Williamson was with the injured group and didn’t do any running. Other things I saw: the standout for me was big H. Moved well. Strong in one on one contests, albeit against smaller opponents. Dominated against Kerr. Was like watching an adult vs an U 15.
Macreadie trained with the forwards for an extended period. Swing man or possible move as a tall defensive forward??Byrne was sizzling with no knee strapping.
Weitering, only 1 shoulder strapped and cruised through the session. Kreuzer spent the entire session working with De Koning SPS running laps only but looked much stronger through the core. Dow trailed Murphy everywhere. His lower body/legs are very developed for such a young kid. I liked a lot of wha Schumacher did. Cunners noticeably bigger. JP, glides in running drills.
Daisy barely won a contest. JSOS looked very slow. Kerr, slow and well beaten. Didn’t notice Lobbe out there, and Phillips clearly moving poorly in the injured group.

I have to once again state I wasn't fully invested but on the strength of what I saw:

The 1 on 1 forward drills showed McKay to be quite imposing, but so he should be pitted up against Shaw and O'Shea at times.
He took some nice grabs on those 1 on 1's and was very active throughout. Maybe he just enjoyed the extra eyes on him today.

Kennedy was also in very high spirits. He just looked thrilled to be out there and hardly stopped encouraging, chatting and laughing.
More importantly though he did show his strength and wasn't pushed off the ball. His torso looks somewhat slender which gives the impression he could be an easy push-over, but when he grounds himself, he's just not easy to budge. I liked what I saw of him today. Match sim is what we want to see, though.

This may sound silly as everything Dow did, he did well, but didn't stand out to me because he simply met my expectations.
Looks thoroughly focused and skills were evident early. Took a one handed mark so effortlessly, you would have thought he was at training....
I'm simply thrilled to have been in a position to take him at #3.

I suspect this is the reason. photo of bam bams legs - may have been digitally enhanced-- or not

FFS Zee. Enjoy a lot of your work but seriously re-read your last couple of posts. No need to completely belittle people for expressing an opinion.
The opinion expressed was merely 'thats the dumbest thing I've read on here' which isn't going to generate decent discussion. This board has become pretty painful to sift through lately - footy can't come soon enough.

Lobbe definitely out there and trained exclusively with the main group.
Yes. Jack looked slow. He really labours through those first couple of steps.
So Williamson was on the far side of the ground and didn't join in at any point. Fair enough.

You prefer the "my opinion carries more weight and I’m vastly superior to you" approach?? (Not you)

Your latter point is bang on though. I even enjoyed watching Richmond smack * in a JLT game.

People witnessing (or not witnessing) sps Williamson Lang not participating in training need to be aware it could just be they are in the recovery group and their minutes are being tapered at the moment. These players could still play JLT.

Lang won't play this week at least, on my 'expert' opinion. ")
Had a few kicks but then kicked around his foot as though there may have been some discomfort there or just trying to loosen it up a bit.

As someone else had mentioned, SPS looks much harder than he had looked, this time last year. Looks taller to me also and certainly taller then Murphy, given their list 180cm. Dare I say it; He looks like a bull.

Williamson I have no idea about. Could have just had a chilled day, but at least he made it onto the park.

I'll add some observations, agree with Harker in that I'm surprised there haven't been more posts.

Our better players cruised a bit through the session which is to be expected. I don't really see a lot of point going over Murphy Simpson Kreuzer other than to say "seem fit and well". We know what we are going to get.

Younger player thoughts:
- Byrne moved really well. Back to his nimble best and I remain hopeful of him becoming a good afl player
- CC looked terrific. Is very competitive. Took all of the drills seriously. Am confident he will continue on from where he left off last year.
- Pickett looked ok but still not in superb afl shape for mine. But better. I'd expect a bit more from him this year from what I saw.
- both Obrien and Dow bothered me a bit I have to say. I Wont go too hard on young players. All I will say is 'things to watch for are decision making and cleverness in close'. Dow has huge legs and good power though. Obrien doesn't look afl ready body wise to me.
- cunners was his usual self. The best athlete out there, looks a million bucks, then inexplicably sprays a kick. I always leave scratching my head about him. Seems to be positioning for a backline role which is probably a good idea as he can then be led to the ball. Lacks the smarts required to find it himself.
- McKay looked stronger and imposing althoughhe will keep those chicken legs for life I'm afraid. Clunked a couple and looked impressive enough. I didn't get too excited though as he always seems to do the flashy stuff.
- Barely noticed Kennedy. Not sure why.
- fisher was terrific. Probably the standout of the young guys after Cc. Zippy. Into it. Kicked it really well. Was really evasive.
- jack was jack. No point continuing to call him slow. He is. He's also clever and showed that several times. I remain convinced he's a long term defender because he's so composed user pressure.
- Garlett did nothing to stand out to me. Although to be fair maybe did half the main session. Didn't actually look THAT quick which surprised me.

Happy to add more if anyone interested in anything specifically.

Overall I was pretty underwhelmed I have to say. Not massively excited about enough of the young guys.

Finally, I overheard a conversation between Byrne and McDaid, or at least I assume it was a conversation. There were some hand movements and a lot of noise, they then both cracked up laughing, ran and hit Cripps on the arse.
I have sent a recording of the “conversation” to linguistic experts who said it would be translated by next Friday.
Hope this helped

I encountered three blokes in a hostel in Istanbul some years ago. They were talking among themselves as I was unpacking, etc. I reckon it took me 5 min or so to realize they were actually speaking English. They were Irish - ended up having a ball with them. Crazy bastards! :D

Spending the whole pre-season training as a defender will help him out. He got spanked by Buddy in round 23, but he was excellent last year and I'm bullish on him improving on that.
Buddy would have kicked a bag on most defenders that day.

It's funny you say that about Dow because apparently his decision making was one of his weaknesses. He was known to "blaze away". I guess the only look I've had of him was AFLX and it obviously wouldn't show up there because the players were under no pressure. I'm sure he and the coaches will be working hard on that.
I must admit I do prefer these more negative reports on our board because when I see a positive (Fisher, CC) I actually do get excited

Cunners appears to have the tools to play at HB. And there certainly is a spot back there for him.

I didn't that may have been the case, but wiser men clearly do.
The only reason I say that is that I didn't think he'd have the concentration for a back post, although he does pressure well.

His speed and agility would be a weapon though and that's what we need. Players that make opponents worry as soon as they have ball in hand.....and before they do in some cases. Reckon we're building that group with SPS, CCurnow, Pickett and not-too-far-away, Dow. Pick up a bonus Cuningham and Garlett and things could get fun, real quick.

I still believe Cunners will be a very good mid but playing him off HB makes a lot of sense. Has pace and good ball use which we need out of defence. Build his confidence. Much better than playing limited minutes in midfield then up forward. Hard for a kid to do
If JSOS doesn't come on, DC would make a great lead-up medium forward. Quick and a deadly set-shot.

I generally won't bother with Saturday open days as they're usually not a true representation of what may have come about through the week.
You could see players were quite relaxed and that showed up via their work-rate.

Not saying there isn't validity in what you're saying, but it's generally a wind-down day and a bit of a meet and greet, more-so than pulling out the real stuff.

Willo might be easing off after AFLX. Hopefully.

Can't agree Harks. Concentration isn't the issue. He is very young and inexperienced. Only just starting to adjust to AFL lifestyle. With Cunners it's about confidence and maturity. Has all the tools, just may take a little bit longer. HB may be the perfect development spot for him.

Fair enough. My observation comes about in the way players hold themselves at training and in some cases before a game.
Probably a little unfair, especially so for a young guy who obviously requires time to mature and you can't pit everyone up against Cripps & Docherty.

Interestingly though if Cuningham does become a core element in our back 6/7, how do you think it will look?
I know some aren't completely sold on a 15 gamer in Byrne, but I am, so......

Byrne Jones Plowman
Weitering Marchbank Docherty Williamson/Cuningham/Simpson?

I'm all for Williamson playing further up the ground. It will happen eventually

Cunners has the ability to be a Cam Guthrie type. Probably wont ever become a consistent midfield performer but I guess he's useful as a utility. Has real game changing ability and that 10% extra natural athleticism that sets him apart.

I'm not initially sure it's best utilised down back but if the coaches don't particularly like him in the midfield I'm keen to see him in the side in any position.

Re: SOS, he never really impresses on the track, much like Yarran never did. I'd like to see him really smash the gym at some stage because he's got footy smarts for days, but drifts out of games when his body doesn't allow him to do what his mind wants. He's a lead up forward though and Carlton would be the least desirable team for that style of player. Look at the Hawks game where about 10 kicks went to about 3m before his feet. Never seen someone eat so much grass.

Ratten and Carrazzo did their apprenticeship down back. Hones their defensive instinct. We turned Yarran into a good one on one defender too.

It's actually not a bad move for a player without the tank to be a full time midfielder or without small forward instincts to keep themselves in the game. Not sure who fits that bill with us.
