Having a GF in Perth or Adelaide doesn't grow the game or magically make it a national comp, GWS v Richmond in Perth lol, it would just cheapen the prestige, would be like watching a week 1-3 final.

I think though to be fair non vic teams should get minimum 2-3 games at the G in home and away season (or something)

Yes, i'd rather wait 15-20 years so a bidding war can happen between the current stadiums so the AFL gets a much much better deal. With the rate technology is advancing, it could be a completely different landscape and the AFL has just bent over for bugger all when there was no hurry.

I can only see two reasons for extending a 20 year deal by another 20.

1 - AFL is not national at all and they have no desire to have a fair and equitable sport or ever even consider moving the GF for any reason.
2 - The AFL is petrified about other sports or entertainment events that might take the GF off their hands and out of Melbourne if they don't lock it away.

Either option is weak from the current commission and they have clearly opted not to put their head over the ball.

Option 3 - brown paper bags between Gil and the Vic Govt is more likely

I think their should some clause where if both sides in the grand final are from the same city, it gets played there. I don’t care about any logical argument about practicality of changing the venue 1 week from the day and all the already sold tickets.

Even if they waited until 2030 or so, the outcome would be the same. The Vic Gov would be throwing money at it and the MCC would funding a new Southern Stand or some other development and we'd be having the same capacity/tradition/rotation/homegf arguments with the same outcome.

You obviously understand it more than most, but I think a lot of people think that they would end up with home GFs, when in fact it would be very unlikely, it was 1 in 72 years in the calculation I did assuming the alternating G/interstate model.

Already answered that one - sporting grounds get built AFTER events are tendered for not before - and seeing as its twenty years before the old contract had finished and they resigned it with zero notice to interested parties you would be the dumbest c}#% on the face of the planet if you did build it.

Your argument is flawed anyway. Sydney had a 110k stadium at one stage and the AFL had no interest in talking to them about fitting an extra 10k in for the GF. After all, it’s all about the numbers at the game....

My gut feel is the grand final rightly played at sacred home of game forever is about the only good thing to come out of this deal. Very skeptical any benefit I will see at Docklands. Money should have been invested in another ground built in south-east area that could hold at least 60,000. Metro area getting so big, just should have been done with any big vision. Grants for upgrading community football grounds and for women's football I won't knock but dirty on the waste on money on Docklands for what seems cosmetic reasons only.
