Play Nice Was that Gaffs last game for WC?

Didn't Trevor Nisbett son have his jaw broken in similar circumstances? Pretty sure that guy received a criminal conviction.
Nisbett stance on breaking a guy's jaw seems to have changed.

Have you ever thrown a straight arm punch? Do fighters throw straight arm punches? No? Why not?

Generally because the opponent will see them coming more easily. However, that's in a situation where you're expecting someone to try and knock your head off.

History is important. To say otherwise is false. It plays a big role in our justice system and it does so in the AFL process as well. Past behaviour either gives you credits in the bank or an overdraft. That's just a fact. Gaff is going to get a week off whatever sentence is handed down due to his pristine record. I'd suggest it will be in the vicinity of 8 to 10 with a week reduced.

I some what agree with you.
I do agree that he should get a hefty holiday as you mentioned but I was thinking more along the lines of 6 or 7 with one week reduction.
For mine...I don't see the difference between (just as an example) someone who is say 20 years old as opposed to someone who is 40 - king hitting someone.
The 20 year old could get leniency due to his age and lack of experience but hadn't king hit someone before. Where as a 40 year old has experience and should know better could gets leniency as well due to not doing the same before.
I don't care...the person who was king hit still has to deal with the repercussions no matter the experience or lack off of the offender.
Law shits me with its standard of proof and 'character references' to try and get a lighter sentence for the perpetrator.
Absolutely none of this is provided to the actual victim - the one suffering.
So the justice system for mine is a joke in itself.

Don't get me wrong....always liked Gaff as a player (don't know him personally so cant comment there) and thought he appeared to be a nice person.
But he's lost me here. The action speaks for itself.
If he gets through his career without another indiscretion than so be it...but that is a big 'if' and why give people the benefit of the doubt once they have proven what they are capable of? You don't have to answer that btw...its just a question I find asking myself when I see people getting off/off lightly when it's clear they deserve more.
In this case I am sure Gaff will be dealt with severely enough.

the upside for the Eagles though, is Gaff can't leave the club after that incident. Gaff has to stay and repay the club.
Would that get him back in the 'good bloke' club with Hodge?

They generally don't cheer for coward punches though. Commiserations on your team's season by the way.
The crowd was unaware of Gaff's hit at least the details of it. It was not shown on the big screen as Tim Gossage pointed out.
No decent supporter should condone that act. All they saw was Gaff being targeted by Freo players hence they cheered when he kicked a goal.
Surely it's not that difficult for you to understand, it's not as difficult as other things in life like winning away from the MCG.
Our season isn't over yet so hold back your commiserations until then. We have no fear in playing you at the G or anywhere else for that matter. We saw how the tigers turned into pussycats when we belted you at Optus. Infact I'd rather face Richmond than GWS for the grand final.

Should get Barry hall penalty...maybe a week extra cos of damage done. Any more and just another illustration that volume of public outcry sets the ruling.

No chance. He did not hit a defenseless guy like Hall did plus didn't have the rap sheet Hall had either.

I thought he would go anyway. I think he is on his way to melbourne for the tribunal and wont be back if he us rubbed out for the season. Its too like the eagles to sweep everything under the carpet to make it go away. Supporters today will be doing there loudest boos next year if he is another jumper

Want it be good once these is sorted so all the professor's on here can say I told you so...... isn't that what this whole thread is about?

I mean talk about repeated comments Gaffs a dog, coward punch, should be locked up banned it wasn't a jumper punch it was intentional I mean seriously how ever many weeks he gets is it really going to effect anyone here anyway.

I have no idea what the hell Gaff was doing/trying to do the young Brayshaw considering they're friends the whole thing makes very little sense

This is funny coming from a Freo supporter.- Here is 100k- sshhh.
He will return to Perth for the remainder of the season and be around the club as the boys have a crack at the flag. I do expect him to be back in Melbourne shortly after though, I reckon he made his deal before yesterday.

So I was seething at the Eagles fans for their reaction to Gaff in the 4th Qtr, but I'll give the majority the benefit of the doubt that they had no idea what had happened, but...

The players would have been told during the break and they should not have got around him like he'd kicked his first ever goal, and now...

It emerges Simpson has given Gaff the 4 votes in the coaches vote. There is ZERO chance he hadn't seen multiple replays by the time he put in his votes.

I'm sorry, but the club is rotten to the core.

How exactly did Brayshaw defend himself?

As some other posters have said, give it up ffs
He was standing right infront of him looking at him. Obviously what Gaff did is wrong, but don't compare it to Hall's who belted someone without them having a chance to see it coming

Why did Adam Simpson keep sending Gaff back out there?

Was it a deliberate choice to continue on as normal or was there a message in it?

I'm sure the question about whether it might be best to give him a rest was considered. The game was essentially won. There was a foreseeable chance of Gaff being seriously assaulted. Having him on the ground increased likelihood of fights and suspensions to other Eagles players 3 weeks before finals. Gaff was distraught and emotional, perhaps best not to expose him to more volatile situations. Gaff had conclusively broken the Eagles code of ethics and shouldn't be representing them for the rest of the game.

You might think I'm reaching with the last one, but TripleM had Barry Hall pulled off the air within minutes and fired the next day for making an off colour joke on the radio. Barry made a joke. Gaff violently broke someone's jaw. Maybe the difference is that this has nothing to do with values and everything to do with revenue generators (listeners, sponsors, members, supporters.) WC fans are rusted on whereas radio station listeners are more fickle.
