open Belmont Park carpark.
Work with Crown to get people parking there. A 4-7pm game on a weeknight isn't a peak hour for them.
Open Burswood Park as a carpark.
Even open McCallum Park for cars as a last resort. Probably a bit too far to be realistic though.

Why do people need to drive to the venue ?.

Has the Turf Club advised if they are going to open Belmont to parking ?. Get a community group ( Lions, scouts, local school ), to co-ordinate the parking, they would make a mint.

Just think people need to think outside of the square, and approach the Burswood Stadium with renewed open eyes. There are walkways along the shores of the river, aim to enjoy a nice stroll to the footy, rather than a drive to the front door.
