List Mgmt. What to do with Josh Bruce?

Should probably take this thread down. McCartin is just too damn slow for our playstyle. Would actually rather see Battle and Membrey lining up as our only key forwards and play Marshall to chop out in the ruck because McCartin just hurts to watch play footy, especially when he misses all his very limited chances.

In other words, we couldn't get rid of Bruce with the fact all our good forwards (Membrey, Battle, Gresham, Long) are too small and even still we need to use our pick on getting Ben/Max King to put some pressure on McCartin to actually kick goals in order to keep a spot.

Apologies for jumping the gun on Brucey.

I've changed my mind. I say we should keep him but I think we 100% need to send him to defence, I didn't realise how poor our depth was back there, without Jake we look very vulnerable.

This thread is madness..
Modern game needs tall athletic forwards who can kick goals...
What’s Bruce? Tall athletic fwd with a huge tank who has proven he can put together solid SEASONS of goal kicking...
Review all of our talent taken from pick 20 on and make a case as to why we would consider this a good deal for us...
Madness...

Spot on. Bruce has his faults but he can compete and run a good defender into the ground all day long. Big forwards with ability to clunk the odd big mark and kick a couple per game are invaluable. Throw in an elite tank and competive nature and you have a really valuable package.

I think Bruce and Battle can form a real headache combination for opposing teams if we can find a game plan that works around them. Membrey is 3rd tall, Gresh and Long and Billing’s at their feet.

Giving a 50 a goal season forward away for a second round pick? that’s madness.. Out of Battle, Bruce, Membrey and Mccartin, only Bruce and Membrey has proved themselves with 50+ goal seasons, so the answer is keep Bruce and play the 3 that are in form.

One advantage of this, is that it can be used to keep all four keen. Three spots, four players, earn it, every single week.

If Marshall keeps improving then it will be 5 players competing for 3 spots, although Marshall could play in the ruck (but only if our #1 ruckman Acres is injured)

It would have to involve a pick 10-20 somehow, whether that involved swaps or other players. E.g longer for 30; Bruce + 30 for 15.
He’s not indispensable, but has to be worthwhile.

Would hate to trade him then see him become a 50 goal a year player.. would be the most st kilda thing ever.

You know we would sell him to Sydney and he'd become a superstar and the darling of the AFL. Every journalist would gush over how clever they were to spot his talent when no one had heard of him before. That's how we roll with our big forwards.

He is already a 50 goal a year player
50 -24
38 - 22
36- 27
imo Bruce has more chance of coming good again then Paddy does, and is more suited to todays Footy

Why do we have to do anything with Bruce ? He’s a handy forward who pinch hits in the ruck although I wish he didn’t . If he’s in form and fit then he plays seniors like any other player imo.

Go Saints

Exactly.

There's a heap of other list cloggers more important to get rid of than Bruce. Way more upside than most.

Keep.

This one I don't agree with. I just don't get the lack of love on this board for Bruce. Okay his last two seasons have been a let down but fully fit he still represents a solid forward option. One with a great tank, fearless and versatile. Sure he's been a disappointment of late but when we have a dearth of experienced players in the mid 20's age bracket it would be foolish to let him go.

Two years ago I would've rated him in our 6 most valuable players. This year has been a write off but it's way too soon to be letting him go. He won the Freo game for us last year and players capable of kicking 4-5 goals don't grow on trees.

Hey, does everybody remember 2014, when Jack Steven had really bad injuries, and lots of us thought he'd peaked, and started to think he was crap?

No, of course not.

... And that's why the Saints won't be trading Bruce.

I rate him. I really think we haven't seen Bruce's best, we may not but with Roo being the man and now hes gone but injuries have struck Bruce but he had a solid preseason.

Could be similar to Steven, he could come back much better in 19/20/21 seasons and have a good career. With few tweaks to his game, he's a gun.

True, but I'm not sure why we'd want him to. He is a much better forward than defender, and the best tall forward we have at the moment. Would rather back the development of Austin and Clav than sacrifice our best forward.
Our defensive stocke r poor Bruce needs to stay because he can kick goals neither Mccartin Battle or Marshall have proven that yet we r only talking potential. Maybe we should try Battle as a key defender as other clubs have with key forwards and have been successful as we all know it is easier to be a defender than key forward in this era

Bruce is our full forward going forward. I would trade McCartin for what ever we can get cut our losses. The other option is keep McCartin on the list playing VFL until his trade value improves.
You dont improve a players trade value by playing them in the VFL, thats how you kill their worth.

Mitchell was playing in the NEAFL and Hawthorn paid pick 12 for him I believe.

We are never going to get a reasonable return for outlay on Paddy, because he is so limited. Thats why I would trade him out this year if possible.
