Sorry but there has been about 80% negative from our club the last two years, unlike most I can’t and won’t live in fairy land and deny the truth mate.

Unfortunately this place is just an extension of the real world, pretend everything is ok and it might happen one day.

We won a flag and have had two years in the wolderness(STILL NO REAL REASON WHY THAT HAD TO HAPPEN) and next year will be worse imo.

Good call by the club in parting ways with Luke Dahlhouse.
It'll be strange seeing him play for Geelong.
But were Hawthorn fans happy to see Lewis in a Melbourne jumper? Mitchell playing for Wet Toast? Franklin for Sydney?
What about Johnson and Deledio at GWS? Stringer at Essendon?
The clubs all saw better ways to use the money and list space those players would have been taking up.
Dahlhouse was an integral part of our premiership-winning team and no-one will forget that.
But I'm excited if we can bring in a new, experienced player who can kick 30-40 goals.
Luke was never going to do that and he will never tear us a new one, like some feared Stringer would.

Al I’m stating is they have shown an ability to bring in ready made mature best 22 every year so their depth stays as depth and plays very little games. Imagine Jong at the hawks. He may be carried on the list but he would have played a lot less games than he has with us.

We don’t seem to have that ability so we bring in mid tier players and when they are down we have to play the depth players because the difference in clas isn’t as large as the others clubs.

I doubt anyone would argue with Hawthorn as the benchmark for maintaining a list. They've been outstanding.

I'm not so convinced about Geelong. They are now at the tail-end of an era when they had the happy coincidence of some great father-son selections and an old set of rules that allowed them to get them for third round picks. 2001 they get Ablett Jr for pick 40 allowing them to take Bartel with pick 8. 2006 they get Tom Hawkins for pick 41 allowing them to take Joel Selwood with pick 7. I think they've drafted very well over the years but only in 2015-16 have they landed any decent trades (Ottens was the only other decent trade and that was 14 years ago). Four of the the top 8 in their 2017 B&F came from trades made in 2015 or 2016.

Sydney has certainly sustained its list well but they've had a huge leg-up from their academy and COLA.

So it's no shame to be come off unfavourably against the Hawks or Sydney wrt to trades and FAs. The real test is how we compare to the rest of the competition.

My guess is around mid-table ... but we were probably lucky some of JMacs attempted deals didn't come off! I'm hoping Sam Power will be a bit more hard-nosed.

As far as depth goes I've made the point several times that our strength in 2016 was our evenness where there wasn't much difference between our 10th and our 22nd best players in most games. Even when we had injuries it was often true. For whatever reason (injuries, retirements, trades, form drop) we seem to have lost that evenness. So I take your point on depth this year but it wasn't the case two years ago.

Unfortunately Lukey D has just had a mediocre couple of years, which leading into signing the biggest contract of your career is not ideal.

Even factoring in his loveable tenacious character and what he's done for our club, the three year deal the club offered Dahl was extremely reasonable given the form over the last 24 months.

If he wanted a larger contract both in money and length then he should have played better footy. Simple.

I don't understand how anyone can be critical of the club with this. There's just simply no way we could pay him 550k for four years with the output and form he has produced the last two years.

As he said, we gave him a chance when no other club would. He's now taking a deal from another club that's well above what his value is to our side.

Why do we keep losing good players to other clubs?
How can Geelong offer more to Dahlhaus than us, and still fit him under their cap?

It is never a good thing to lose your key players, and despite the fact that our fan's continually under rate him (particularly on this forum), make no mistake that Dahlhaus was one the most important players in our current team and our 2016 premiership year.

I guess top players eventually get tired of being under rated and carrying the can for loses in teams full of passengers, because the match committee can't seem to break free of a youth development mindset.

Nope, you're definitely not the only one. Lots of people have been calling for us to cull our injury prone players.

One of the Smiths and probably Redpath have already gone. Morris is probably being held together by bits of titanium and who knows whether Dickson, Libba, Picken and Suckling will ever be 100% injury free at any time in the future.

The problem is if the club moves on even 2-3 of the players like Picken, Wood, Libba, Dickson, Adams and Morris can you imagine how that'd go down?

Mind you, none of those (bar Suckling eq 8th) were in our top 10 players in the Ching this year. The official B&F will probably reflect that too. So if even three of those players come good in 2019 we're already ahead of where we were this year.

I’m like a number of supporters on the Dahlhaus issue, I imagine - unhappy that he’s gone from a “heart and soul of the club” perspective, but not massively concerned that he’ll leave a significant hole in the list. He was elite at some very important things, but ordinary at others - particularly kicking.

I value good kicking skills pretty highly, and while I don’t think you can extrapolate much from one game I liked the approach against Richmond. We have a lot of players that can find the ball, and look likely to add at least one more in the draft, so we need players that can select the correct target (and then hit it), clear/pick/run their way through zones, and kick accurately for goal.

Dunkley is a poor kick but looks like a cheaper, taller version of Dahlhaus and carrying two of them in the middle was probably viewed as too much at the price/length Luke was after.

Who knows, we’re all speculating but I’d guess the club offered about 75-100k less than the supposed cats deal and one fewer year and he understandably turned it down for the better offer.

I wish him all the best and hope he plays good footy for the cats, but am confident we have cover for the role he played for the dogs.

Bittersweet feeling about this but 4x 550k vs the compo is pretty easy to justify for the club.

When I think of Dahlhaus, I think of turnovers. Both him creating them and him producing them. We are worse off defensively but better off offensively.

Would another player, playing his role provide more defensive turnovers?


The 2015/16 Dahlhaus was great but where he is now, I am happy to let him leave for the Cats.

Hurts to let a guy who leads the song after a grand final win go... him on the mic post grand final for those who were there was amazing to watch...

List wise the correct decision was made. In no way does it have to do with us not being able to pay him its choosing to pay someone else instead.

Footy going a bit mad but its the way forward for improvement and the team bevo wants to build to create his super team going forward.

How much would Jack Martin cost do people think? Would surely involve our first, no?

I’d assume so. He hasn’t really come on as I’d expected him too and has only shown his best in drips and drabs but I would guess if he wanted out that numerous clubs would be interested and it’d take a first rounder to prize him loose.

I do think if this team loses Adams, Dahlhaus, Wallis, Rough, and has the usual dose of bullshit injuries, we are in serious danger of another trip to the bottom 4. At which point the pressure will start to come on the coach.

People on here being nonchalant about not having the Dahlaus/Wallis signatures are forgetting that they were both in our bests at times this season in a 13th placed team and both usually pretty reliable from a fitness perspective, bar freak injuries.

Adams/roughead going west I can deal with. You're still talking about 3.5 reasonably consistent quality AFL footballers there and potentially replacing them with kids that aren't ready or inferior older guys.

Not trying to be a smart arse but we haven't finished in the bottom 4 since 2012. FWIW i think Wallis is more important to our side than Dahl and we still ned to sign him.

Now that we know Dahl is gone, I'm really hoping we trade the compensation pick. We can cover a bid for West with a Roughead compensation pick and the picks we have. And I really don't care if we go into deficit next year to cover Khamis, as it will most likely be in the 3rd round or later. I also think it's very likely that a bid for West comes before it. So to avoid wasting a good pick we should trade it before a bid for West eats it up. I'd love to hear some suggestions from people. A few off the top of my head (some might be overreaching):

I tried to leave out those that I thought would be too much, Cerra and Martin for example. I think Taranto, barring a crazy cap squeeze, would be in that category.

Possibly Will Setterfield though, with the injury + cap squeeze?

I read one article that said Cats are big winners bringing in midfield speed and goal kicking nous.....clearly haven't watched the same Dahl I've watched the last two years

I have slept on it but it is time for Brisdog to come out - I am into Billings. Our team craves a laces-out left footer in the forward half, a bloke who can kick more goals than behinds (potentially). And even though I currently feel sorry for St Kilda, I actually hate the aunts and will never forget that game in 15’ where they carried on like a bunch of aunts, Clay did his knee and Billings kicked 5. Get it done.
