After a couple of days reviewing the game and taking into account other factors, it is difficult to make excuses for such a very poor effort from the "entire playing group and coaching staff" on the day, apart from a handful of players.
Although, a couple of things should be considered:
Your team’s win-loss record in matches after a bye since 2011
Team W/L
Hawthorn 7-1
West Coast 6-2
Adelaide 4-4
St Kilda 4-4
Fremantle 4-4
Melbourne 3-5
Carlton 3-5
Sydney 3-5
Essendon* 3-5
Port Adelaide 3-5
Western Bulldogs 3-5
Collingwood 3-5
North Melbourne 3-5
Brisbane 2-6
Richmond 2-6
GWS** 1-5
Geelong*** 1-6
Gold Coast 1-7
Although, a couple of things should be considered:
- The nine day break is almost akin to a bye round and the win/loss record is damning for most sides after such a break

- GC have been severely hampered over the last 2 years with injuries and with the appointment of Dew and a healthier, more mature list, they were an unknown quantity on a fast dry deck (Forget the North game, even though they won)
