Why does the left say very little about the abuse women and gay people receive in the middle east ? the left even doesn't seem to say much about the high rates of domestic violence happening amongst indigenous communities , why ?

Going back to what I've just said, I think a reason you believe this to be true is because you don't engage with anything from the left. Hard to get a bead on what "they" are saying if you always give them a wide berth.

I think there is a level of hypocrisy in some elements of the left regarding Islam and the treatment of women, but to say they don't care or don't have anything to say is just wrong.

The right are pointing it out and discussing it because it is sick and disturbing acts against humanity to murder homosexuals for their sexuality, afford women no basic rights and kill them by stoning if they disobey their husbands, and slaughter people of different faith.

These are the most disturbing sick breaches of human rights, so why do the left entirely ignore it?? Why do they not speak up and stand up for these people with protests and speaking up outraged?? Why are they actually silent and do nothing?

You the left couldn’t care about homosexuals and women oppression, as the most evil acts oppressing women and homosexuals the left actually try to argue against it.

The right are disturbed deeply by this and I can vouch it is genuine as we discuss it quite regularly and want to make change to help these people over there.

We are appalled that homosexuals are killed and women are afforded no rights in the Middle East.

Thank god for the right, or what hope would these people have.

Definite hypocrisy by the left on these issues. I chat to many left leaning people about aboriginal domestic violence and they claim it’s all exaggerated and blown out of proportion which knowing enough people who have been close to it (generally more left than right, but not the inner city hipster lefties) that it’s 100% true and a big problem.

Extremes of both sides have problems acknowledging inconvenient truths to their narratives. Further reiterates my stance that living by any ideology is dumb and dangerous

When people say Europe is turning into a shthole have they actually come over here and seen the place?

I've never spoken with anyone who has come and visited and thought that way. A few first timers find it a bit disappointing which almost always comes back to the cost of travelling through here compared to closer Asian countries.

Can't find the post now but whoever that was rattling off a bunch of places and saying he'd never want to be there at night... The chances of him actually being in those places are about 1 in a million. And if he did well... suck shit cause you just spent $5K+ to come to Europe and had a shit time

I can't speak for those places mentioned but there's only one time I've felt particularly vulnerable in Europe and that was wandering through Brussels about 10 years ago when I found my way into a council estate.

Everything else has been on par with what I've experienced in Australia. 99% perfectly safe, 0.999999% little bit dodgy, 0.000001% really dodgy.

It's quite cute that many conservatives think Europe was this perfectly safe place a decade ago and that bad things have only started happening in the last two years. But then it's fit in with the world view of those who needs one of Murdoch's fabulous journalists to think for them.

More unsafe than Gaza is a bit much, but seeing stories like this (hand grenade attacks have been on a rapid rise in Sweden in the last few years) it's hard not to think that that country is going a bit downhill.

Sweden has had an issue with migrants no doubt. Through the the last several decades there has always been issues when migrants influx into areas. This is going to happen when huge amounts of people get displaced of which western governments, Russia and the wealthier gulf states (Saudi Arabia) can share a huge portion of blame.

But anyone suggesting Europe is turning into a shithole is just propagating a scaremongering myth.

Although there has been an outdated and concerning rise in terrorism in the last couple of years, it's just fanciful to suggest Europe was ever this perfectly peaceful place prior. Anyone under 80 has seen Europe experience World Wars, deaths due to communism, the Yugoslav wars, ETA, IRA (in all its various forms), football hooliganism as well as Islamic terrorism.

Vegan protesters storm Melbourne steak restaurant

A GROUP of vegan protesters stormed a Melbourne steak restaurant on Saturday night chanting slogans through loudspeakers and yelling at customers.

Thirty-five activists from Direct Action Everywhere Melbourne and Melbourne Cow Save Animal Liberation Army entered the Rare Steakhouse on King St in the CBD at around 6.30pm “to speak up for animals where their dead bodies were being consumed”.

In a video posted to Facebook, the group can be seen protesting on both levels of the restaurant as around 25 bemused customers eat their dinner.

“In order to create change in our society, we must challenge current belief systems and force people to take a side — oppression or justice, cruelty or compassion,” Melbourne Cow Save wrote on Facebook. “There is no humane way to kill someone who does not want to die.”

Rare Steakhouse venue manager Arryanne McIntosh said the group had loudspeakers and “were repeating propaganda and stuff relating to consumption of meat”.

“It was hard to communicate with them,” she said. “I asked who was in charge and one lady said, ‘We all are.’ We were trying to talk to them but they were quite in-your-face with talking and speaking over the top of you — they were very loud, yelling.”

Ms McIntosh said staff called the police, who took about 15 minutes to arrive. She described it as a “very upsetting situation” for customers and staff. “You’re coming in for dinner and spending X amount of money — you don’t want people yelling in your face,” she said.
