So you think he is worth more than 9? A guy who has 3 great years left and maybe 2 more after that?

I get Adelaide paid big for Gibbs but they wanted to add cream to get that elusive premiership. We arent there yet

At Trade Week this year, Shiel will be (within a week) 3 years younger than Gibbs was when he was traded. He was All Australian last year! The only thing affecting his value is his FA status next year.

I agree. But that's how it would present to their fans who would be braying for blood. To do that SOS would bend them over again. While spanking them he'd ask if they liked that and wanted more.

In Thy's immortal words … they will like it …. ;)

PS: Still don't think we will end up with Pick 1 though ….

Expecting a "no, you" reply tomorrow to this post.

Glad you recognise he is a FA next year. And it should affect his trade value as a positive for us. So no to a top 2 pick

No way Id be happy with us paying $1 mil for Shiel. Not a million a season player IMO.

You have to pay overs to get a player from another club. Whilst $1M a year is alot of money for Shiel, we have to spend the money somewhere. If Murphy does end up leaving, that opens up even more money for us to spend.

North are reportedly 5 for 5

If we go deeper I’ll throw up
I'm guessing the order of deal size is ranked:
1. North: all the money for as many years as he wants (or 5 for 5 as you mentioned)
2. Saints: Nearly there but not enough in the end. Just like 2010
3. Carlton: Ballpark of market value plus a little to make him think about moving. Most likely not enough in the end.
4. Collingwood: perhaps a touch under market value to fit him in, hoping he wants to stay and repay the faith. Best ladder position of the 4 teams, larger chance of success (at least in the short-medium term).

Gut instinct says he re-signs with Collingwood up until he hits FA. The other alternative is take the money and run to Arden St. Not sure us or Saints are really in this. I'm ok with that, I don't want us to get caught in the cycle of godfather offers to try and force our status as a somewhat destination club...

If you're talking #1 for Shiel alone, then I agree with you absolutely. SOS will not do that deal.

But our first pick should be on the table. And we need, as the club says over and over, more (gun) players in their prime age group.

I'd still offer our first round pick for next year. I just don't want to remove ourselves from the pointy end of the draft this year.

Sometimes I feel that Shiel has his posse running riot on here.
There's certainly two distinct camps on this one.

IMO, a lot of us are getting bogged down in the theory of list management, which is different from LM in practice. There are many benefits to getting Shiel and these could really get this build rolling.

We can say that it's too early for big fish and that we'll pick them up when we're ready, but there's no guarantees out there. Just ask St Kilda or North Melbourne what accumulating cap space gets you.

On the assumption (not saying this is true) Shiel has told his manager 'get me back to Carlton', I think you're playing a dangerous game if you tell him to wait a year.

I am truly starting to think SOS will negotiate a 2019 Pick 1 trade in somewhere this year …. just cant fathom the puzzle yet …..

I agree.
Unless its a deal way too good to say no to, next years first round pick should be on the table.

Great Summary

Clearly, you get it.

Carlton have been after Shiel for some time now and for him to say that he's now ready and for us to reply with a; "Put the brakes on Dylan. It serves us better to get you next year", may understandably not go down too well.

If Dylan wants to come to us and if it's now, it has to be now. If he's cool hanging around GWS another year, then that's cool too.
