Autopsy Blues loss to Suns discussion/rant etc etc.

After a couple of days reviewing the game and taking into account other factors, it is difficult to make excuses for such a very poor effort from the "entire playing group and coaching staff" on the day, apart from a handful of players.

Although, a couple of things should be considered:

  • The nine day break is almost akin to a bye round and the win/loss record is damning for most sides after such a break
https://www.zerohanger.com/well-team-perform-bye-13429/

Your team’s win-loss record in matches after a bye since 2011

Team W/L
Hawthorn 7-1
West Coast 6-2
Adelaide 4-4
St Kilda 4-4
Fremantle 4-4
Melbourne 3-5
Carlton 3-5
Sydney 3-5
Essendon* 3-5
Port Adelaide 3-5
Western Bulldogs 3-5
Collingwood 3-5
North Melbourne 3-5
Brisbane 2-6
Richmond 2-6
GWS** 1-5
Geelong*** 1-6
Gold Coast 1-7

  • GC have been severely hampered over the last 2 years with injuries and with the appointment of Dew and a healthier, more mature list, they were an unknown quantity on a fast dry deck (Forget the North game, even though they won)
I wonder how this game would be reassessed at the end of the year, if GC finished in or around the 8

Ace we may have another 0 4 start! I won't like it either but that is the reality of where this list is at. They hardly know each other and there very raw with a small sprinkling of quality.
I think a 0 4 start would indicate we are far from where most believe the club is at. Not sure supporters who have seen 20 crap years will be happy to hear we need more time.

True but What's to say we don't get a winning streak happening later? I will wait until the end of the year and then assess.

is the definition of a streak winning say 2 in a row?

Nobody will be happy to hear we need more time, especially those of us who may not have another 20 years to wait lol.

In announcing a '66 game re-build'
the club has made a rod for its own back as many have taken that to mean we will be ready to challenge at the end of that time.

Clearly this will not be the case and it will take at least another two three years of consolidation after that.

I know we have been waiting a long time but at least this time we seem to be doing all the things that could set us up for a sustained period of success.

A poster on this thread awhile back said"We are like an expansion team without the concessions" I agree with that!
how are we like an expansion club when we're a foundation member from the vfa/vfl/AFL and have won 16 flags in the vfl all competition?

we're making excuses aren't we?

I feel sorry for Murph.

I never have questioned his effort or desire to do his best for the Navy Blue.
Because we have been crap he has been forced to play a role that doesn't suit him at all. People forget how small he is and the injuries he has suffered. If he had played his career as a wing/fwd he would have thought of differently.
IMO comments regarding Murphy have been unfair and in some cases disgraceful. Is he elite? No, but has played some good footy over a long period in tough circumstances. Games last year against Essendon, Sydney & Collingwood in which we weren't expected to win he was unbelievable.

Next year I hope they give the Captaincy to Doc or Cripps and let him play a better role without the burden.

He has had a career many would give anything for and has always given his best for the Navy Blue.

Your last paragraph/sentence is spot on.

For all my Murph bashing as a leader there's no denying his talent as a player.

I think there is some confusion between BF posters allegedly making excuses and our Club which is certainly not making any excuses.

Not sure what shouting ‘Standards !’ to other BF posters achieves.

No question we have come from a long way back with poor drafting, poor football governance and poor coaching / development. (It wasn’t all MM’s fault, he just made a bad situation worse, and rather rapidly).

We reset. We are staying the course. No quick fixes. Defensive mindset. Offensive layers. Synergy. No excuses.

Have faith.

Pretty much every team is going to bring the manic pressure against us and force turnovers, since it's clear we cannot combat it.

Unfortunate.
To get fair, that is what teams should be doing anyway

Hey guys,

I was asked to make a comp of Zac Fisher from the weekend, so here it is.

Watching the game live I didn't really notice him, but on replay he had some crucial one percenters and clean hands in a game riddled with fumbles.

Also something about the way this guy runs is great. We need more hunched, shifty looking bustlers in the game.

True. But...Captains embody 3 C's in leading their team: Caring, Courageous, and Consistent. Being named a team captain is quite the honor. The position of captain is given to those athletes whom the rest of the team respect and trust to lead the team in the right direction.

I think mark is caring. But courageous and consistent he is not.
I respect Murph for toughing it out and not leaving the club but he seems to be in cruise control too often.
You cant be that when you have the mantle as the leader.

You must inspire!

I think you can argue that he does embody all 3 of the "Cs".

You have rightly identified he is caring.

When you look at some of the serious injuries he has sustained, some have come about as a result of him putting his relatively small body on the line. This certainly ticks the courage box & he has won plenty of clearances/contested possessions over the journey.

As far as consistency goes he has won 2 John Nicholls Medals (2011 & 2017), finished 2nd in 2008 & 2009, 3rd in 2010 (Judd won in each of these seasons), 2nd in 2014 & 2015. Most of the years in which he hasn't featured at the pointy end of the John Nicholls Medal have been the result of serious injuries (2012 was a serious shoulder injury & 2016 was that terrible ankle injury).

Any suggestion that Murph is in "cruise control too often" is not supported by the facts.

Nice one. I’ve avoided watching the game because I know it will piss me off. Always like some good Fisher highlights, he’s a riper.
