I personally think it was a swinging left jumper punch after Brayshaw pushed him in the right shoulder.
He didnt expect his punch to go so high and Brayshaw was leaning forward so it copped him under the chin.
So I dont think he meant it, doesnt seem to be that player and his contrition seemed genuine,

Having said that I love young Brayshaw quality kid, now his jaw is broken and season over.

So no matter that I dont think GAff meant it, its done and he needs to be punished.
The fact that Gaff has never been reported before and was a cleanskin, cant mitigate the damage done
to Brayshaw.

So for me that's 6 weeks and season over for Gaff.

Unfortunately that means we will need a miracle to win the premiership this year as we have no
replacement for him in our squad.
Dom Sheed is most likely replacement but he has been poor this year at afl level, and he has the worst final record of any player on
our list.

Why is this seemingly worse than say the Barry Hall punch? I say seemingly because people are asking for a longer suspension than Hall. To me it is fairly similar.

Yes, would've copped a couple of weeks at least if it connected with his chest, there is no argument that it was high impact.

There are circumstances where evidnece of one assists in determining proof of the other i.e if you broke his jaw you probably hit the person hard and you probably meant to do it

I personally disagree with the teenager aspect of the issue. However:

It will be interesting to see if age is an issue for "duty of care". Society says you don't hit kids, women, boys (18yo's are boys), king hit, kick on the ground etc etc. These are well established community values for duty of care.

If 18 y.o are considered boys (ie juvenile or child) then the AFL has a big issue on its hands allowing them to play professional men's sport- they would be negligent in their DoC.

Or, they are considered men as per the law in Australia. Its not really up for debate whether he is a man or a boy, the law says he's a man- its cut and dry. If he was to go for jail for something he would go to an adult prison so I really dont see what your point is here.
Anyway that is all besides the point and has no bearing on the charges. One AFL footballer belted another AFL footballer- there are no mitigating circumstances regarding age or size.

I will also say that that quote from Gleeson was one of the most profoundly stupid things a legal council has said in the AFL. Regardless of who did what, there are no minimum or maximum sizes in the AFL- it is a level playing field and should always be. That statement was purely arse covering to justify a decision that was clearly flawed by the preceding legal argument- but they gotta stick by their man.

I don't buy the "he was aiming for his chest". If you accidentally hit someone in the face you would realise instantly and go "shit, I didn't mean that" and then check to make sure they were ok. Instead Gaff just jogs on without even looking back.

Also Brayshaw is already quite crouched when Gaff winds up the punch, it's actually Gaff raising up (putting all his power into the punch).

To repeat, there is no excuse and he deserves a very long stint on the sidelines. So let's get that out of the way first.

Brayshaw was paying close attention for much of the game to Gaff. It happens. Certainly not unusual as Gaff has had taggers for a while now but this was a complete brain fade. Now he will be punished for it and I hope West Coast and Gaff do whatever they can to help in Brayshaw's recovery. I believe he has already issued an apology and I suspect he will take whatever the tribunal dishes out without complaint.
